Put the closed cell foam pad on TOP of your inflatable sleeping pad. You lose less heat through the pad that way. Also, change into dry clean socks at night after checking and drying your feet. Love my down booties.

I've been using a car reflectix in my pack for several years now, awesome budget sit pad or layer for under your sleep system.

@@DarrenYee My budget find of last season that is still going super strong is a dollar store collapsible bowl for 4$ - similar to the ones from SeatoSummit that cost around 20-40$ if you live near a Dollarama specifically that is where I got mine.

I totally agree Doug, I bought a lightweight microgrid fleece that is nice and warm. I know they have that awesome Trek100 down jacket. It has been difficult to find my size and they are out of stock online a lot of times with some of there clothing. Have you been to the store in SF? Any recommendations?

The kind of reviews of camping gear I really like. Some good solid honest advice and the way you described how the bag and quilt by themselves weren't good enough but together they were. I learned something today :) Oh and how noisy is the Nemo Tensor. Is it crackly and loud?
@DarrenYee
@DarrenYee 6 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. The nemo tensor is not loud at all compared to the thermarest Neo air. It is very comfortable with its baffled construction, a light crinkle sound when you move around.

@@DarrenYee Thanks for replying. I'm trying to choose between the Tensor and the Big Agnes Rapide SL Insulated. Are high R-value pads not good for use in summer because they're too hot?
@DarrenYee
@DarrenYee 6 ай бұрын
@@MrEvilWaspYes, They can be too warm in the summer time. Anything with an R-value of 4 or less is considered a 3 - Season pad. Warmth, comfort, weight, and price is what I was looking for. If you are near an REI I would take a look and test out a couple of pads in store. The REI Helix is a similar pad to the tensor, but a little bit heavier and goes on sale. I have not tried the BA Rapide SL, but it maybe the right pad for you.

@@DarrenYee Unfortunately I'm in the UK and we don't have REI stores here. I really appreciate your advice though. I'll go for a lower R value pad as you suggested.

My clothing gear is cheaper but works, also alittle heavier then I expected when weighing things out!! Haha underarmor works for me and carhartt outers are bomb proof but heavy 😂 I spent I decent amount on my camping stuff, since I like being warm/comfortable...

@DarrenYee mainly just my base layer, shell layer, gloves/hats are budget... rest of my gear is mid/high price stuff... only have 1 set of kit atm, and it's a 0F setup. Pushed it to the limits from -18f to 25f though! I've got a gear video up if you are interested to see as well

@DarrenYee I guess my outer shell layer arnt "budget" since coming in at $100 or more... however I will fight for them because of how durable they are, used as my shell gear at work in construction that they've survived!

Awesome. I need to get some booties. I don`t have a quilt, I double up on sleeping bad one insde another. I take it surves same purpose !?
@DarrenYee
@DarrenYee 4 ай бұрын
Thanks doubling up on any type of insulation will keep you warmer. Just make sure you have a warm enough sleeping pad because the ground will suck the heat right from under you.

Hi Darren - seriously great video. Do you recommended adding clothes inside bag for insulation if you don’t bring a quilt? I have a Nemo Disco 15 (25 deg comfort rating), Rapide pad and closed cell pad. Sleeping bag is wider for side sleepers. I got cold when temps went below 30 degrees.

Hi Dan, yes I do recommend layering up with clothes if you don't have a quilt. You could also add hand warmers, down booties, heat up water and place the bottle in your sleeping bag. As long as your sleeping pad and close cell pad insulates you enough from the cold ground. If not I would definitely look into a higher R value pad.

Hey Darren! Thanks for the great video! I was wondering if you could clarify what "toasty warm" means. Is it just warm relative to how cold it is, or is it as warm as you would like if you were sleeping in your climate controlled home?
@DarrenYee
@DarrenYee Жыл бұрын
Hi Augustine, Great question, I would say the Naturehike down booties kept my feet warm enough that I felt comfortable in freezing temperatures inside my sleeping bag. They were not too hot that it would make your feet overheat and the material was breathable so your feet don't get sweaty. If I did not have them, It would have taken longer for my feet to warm up and retain that warmth all night long. They were game changers in the fact that I didn't need to rub my feet together to stay warm and I was able to fall asleep faster. The only down side I see is having to take them on and off in the night if you need to step outside your tent to use the restroom.
