i had to do this like 4 months ago luckily i found a video aswell showing the electronic and manual way. note my battery was low and the issue was a line popped off so i wasnt getting gas. my point being is even if u have crank no start it will work the electronic way. most these points were brought up in the vid but if anyone rather quickly read or had a similar issue/experience.

Just to add to the mechanical part done this plenty of times and that lever is very hard to pull down not impossible but it may seem like it so if your transmission has never gone through this process probably the lever will be very hard now I found that the best way is a rachet strap and rachet it until it comes down and tie up your excess strap and car is ready for tow I got my 340i towed over 50miles like this because the tow driver refused to do rear tow on a highway where he would have to go the wrong way to hook up and then U turn on a 4 lane highway understandable

Yeah i was actually surprised how hard it was. That's why you need a hook for leverage.

your info on the newer cars (2020) trans lever being pulled down was dead on, one thing you might want to add is that on a 4wd X3 the front driveshaft blocks your access to the arm, yes you can see it but that's about it, I had to use some stainless fishing line to run thru the hole in the arm and come down to a piece of angle iron to wrap it around bridged from the trans pan to the floor, the reason I stated that I used stainless trolling wire was because there is little to no room to use anything else without rubbing on the driveshaft (less thank a 1/4in gap)

😅Wish I found your video yesterday. My 2016 340i could not be put in neutral due to drivetrain malfunction. Tow truck ended up pulling it up on the ramp using skates.

Yes. It was a oil filter housing gasket leak which triggered the malfunction putting the car into limp mode. It's been repaired and back to normal now.

The first option will not work if You’re stranded with no gas or for any other reason if your engine does not start because as soon as you step on the break and push the start button, the engine starts , so it will only work if you can start the engine otherwise you’ll have to do it mechanically

Yeah whenever you need to disconnect the driveshaft this is the easiest way to turn it and access all the bolts

Mine doesn’t have one. For whatever reason my ZF box hasn’t got one. I do a lot of track days and do all my own work on the car. This has helped me a lot! Can’t wait to try it out! 🙏

Hi Kern! I have a similar issue with my 328i GT, when I was at a stop sign I had sputtering and then my car died and immediately went into park, then that picture showed up "transmission not in park" it would not let me start it, then after the 5th time it did and I drove home. I went back out and drove it around the block and it did it again. Can you help me with this, in giving me information about what this might be? Thank you.

The physical key attached to the fob can be inserted in the driver's door handle to lock it

Man I wish I saw that video 3 weeks a go, IMPORTANT !!! your car is RWD looks like, if you have AWD this leveler will be behind a drive shaft (I do have 2020 340XI) and its a bitch to get to, basically I used zip tie pull down and zip tie to drive shaft.

Yes but it's spring loaded. If something isn't holding it down, it'll go back up and lock in park

Absolutely a Horrible, horrible design. Completely useless design if the engine has mechanical issues & you can't crank or run the engine to shift to neutral. you can't shift the electronic shifter unless the starter is cranking or the engine is actually running. What if it's got no oil or will cause mechanical damage turning the engine. I guarantee you when it breaks down, NO tow truck is going to crawl under & remove that huge belly pan & have the tool to use that mechanical lever... guaranteed. especially when it's blocking traffic, or in a busy parking lot or it's raining/ snowing or after an accident. even your demonstration in a shop, up on a hoist, you said it's difficult to shift it.... how much harder is it on the ground crawling under? plus there's a risk of it rolling off a jack once it pops out of gear... In snowy climates, you don't use the Emergency brake because if the owner doesn't use it regularly, they corrode & they will go on.. but often won't release.. so E brake isn't always an option... Very por design.. GM is doing this on several trucks & models... epic failure design.

Wait till the public finds out about the G20 and G30s for 2024/2025. No lever on the trans. Pull the wheel bolt on rear. Use bmw special tool. Pop the axle with tool then roll the car then reinstall wheel bolt and tool. Lol
