HI Justin. This is exactly this information I wanted to know. I am just know beginning to learn flint and steel fire making. You answered one of my questions in a clear and useful way. ....can't wait to practice the skills you have demonstrated. ATB, Ken

Thank you Ken. Be aware. Once you start flint and steel you will be addicted. It never gets old. If you need a striker let me know and I'll send you one my friend.

***** Thanks Justin. I'm smiling BIG. I mentioned to Sandy (Jacklore Knives) that I wanted to learn flint and steel and he custom made a striker, complete with Jacklore logo and is he is now collecting flint that he says is "proven" to make big sparks. I should be receiving them soon. Although I've seen several instructional videos; no one has shown how to keep the flint sharp. And you're the first person to show how to do it in a simple and calm way. You're video was very helpful. And much appreciated. I very much want to become addicted to flint and steel!

Very good explanation of knapping the edge. I’m pretty excited since I found Chert the first time I actually looked. Watched videos about it and realized it’s pretty common where I live lol! Now it’s time to turn an old file into a striker. I just subbed, going to check out your channel.👍

Great stuff Brother ! I keep a bopper as well as a pressure flaker handy .. The flaker takes off less material, so your flint lasts longer.. It's all still good and gets the job done..
@grierwolfe10 жыл бұрын
I still need to learn how to really use a pressure flaker. Knapping is something I'm behind on for sure.
@Tuxdaddy10 жыл бұрын
I'm still learning as well...lol I play with them but have yet to sit down and actually work towards making/shaping something from a piece of flint.. Keep up the great work Brother !!

Good instruction. I subscribed. Although it may seem axiomatic, people need to be very careful when doing any flint knapping. It can cut you in a heartbeat. I learned that the hard way. I suggest always wearing leather gloves.

Select or prepare a thinner piece of chert/flint in the first place, and then you can just use the side of your steel to pressure fracture off teeny flakes to refresh the edge of your chert. Less wasteful of material, faster, and leaves you with a sharper flint that makes better sparks. Many thanks.

I know this is an older vid of yours, but I have a question on the char punk. I made a tin of birch punk into what looks like charcoal (just followed the way I used to do cloth). Problem I'm having is I can't get it to catch a spark real well. Mine is made up of mostly (about 90%) big size chunks. Now the question: since I noticed yours was small type pieces (1\4" or so) is that size the best to use? Thanks for any help you can provide as this old dog likes to learn new trick but I take a bit longer. ol greybeard dino ; - ) >

That flint or chert is far softer than the flint I have, mine is dark grey and there is no way it would break like that, I can hit it with a hammer on the edge, that’s with the flint on a hard surface so it takes the whole force of the hit, it still won’t break!😟🤷♂️😬
