I've been playing along through MSQ with my friend who's new to FFXIV using New Game+. I let them kill all the mobs and we're hanging out in discord chatting about the story and I get to add a little context to characters and help answer questions that might not be too clear (no spoilers of course) and they always have a level capped player on hand if they ever get into trouble. Seems to work very well as I get to reexperience the story almost like a new player again and they get all kinds of extra details and help when needed. I've also been narrating the text that is not voiced over for them and they really seem to be appreciating the game a lot more.

I've convinced several friends to try the game at least once. That's all one can ask for. After that most of them said that the game simply is not to their liking, be it the art style, the story, the combat or whatever. I've told them that this or that will get better but in the end it's their decision if they want to force themselves to hang on. And whenever the decision was to leave the game behind I respected that decision and never tried to persuade them again.

Yes, while it is sad that I’m the only FFXIV in my group after convincing my friends to try they all still stopped playing before finishing ARR. I feel like if I had a 2+ player mount it would’ve helped them keep playing if I can just get them to all crystals so they can freely tp around. It is tedious running everywhere and not having a mount.

Sadly if your friend is on free trial, you cannot give them crafted gear or anything at all. I made my friend a set of gear for her beginning stuff and couldn’t trade it to her. Luckily that didn’t deter her and she’s planning on coming back to play more!

I understand why they do it, and they want you to learn your job inside and out, but a lot lot of nothing happens 1-40, maybe higher, and they lose so many players because of it. Further pruning of needless msq and making those earlier levels a little more exciting would be a good place for them to fix this game.

I've recently introduced my friend to the game. I have him stream in Discord and I follow him around in-game and hold his hand. If I didn't do this I'm positive he would have quit already from feeling overwhelmed. This way I can see and hear everything he does and experience the game together. Seemingly small things like getting a new weapon as a quest reward means a lot to him so I don't try to downplay that and rush him along, I make sure anything that feels meaningful to him is meaningful to me. It's his first MMO as well. Experience the game together, don't leave your newbie friends to fend for themselves in a confusing world. Obviously this depends on the person but I think it's generally true. In other games where I've convinced friends to try it I've either tried to rush them along or mostly let them fend for themselves even if I've answered questions and such and I don't think it's ever worked out. My friend was blown away by his first dungeon, first trial, first encounter with a beast tribe. I feel like a parent saying "See the world through a child's eyes" but it's a rather fitting analogy, though I'm not saying you should patronize your friends. Asking your friend to stream helps so much if you have two monitors so you can troubleshoot things for them immediately and make sure they never get stuck and frustrated. A few months ago I had the challenging but wonderful opportunity to introduce and guide from the start 7 people who were part of the same group of friends... all of them at the same time in the same voice call and all... just imagining having a full party of already known friends going through the game was enough to make it want to try. I explained and talked about the simplest of details to mid-level things one must know so they wouldn't feel overwhelmed by all the information and making it so they were completely sure of their chosen job so they were not changing from one to another while still going through MSQ.All of them started playing, creating their character and choosing their intial job at different time periods since one by one were getting enough desire to play the game so I had to introduce and brieffly explained them in the spot what each job does just make them sure of what job out of all of them they were going to play, one by one. Some of them were cutscene skippers, some were not. Some of them I helped them with un-synced instances and others while synced. I was giving them help tailored to each and everyo one them's needs to assure they were playing FFXIV their way and not one I forced upon them. I remember the sleepless nights I faced just because some of them wanted to continue playing at hecking 3AM and stopped playing at 7AM but since they didn't want to go alone they always asked of me. I essentialy experienced ARR and being completely new to FFXIV 7 times at the same time, literally and figuratively. I still remember how they all told me how they were amazed by the games and that they were indeed paying the full game once they reached Stormblood, everyone was on board and so was I with teaching them and guiding them propperly one by one, it was a sacrifice I was willing to make.At the end of the day only ONE of them made it to HeavensWard and even he stopped at lvl 56, some of them didn't even make it to lvl 35 and some stopped with the MSQ instances of MSQ roulette. When I sadly but optimistically asked them for reasons as to why most of them suddenly stopped with FFXIV they answered me with a "The game is slow and boring"-kind of response, even when I told them it gets faster and showed them how fast things can be in comparasion by screensharing them current savage content, some of them didn't even respond to me and cut all private communications with me while still hanging out in this very same group of friends, as for the guy who got to HeavensWard he gave me the "game slow, game boring"-answer with the plus of "I don't get the context as to why we're here in the game, it doesn't make sense to me, it feels like all of this is randomly generated"... while being a cutscene skipper, yeah, of course he had to be one of those. Present day and all of them have completely uninstalled FFXIV and they looked at me with this bad energy because I "made them waste precious time of their lifes in a game they ended up not even liking" and not even looking at it from my own perspective of basicaally wasting said energy but 7 more times. I never was rude to them, never forced them to play the game, never ridicule them for not knowing something or even not remembering something I explained to them before, nothing, I was as passive and helpful as I could ever be, I gave it my all and that's how things ended up. I know this is not the game's fault and that is most likely a "them problem" or even "me problem" but that was my experience and I can't stop thinking "wow, not even a 13 year old friendship can beat ARR... that's crazy". If xbox receives compatibility I will help my brother through the game and if not that's it for me no more inviting new people to this game. Not all sprouts are willing to give FFXIV that much of a chance, sometimes it is not meant to be. Sorry if there are any spelling errors or if some things aren't coherent, but when I was about to be done typing this, mr. depression himself striked me down just because I had to remember these events in order to type my story. If you think it's bad now you should have seen it a couple of years ago. I think they removed a lot of quests since then and from what I hear it's still a slog. The promise of HW being worth it is what kept me going.....and they were right. It was so worth it. I hope they added all those arbitrary fetch quests back with New Game + or maybe give us a New Game + PAIN! mode eventually.

If you buy a boost, obviously do it for a class you'd enjoy then imo after you hit max level and get a feel for the game, go back and attempt at getting either a zodiac (or zeta), or anima weapon. Hell, or both. The questlines take you around all of the old world zones and content, dungeons etc. Plus if you follow through you get a badass weapon :P

Greetings Zepla I love the game now since the pre Beta ARR.. Since this i invited 6 Friends to play with me but no one played longer than ~10 Days / lvl 20. I Totally give up to try that one of my Friends ever play FFXIV. So I recently started FF14 and my main takeaway has been like lvls 1 to 30 fantastic I loved that content, at the recommendation of my friends I've just been doing class quests, story quests, unlocks, and the journal? (Kill x of this monster in this zone) stuff to level. I was having a ton of fun, random groups were generally pretty chill I loved my Gladiator. The big disconnect for me has been this 30-50 area. I did the gladiator story and loved it, I knew it would turn into paladin and I was ready for some grand explanation of why I am a paladin, then someone in the class hall just goes "Yo Paladins are recruiting go over there." Story has started to pick up for paladin but I just felt like this is not the class fantasy I had. Also the quests in general seem to have gotten really bad. I'm just constantly walking back and forth between zones the occasional kill like x things but most is talk to this guy, then talk to this guy 5 feet away, now walk up this tower and talk to them. I feel like I could get the leveling experience by having my friend pull out his Regalia and I just chill in the passenger seat napping while he drives me around. (Before I get flamed I haven't! But honestly I don't feel like I'd be missing anything if I did) Its really just frustrating to hear from everyone "Ya... that's A Realm Reborn it gets better just keep playing" like the general boring aspect of this range has made it drag out like I'll play 30 minutes or so a day and just go... nah what else is there to do now.

That is the unfortunate thing about ARR, there are some quests in the middle that definitely feel like filler, but as someone who's recently reached Heavensward I can only echo the people saying it's worth the slog. It REALLY picks up in terms of pacing and story - much less 'go and talk to this person, fetch this thing, then come back here'. Also I've never played paladin but I've got a friend who does and from what I've heard, the story is... not great?? Again, I don't know, never done it myself, please don't kill me paladins - but I think there are jobs that have varying relevance to the MSQ, so it might be worth trying something different even if just for the story. Also you may have already tried these, but there are things like Palace of the Dead and PvP which are not immediately obvious to new players, but are fun and great for levelling.

I mean part of that is that Paladin has one of the worst if not the worst class questline, it's so bad that by the time we got to stormblood the questline went back to gladiators and we just pretend the paladin npc's aren't there. I say this as a paladin main who loves the gameplay but like most of the community hate the storyline.

New to the game, have a lvl 50 Pally and I've got a pretty good idea what I'm doing. I play with a controller because I have a high end PC hooked up to a really nice TV. I'm feeling a wee bit pushed away because I'm constantly reworking my button mapping, trying to be the best tank I can - this sometimes leads to mashing the wrong button. I'm a perfectionist so I have tried to learn the skills to use and when to use them (also bringing in many years of MMORPGs). When I make a mistake in a dungeon I understand the frustration from other players (only minimal thus far, really), but the pressure to produce in a game so many years old is wearing on me a bit. The mix of newbies and OG's in dungeons is a great idea, just remember that as a newbie mistakes will happen, and maybe I want to learn the dungeon instead of powering through it. That innate pressure I feel nudges me to play Pillars of Eternity 2 again instead of dealing with the possibility of another ass-hat in FF14.

The good tanks learn how much the healer can handle. I recently had one in the Temple of Qarn where he gradually pulled ever larger groups of mobs until I (Scholar) was spamming heals as fast as I could to keep him alive and burnt a hole in my mana bar even with lucid dream. After that he seemed to find my 'sweet spot.' Pulled enough to keep me busy but no enough to overwhelm me.

The point about crafting gear for your friend is an interesting one. It sucks being undergeared, but I can imagine how having a full set of gear appear out of no where would make your own accomplishments feel meaningless. Maybe asking your friend to buy some the base materials off the market board would be a good way to help them feel like they contributed.

I've come across this too with my friends. I know in other MMO's doing every.quest. is a normal way of levelling up, but they're so conditioned they don't realize it's not *quite* that way in XIV. (I have a friend who hit level 80 BEFORE getting to StormBlood. She doesn't want to level another class/job atm, and is working her way to Shadowbringers. All that wasted MSQ exp... T_T)

@@binya-dot-org Interestingly I started out like this when I started out. But then I started phasing it out when I realised that the rewards weren't really worth it. ARR wasn't as boring or empty as so many people told me. I didn't mind the fetch quest natural of it... though the run up to the Titan fight pushed my patience a bit. I also had four characters! That's been whittled down to two just because there's so much to do and I'm lvl 54 on that kinda interim where I beat Ultima Weapon, Gaius and Lahabrea but haven't actually started the Heavensward story yet. Things look like I'm going to end up fighting Leviathan soon.

I made my friends try out 14 got them all to 80. All 18 of them. It was a blast. We even do the first part of eden savage. Now they are all gone....... I see em all at work and they said to me “We waiting for that expansion” 😂😂😂 guess I’m alone till endwalker.

In addition, unsyncing msq required dungeons, especially in arr, will probably make them lose out on exp that they'll need to continue. A well meaning person did that for an alt of mine on brayflox (I was just asking if people wanted to join in general, but they unsynced it) and I had to do leveling roulettes to make up for it. It doesn't even save time and you'll do the dungeon synced eventually

A friend of mine started playing not too long ago. Letting them experience the dungeons and story on their own is the biggest hassle so far, my friend straight up refuses to read/watch anything lore related in-game and just wants to get to the end. It pains my soul seeing them potentially missing out on HW story completely because of it. :,(

At that point what is there to talk about? You two are playing two different games. If they can't accept that it's about the journey and not the destination, let the emptiness that follows reaching endgame be their teacher to be less impatient. But of course, chances could be that you two simply have very different values. In that case, conflicting interests with friends can be difficult to navigate, maybe ask for advice from someone you trust, or search online for answers.

As a new player that got knocked off the side by titan a couple of days ago I couldn’t help but smile at that part. I do feel the game progressively exposes players to mechanics in a way that feels rewarding and interesting, even if the fights themselves aren’t the hardest. That is entirely optional. It's likely that they recommend it if you are planning to farm items/mounts from them. Never use the Duty Finder to go into Extreme Trials. Use the Party Finder instead. You can even specify that you want to do them synced in the description. But be prepared if you go the synced route, the bosses are no longer pulling their punches!

After putting 400 hours in FFXIV and just finishing Stormblood, the idea of using of a level skip just makes no sense to me. I guess the MMO mentality is different and leveling up is seen as more as a means to an end, but for me, leveling up in FFXIV is such a huge part of the experience, I LOVE seeing that golden text across the screen, possibly unlocking a new skill or the next class quest. I guess for other MMOs, its about the destination, maxing out as fast as possible to use all your tools, but for me, FFXIV is definitely about the journey, much like other Final Fantasy games.

I got two friends to try it last year along with my friend that recruited me and the thing that turned off both is that you have so few skills and dungeons are extremely easy sub 50. They both actually liked the story, especially after level 40 and both made it just to the start of Heavensward and stopped there. TBH I agree with them, the base classes and early jobs especially have had to many skills removed from the ARR part. I would love it if they reworked the classes, so you get rotations earlier and then get potency increases to those skills on later levels, cause right now new players are expected to spend the first 50-100 hours doing story with very simplistic gameplay.

My friends got me into the game by sending me sceeenshots of their characters and adventures. They did this over the course of months until I finally started to express interest in it, and then finally they convinced me by promising I could make my own catboy 😂 But as I made my way through ARR I was struggling to get invested and was really confused with all the mechanics and seriously considered quitting 😔 But my friends kept offering me tips, advice, and kept dangling the promise of cool glams, mounts, items, and ofc the story itself. I perservered and I ended up falling in love with the game. Now I'm obsessed 😂😂

I recently conned two of my best friends and my boyfriend into playing with me and you betcha we ran titan and brayflox's totally blindsided because getting hit by titan's landslide and pulling too much in brayflox's is absolutely a rite of passage that much be experienced. Now they love the gave so I think I did something right! XD
