Unwanted head movement is a sure way to be inconsistent with your game. It will affect contact, direction and ultimately your control over the golf ball.
In this short video Chris explains exactly why the head may be moving and they demonstrates one of the best drills to help you get a sense of the correct movement needed to keep your head still in the backswing.

Definitely going to try this, I videoed my swing and was amazed at how much my head was moving back with my backswing; problem was even when I thought I was keeping my head steady, it was still moving.

Wow, one of the best videos that I've seen on this topic. I've been struggling with understanding how the body rotates around the spine. This video has helped me tremendously. Thanks!

This was fantastic advice and he was able to demonstrate it in a way that made sense to this hack. Took it to the course after 400-500 range balls and broke 80 for the first time in months.

Great instruction Chris, I really struggle with this. Without a steady head the bottom of the swing is SO inconsistent.

Thanks Chris. This really is an amazing drill. And so easy to rehearse. It gave me the feel of what the start of my backswing body turn should feel like. Previously I was too focused on coiling over my right hip in a way that caused me to move my upper body too far to the right.

Thanks Chris, do you have any tips and drills for keeping the head in the right position during the downswing to impact, as that seems to be the business end of the process, in which so many (including my wife) lift too soon and lose sight of the ball before actual impact? Hope the new lockdown doesn’t cause too much hassle for you up there again and that you need to get the net out of the shed!

in the first part of the b/swing (roughly till L arm parallel to ground) it is relatively easy to keep the head still / steady. It is from there to the top where the difficulty comes in. Any solutions to this, Chris

I recorded my swing and the only thing I saw that was completely wrong was my head moved by at least 6 inches forward in my downswing, so I feel like this is the key for me to play consistent golf

Dear Chris could you also make a teaching video that shows 2 drills that help high handicap & beginners to become better "finishing the forward swing (like park the car talk - when it comes to the club ending behind our head) and also explain very well both hand wrist move in the forward swing when we hit the ball - some video talking about starting to turn our hands (close the clubface) before impact - is that thought process right? Also it would be great to show us "slow-motion swing with wedge going 90-110 yards, due to us having problems understanding how close we should stand with wedge, how vertical should we swing and how to quite the lower half of body & how the hands move in forwards swing = so maybe 4 new golf video about those element. I still feel this is where I overthink and fail to do the golf swing right...! Hate hitting my PW 20-35 yards shorter than my friends! Thanks again - Jacob Thor

Thanks, Chris I will definitely try this drill. BUT, my issue is moving my head (toward the target) in the downswing, resulting in sliding, open clubface, etc. Do you have another drill for keeping the head still in the downswing side of the swing?

Chris… I have a lesson idea for you.. I played basketball at a high level for many years. It actually hurts my golf game. While you are urging people to be more athletic, I am too athletic. To keep my form and strike the ball well I have to move at about 50% speed. I have to fight the tendency to move fast. That causes a range of disconnections. Even at 50% I can still hit it a long way. Is 50% of full power normal?

Chris, I have a unique question for you. I happen to have very poor vision out of my left eye. I’m wondering if this makes it more challenging for me to rotate on the backswing. At the top of your backswing, can you see the ball with your right eye? I’m curious if there are any adjustments I need to make. Thanks.
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, unfortunately this may be affecting you a little. Most golfers have some head rotation off the ball so the lead eye tends to be the main one. You could ore set the head rotation, get the right eye adjusted, then swing back 👍

Arnold Palmer tells the story of his first golf lesson. Said the coach stood in front of him grabbed his head and hold it still while he hit like 100 golf balls.

@@lorendwilson not sure either but I do know that Nicklaus has said many times that that was exactly what his coach, Jack Grout, did do to stop his head from moving during his golf swing. Just goes to show that even the greats/arguably the greatest has to overcome the same things as the average Joe.

It feels like your head is still , but it isn’t , so many beginners lunge at the ball , head still forces rotation .

If you're really gude' you don't need to watch your ball fly. You're pretty much finished 3/4 thru the swing. Find something better to do while the ball's sailing to the target. I look at the cool divots that point exactly where I was aiming...don't know why the pros don't all do that. And blame your playing partners for not watching it if you can't find it :)

Me thinks he makes grave error just after the great stick to path demo. My feeling is one must track their hands back towards the ball off his right foot thus eliminating the fallacy of a straight back club path. In fact there’s nothing liner in a proper golf swing, it’s all an arch. The body with hands must trace path from setup with the hands moving back to over the second ball and then directly behind you tracing that path he demonstrated with stick: from the ball in front to the ball off his right foot.. this gets the club behind you thus when one begins the downswing, it’s from from the inside instead of around which promote outside in and over the top action. It’s more of a single plane approach which eliminates rerouting the club to the inside. Much easier for any golfer to achieve. Of course I could be wrong.
