I’d like to mention I really appreciate you making this content, there really isn’t enough content on these cuties and the information you provide is super appreciated for experienced owners and new owners alike, I had a tank going for around 2-3 years once, it is no longer “in service” as they had all died off when our house heater had broke for a day or two in winter, I was quite upset as I was very attached to them, but our house always has consistent temperature other than that mess up. I recently started a new tank about a month ago and they are thriving. The baby “incubating” tank idea was super smart and I may try that once they are a bit older. I’ve binged everything single one of your videos on TikTok and here, and I really enjoy the effort of your videos which are also super entertaining for casual watching. I really hope this hobby may grow a bit as these guys are very easy to care for typically and I feel can be great for all ages ( of course with help from parents of younger to avoid over feeding and such) I can’t wait to enjoy more of your future content! - a loyal viewer and sea monkey enthusiast

Hi! I recently started a sea monkey tank (I got the Sea Monkeys on Mars kit through Amazon) after watching some of your videos. At first, the little guys were thriving! I had probably at least 30 that reached adulthood and was super excited. I bought the USB powered air pump through your affiliate link and added that to the tank about the time I thought the sea monkeys were old enough to reproduce --I wanted plenty of circulation available so the babies had the best chance of getting nutrients when they were very small. For some reason, that's where everything started to go wrong. Most of my adults died within a matter of days. I now only have maybe 3 alive and one late hatchling from the original egg batch 4 weeks ago. My water never got cloudy, so I don't believe overfeeding was the issue (I was also super careful and followed the micro-feeding schedule you suggested). I used distilled water to start the tank. I kept the tank by a window that doesn't get direct sunlight and my house stays at 73 degrees. The outside temp also hasn't gone below 77 at night, so I don't think temp fluctuation from being near the window is the issue either. Do you have any thoughts at all on what I could have possibly done wrong? My one thought is that maybe the airline tubing contaminated the water somehow? I rinsed the airstone off with distilled water before introducing it to the tank, but I don't remember doing the tubing itself. I did notice these little white specs in the water, like fuzzy cotton balls, but the info online is conflicting. Some people say that's bacteria and it's harmful. Others say it's likely just sea monkey molts that have jumbled together. I've ordered a new kit as well as a new set of the water purifier, eggs, and food to restart the problem tank. Any advice at all would be appreciated so I don't repeat the same mistake.
@pico-cosmos2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jessica :) first off - those fuzzy white balls are likely discarded sea-monkey exoskeletons. All of my tanks have a bunch of them sitting at the bottom of the tank, they’re harmless and will eventually break down. As for what has gone wrong with your tank it’s hard to say as it sounds like you’re doing everything right. Does your air line have a control valve so the pressure isn’t too strong? It could be contamination from the airline but that’s unlikely, it’s not an issue I’ve ever experienced personally. Is there green algae growing in the tank?
@jessicamcminn-cotton15372 жыл бұрын
@@pico-cosmos Thanks for the quick response! Yes, I do have a control valve so that the airline is just gently bubbling through the airstone. Also, I never got a lot of algae growth, although there is some in the bottom of the tank. I know it's harder to underfeed them than overfeed them...but I'm questioning everything I did now. Perhaps since there were so many I was a bit too conservative with the food once they reached adulthood. I am thinking of getting one of the cheaper grow lights off Amazon just in case. I so badly want this second batch to make it!
@pico-cosmos2 жыл бұрын
@@jessicamcminn-cotton1537 a grow light is a good idea, but a regular lamp will work well too if you have one 👌 I’d recommend having one pointed at the tank for around 16hrs a day. Underfeeding is unlikely but it is possible. It can take a bit of practice until you get a feel for the right amount

Thanks very much for making this video. Good to see NZ represented too! We recently hatched ours but most died aside from one, probably due to overfeeding. A week later we had dozens of new hatchlings which initially did well a for a week days but always died overnight and only after reaching the size of a sandfly. They would become lethargic and hang around at the bottom of the tank moving weakly. The large surviving adult was always OK. Took your advice on temperature (using a 24W CFL bulb for now) and made a nursery by splitting the tank water and transferring all the young. Next morning, all are still alive!

@pico-cosmos2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the nursery is a great 'low-tech' way of rearing the babies to adulthood, so definitely give it a shot. I'm sure your full spectrum grow light lights will work just fine :) The reason that plants and micro-algae appear green to us because they reflect (throw away) green light and absorb the other wavelengths of light which they use for food. So it's not really necessary to give them green light, but there's no harm in doing so. Purple grow lights are more efficient but I think other factors such as light intensity are more important than the colour

You'd need to use a proper aquarium salt to get the salinity / mineral balance right and even then it can be a little tricky. I'd suggest just keeping them in their Sea-Monkey tank for now. I'm currently working on a video about how to make a DIY brine shrimp tank that should answer a lot of your questions : )

I was given some Sea Monkeys when I was maybe seven years old, way back in the early 1970s. I followed the instructions and they hatched. Then I was terribly disappointed by the fact that they looked nothing like the cartoon ads showed them to be. I was fully expecting little humanoid creatures that had picnics and sat around the living room like they did in the comic book ads. It was my first lesson in deceptive advertising. I fared much better with my ant colony. The little plastic container had a lower section for the sand/soil, and an upper chamber for collecting the ants and feeding them. You’d soak a cotton ball in a sugar solution and place it in the (detached) upper chamber. You’d then set it out with its hatch open next to an ant bed. Once you had a bunch of ants feeding from the cotton ball, you’d take it in and attach it to the bottom part. All you needed to do after that was put fresh sugary cotton balls inside the top part a few times a week. I’d sit and watch those ants in their tunnels for hours! Way more fun than Sea Monkeys.

Great video. I always wondered whether they'd do better in a tank with continuous water flow considering they always swim against a current when there is one 🙂
@pico-cosmos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah the fact that they swim against the current is the basis for how the Sea Monkey Speedway racetrack works. I'm not sure if the water circulation itself is good for them, other than the way it helps to keep food suspended in the water column like I mentioned in the video :)

This is such a good video with awesome advice, I assume i already know the answer, but would you recommend an air stone in the ‘nursery’ tank as well? Thanks!
@pico-cosmos2 жыл бұрын
Hey Taryn! That's a good question. I think ideally yes, it probably is good to have the air stone bubbling away in the nursery. It will help to keep food suspended in the water where it's easy for the babies to eat it. That being said, they don't have to compete with the adults for food in the nursery, so it's not essential as they'll still get plenty of food anyway.

Hi there. Great advice video thank you. I've gone crazy and have 3 tanks. My only problem is "how to remove the white scum from the top surface". I've read, lay a sheet of kitchen towel, on the top/surface and all the scum will disappear. Do you think this is advisable? I thought kitchen towel was "bleached paper", not a good idea to use in the tank, I would think. Do you have any other advice please. Also, does my tank have scum because I'm over feeding? @@pico-cosmos its so unlucky that they don’t sell them at where I live. I have to buy them online from other countries, which isn’t too expensive comparing to their official price in the country where they sell them but for a student living in developing country like me it is definitely too high, I guess I just buy some shrimp eggs then, but the novelty of the sea monkey and their brand is definitely what the toy is more about. Next time I go abroad I might just buy some as a souvenir.🥹🥹

thanks so much. I hatch live baby brine shrimp to feed my fish and wanted to grow them up a little bigger for better nutrition. All i can find in the fish keeping videos is how the hatch the babies, but nothing after that! So i thought, hey why not search for "sea monkey". I absolutely bet you can increase your audience if you do some care guides with larger set ups for growing larger numbers. Most serious fish keepers feed live brine shrimp and we all want to know how to keep them! You have the best info i've been able to find so far. Some specific questions I have are, Are there any kind of moss or plant that can survive in the salt water? Would they benefit from catappa or Indian almond leaves? what about adding a mineral stone? Right now I have a 1 gallon tank with a small sponge filter on very low. Is that a good idea? I also added some bio-media to help with algae and beneficial bacteria growth. Do you think that's a good idea? Also, I'm using 8 tablespoons salt per gallon of water. I imagine you use liters....but can you tell me the exact salt to water ratio you use? like, how much per liter? Thank you in advance. 😄
@pico-cosmos2 жыл бұрын
Hey Carrie :) Thanks for the comment and the suggestion. I am working on a brine shrimp grow-out guide :) that video should be out in a few weeks. Brine Shrimp can thrive in a wide salinity range (anywhere from 10-80ppt), so perhaps you could find a plant that can survive in their lower salinity range, but as a general rule brine shrimp and plants aren't compatible. In fact the best thing you can do for them is culture green microalgae (aka phytoplankton, cyanobacteria, green water) to feed to them. I've not used a sponge filter with brine shrimp before because I've always assumed it would suck the babies up. Brine shrimp can tolerate VERY high nirate/ammonia levels though, so keeping their water super clean isn't particularly important. I'm not sure about adding in indian almond leaves, you could always give it a try and see how it goes. I usually add in some crushed up egg shells to provide calcium for them and it appears to be sufficient :) I personally use a salinity of around 25ppt (25 grams of salt per litre of water) and it works well, though as I mentioned earlier the exact amount isn't super important. I'd recommend aiming somewhere around 25ppt 👌
@carrielange2692 Жыл бұрын
@@pico-cosmos I've followed your guide, got my salinity to match yours, got the heater you advised and now I've had a successful colony for about 6 weeks. they grew from newly hatched BBS up to adult, that had their own babies, and those babies have become adults and are mating! It's the first time I've had such success and I'm so excited! I think the most important change I made was adding the heater. I got the little mini usb heater you advised and I have them in a 1 and 1/2 gallon glass jar. I have kept using the mini-sponge filter too, and i just keep the bubbles down to a gentle rate. I added a bunch of bio-balls in there and the green algae is starting to grow on the media now. I've been doing about a 10% water change every week. I've also got another 1 gallon jar set up separately that I'm trying to grow green water in, per your video. In the mean time, I've been feeding them a mix of spirulina powder, crushed fish flakes, and crushed active yeast. It's crazy how fast they grow, and they are so fun to watch. I know the real test is if they last a few more months, but I just wanted to tell you about my tentative success and thank you. 🥰

@pico-cosmos2 жыл бұрын
@@alicemcshee3010 Hey Alice, tbh I've never used Plasma iii before, but from my understanding it's just more salt to increase the salinity of your tank. This can help to ward off illnesses such as the dreaded 'black spot disease' - I personally don't think it's important as I've had no trouble sustaining my colonies without it :)
