Can you use bulky yarn for this pattern or will the stars not show. If so how many yds would you need?

You probably could, although you'd need to adjust your needle size. To figure out which needle to use and whether the stars will show up, it's best to make a swatch with your intended yarn to ensure you like the look of the fabric. Going up a needle size and changing to a bulky will affect how much yarn you'll need, and unfortunately, there's no way for me to estimate that for you because of all of the variables. Sorry about that.
