How to Knit a Blanket for Complete Beginners | Full Tutorial + Written Instructions | Arctic Throw

Learn to hand knit a blanket in this beginner friendly tutorial.The Arctic Throw is a blanket that was designed with beginners in mind. Essential knitting techniques that are included:
- cast on (co)
- knit stitch (k)
- purl stitch (p)
- bind off (bo)
- how to add a new skein of yarn
- how to weave in the ends
As this is a question I get asked a lot, the # of cast on stitches is 106 for the blanket I made in the video. For the smaller size, cast on 74 stitches. Hope this helps!

I found the seed stitch a little hard for me as a beginner and after a couple attempts decided to pull it out and start over just doing the knit stitch for this first blanket. I dont get why you did a cast on like that but i think i might. is it because drawing out enough yarn to do a regular long tail cast on is hard to measure out with such a large project so you need to make sure you have enough yarn to cast on? Because when your done casting on wouldnt both tails still be the same length because they came from each end of the scane, but then you cut off the remaining yarn? Dont you want that yarn to continue knitting? And how are you going to attatch a new scane of yarn when you run out how is there gonna be a tail that comes to a end if you went from both sides of the scane Wouldnt that just like come to the very middle of the scane? Im just really confused, love the tutorial and how patient you are but im just confused and hoping you can answer 😊😂🙏

If I may, try the channel Purl Together. I’ve been knitting for almost four years and struggled and failed making socks for so long. The nervous knitter is also a good one to teach you how. I have found that I have to watch multiple people in order to get the hang of it. To really understand the form. Also, try doing socks in worsted weight first before you venture into sock weight yarn. It makes a world of difference when trying to learn ❤️❤️❤️

Beautiful blanket. What a nice yarn that is. I know the both the knit and the cable cast on are supposed to be slower than the way you cast on, but you can’t convince me of it. My mother used the cast on method you used but not double stranded. I picked up the knit cast on because it just made more sense and then cable cast on later, and my mother didn’t seem able to cast on any faster than I could. Both of the knit kinds of cast on are easy to learn. I image a two strand cast on is the way to cast on if you must use this method. Also, my mother taught me to knit with the yarn in the right hand and without taking my hand off of the needle and so it ends up being just as quick as having the yarn in the left hand (perhaps quicker). Well, I have to do a slight lift of the hand because the first digit of my finger wasn’t as long as my mother’s - the first digit is used to guide the yarn around. It’s very efficient. The left hand yarn feed always looks like it requires so much effort from both hands.

I very new to knitting and your video was super helpful! I just have a question, so you have your working yarn and then you have a second yarn for the first loop from casting. What will I do with that? Will I eventually work that in? I’m not done w my blanket yet but it’s confusing the heck out of me. Very good tutorial. However I've always been taught to join a new ball of yarn at the end of a row. You join in in the same way and then you sew them down the edge. This way you don't have a thick area with is more noticeable in thinner yarns and in patterns that have a smoother surface eg as stocking stitch carrigan or sweater. I have been knitting for more than 65 years. But keep going as you are. You're doing a great job! By the way, no criticism intended. From Bernadette

thank you for this easy to follow tutorial, I am left handed and I find it a little difficult to follow right handed instructors, your tutorial will make knitting much easier for me. I have crocheted for a couple of years now - teaching myself through videos. I learned as a child to knit, from my mom or grandmother, but my cast on is different, the long tail method seems a bit confusing to me, but your tutorial slowed it down to a nice level of understanding. I am curious though, I see so many beautiful items that are knitted, are they all just variations of two stitches ? Knit and Pearl ? Crochet has so many stitches, there are the basics, but I find it hard to believe you can complete any knitted project if you know only two stitches.

That's wonderful, I'm happy to hear that it is helpful for you! It took me several tries to understand the long tail cast on when I was learning. While I'm obviously not left handed, I can see how that can be difficult learning from others. I have had another left handed person contact me and I suggested the channel B Hooked Crochet and Knitting. She has both left and right handed tutorials, so if you want additional resources and haven't come across her channel yet, you might check it out. That is exactly how I learned both crochet and knitting, watching other people via KZbin. One of the reasons I created this channel actually. I want beginners to feel confident that they can jump in and start making those projects they always wanted to. That is the beauty of knitting. Everything is essentially a knit and purl. There are other techniques like twisting stitches, slipping stitches, yarning over, and increasing and decreasing, etc. But these are added to rows as you knit and purl normally, which is how you can obtain texture and designs in the fabric. I hope that makes sense...

Thanks for all your help. How can you fix a mistake when suddenly you are off the pattern of knit / purl. I tried to unravel and fit but it is hard to know which way the loops go. Is there an easier way ?

You could. However, I don't like the feel of the knot, which can be really noticeable with a thicker yarn like what is used in this video. But definitely try and see if you like it. Another way to add a new yarn is to pick up the end tail of the new skein and start knitting. Just leave enough yarn at the end to weave in. I use this method a lot too since it's fast and easy.

I only ever knitted once - a very long, very simple scarf many years ago. Your explanations seem easy to follow so I am saving this to maybe try this winter. I like the look of this blanket but prefer less bulky yarn if that's possible to use. Thanks for explaining how the circular needles work. I always wondered about that. Oh I really hope that you do give this a try! You could use less bulky yarn, but go down to a needle size that corresponds to the yarn you use. And keep in mind that if you do use a different weight yarn, but follow the written instructions as is, your blanket won't be the same size as what is stated in the pattern (smaller if you use thinner yarn). Easy way to fix that is to cast on more stitches. Hope that's helpful. I wish you the best of luck if you do choose to knit this blanket! And let me know if you have any questions down the road.

i chose this project as my introduction to knitting and my pea brain just couldn't do the alternating stitches, but after knitting an interpretation of this with only the knit stitch, powering through using straight needles, and lots of hiccups, i think i can finally come back and make this one the way it's supposed to be lol

Hello, thank you for your lovely video! However, I currently do not have access to needles that are longer than 36". The longest needles I have at the moment are 32" long, do you think it would be okay to use them if I'm planning on knitting a lapghan?

You know, I think you'd be fine with the needles you have. You just need all of your cast on stitches to fit on them!

Yes! So you want a thick yarn for this blanket. The Craft Yarn Council has a numbering system for yarn weights in the US. According to that, you need a #6 or super bulky yarn. In the UK, it's called super chunky. Also, yarns generally give a recommended needle size on the label. Look for a yarn that includes 9.00mm needles. Hope that's helpful! Congrats on finishing your blanket! So exciting! And yes, this blanket can be washed. I’d follow the suggestions on the yarn label if they provide that info. I throw mine in the washing machine and dryer, so if you used the yarn in the pattern, you’re good. Beware the first couple washes will leave fibers in your machine, but this should go down with more washes.

When you start the first knit stitch, are you using only 1 of the yarns from the skein? Because we started with both ends of the yarn to CO. Do you just pick 1? What do you do with the other?

Yes you only use 1 strand of yarn on the rest of the blanket after the cast on. You choose which strand you want to knit with and use that. The other strand, cut it but leave about 6-8 inches to weave in. You don't want to cut it at the stitch because your blanket will unravel.

Hi! Happy to hear you are trying out this pattern! When you get to the end of the cast on, you will have 2 yarn strands, as you mentioned. You choose one of them and cut it. Then you continue knitting the next row with only one strand. At the end you weave in the end you cut. Hope that makes sense! Sorry for any confusion by the video.

Question: Love love love this pattern! I bought the same wool in a different colour (Harvest) and I’m knitting the full throw. However, I’m noticing now, one skein in, that my stitches are a bit tighter than yours. I can still knit through them fine but it’s definitely not as loose as yours in the video. Do you think this should make a huge impact on the size? I’m wondering if I should turn back now and restart while I’m ahead 🥲

Now I don't know if you already continued and finished the blanket but I would say that if I catch a mistake or something that does not feel completely right I always frog it and redo it, that gives me more practice with techniques and sometimes I get new ideas to try instead of the original thought. I would say that you will regret it more when finished and something is off/wrong than regret that you spent a few more minutes/hours/days than needed😊

As a brand new knitter, I found trying to alternate between the different styles a little confusing so I just did my blanket in the basic knit, but all your other instructions so were so helpful and I'm really happy with my blanket!

36" is what I used for that blanket size. It will hold all of your stitches and you can knit comfortably.
