I got a whim to learn to knit this week and found your post. You are an AWESOME teacher for a beginner! I found the seed stitch a little hard for me as a beginner and after a couple attempts decided to pull it out and start over just doing the knit stitch for this first blanket. I'm getting better at not pulling it too tight and my blanket is looking great. I'm now 2 skeins in and really enjoying knitting. Thank you so much!! Beautiful blanket. What a nice yarn that is. I know the both the knit and the cable cast on are supposed to be slower than the way you cast on, but you can’t convince me of it. My mother used the cast on method you used but not double stranded. I picked up the knit cast on because it just made more sense and then cable cast on later, and my mother didn’t seem able to cast on any faster than I could. Both of the knit kinds of cast on are easy to learn. I image a two strand cast on is the way to cast on if you must use this method. Also, my mother taught me to knit with the yarn in the right hand and without taking my hand off of the needle and so it ends up being just as quick as having the yarn in the left hand (perhaps quicker). Well, I have to do a slight lift of the hand because the first digit of my finger wasn’t as long as my mother’s - the first digit is used to guide the yarn around. It’s very efficient. The left hand yarn feed always looks like it requires so much effort from both hands.

I dont get why you did a cast on like that but i think i might. is it because drawing out enough yarn to do a regular long tail cast on is hard to measure out with such a large project so you need to make sure you have enough yarn to cast on? Because when your done casting on wouldnt both tails still be the same length because they came from each end of the scane, but then you cut off the remaining yarn? Dont you want that yarn to continue knitting? And how are you going to attatch a new scane of yarn when you run out how is there gonna be a tail that comes to a end if you went from both sides of the scane Wouldnt that just like come to the very middle of the scane? Im just really confused, love the tutorial and how patient you are but im just confused and hoping you can answer 😊😂🙏

Very good tutorial. However I've always been taught to join a new ball of yarn at the end of a row. You join in in the same way and then you sew them down the edge. This way you don't have a thick area with is more noticeable in thinner yarns and in patterns that have a smoother surface eg as stocking stitch carrigan or sweater. I have been knitting for more than 65 years. But keep going as you are. You're doing a great job! By the way, no criticism intended. From Bernadette

If I may, try the channel Purl Together. I’ve been knitting for almost four years and struggled and failed making socks for so long. The nervous knitter is also a good one to teach you how. I have found that I have to watch multiple people in order to get the hang of it. To really understand the form. Also, try doing socks in worsted weight first before you venture into sock weight yarn. It makes a world of difference when trying to learn ❤️❤️❤️

I only ever knitted once - a very long, very simple scarf many years ago. Your explanations seem easy to follow so I am saving this to maybe try this winter. I like the look of this blanket but prefer less bulky yarn if that's possible to use. Thanks for explaining how the circular needles work. I always wondered about that. Oh I really hope that you do give this a try! You could use less bulky yarn, but go down to a needle size that corresponds to the yarn you use. And keep in mind that if you do use a different weight yarn, but follow the written instructions as is, your blanket won't be the same size as what is stated in the pattern (smaller if you use thinner yarn). Easy way to fix that is to cast on more stitches. Hope that's helpful. I wish you the best of luck if you do choose to knit this blanket! And let me know if you have any questions down the road.

Question: If I am knitting with long needles instead of circular ones, should i transfer the stitches I have cast on onto the empty needle to cut one of the slip knot threads and then transfer it back to the original needle? Also, do you have a video clip of how to cut one of the skeins' yarns at the end of casting on the stitches to continue with only one skein at a time? 😊

Hi! Thanks for the question. If you’re using straight needles to cast on this way, no you don’t have to transfer stitches and undo the slip knot. You can start knitting on your first row and when you get to the end, don’t knit into the slip knot (it’ll look like a stitch). Instead, pull it off your needle as I show in the video. Congrats on finishing your blanket! So exciting! And yes, this blanket can be washed. I’d follow the suggestions on the yarn label if they provide that info. I throw mine in the washing machine and dryer, so if you used the yarn in the pattern, you’re good. Beware the first couple washes will leave fibers in your machine, but this should go down with more washes.

For the circular needles to make the throw at 50”, does the length of the cable needles matter? Can I manage this with 40” cables or should I get the 60” circular cables? Great video, easy to follow.

Good question! Yes, you can definitely manage the stitches with a 40” cable. The size I used was 36”, measured from tip of needle to tip of needle.

The blanket I made turned out to be about 58 inches long by about 32 inches wide with almost 10 skeins of Wool Ease wheat color yarn. So, basically, it turned out to be a lapghan. Also, I accidentally knit the garter stitch (k1, p1) throughout the entire blanket instead of creating the seed stitch (k1, p1, then p1, k1 on the opposite side) but one of my grown up kids thinks it’s really cool!

Great tutorial! Thank you for sharing!! This is my first time knitting and now I am trying to knit a blanket with your pattern. So far so good! But I got a question for you... howcome my stiches are all curl up... the width of my blanket is pretty long, is it possible it is too long? seems like it is over 36"? thinking if I made some mistakes along the way to cause it... maybe I should start all over again... would love to have your input! thanks!

I'm a bit confused as to why some people hold the yarn in the left hand? I find it confusing as I've always knitted with the yarn held in my right hand. Are you left handed or is it just a different way to hold the yarn?

Hi! This is a really good question, thanks for asking. When you hold the yarn in your left hand, it's the continental knitting style. For me, I learned to crochet before knitting. Since I'm right handed, I hold the hook in my right hand and the yarn in my left hand for tension when I crochet. Thus, when I knit it's natural for me to hold the yarn in my left hand. I feel awkward otherwise :) It's not the same for everyone, but that's one of the perks of knitting, there is no wrong way to do it. But I can see how it can be confusing. I hope this helped!

I really enjoyed this video and thought you explained it very well! I have never knitted before but will try this technique to make a throw for my new house. I wonder whether you could do a video on how to add a new skein that's a different colour to make a stripe effect and how/when you should add it so the old colour doesn't run into the new one? Does that make sense? I want to make a black and white striped blanket :)

How do you keep the yarn from twisting around? So that the "straight line" of the cast on stitches are at the bottom and not all twisted around? And how do you get the stitches close together? When I do the open thumb and knit through, each knit has like half an inch of space in between them.

I saw this and immediately wanted to do this but I'm more of a crochet girl than a knitter. Do stitches differ from crochet to knitting and is it possible to do this stitch with a crochet hook?

Knitting stitches differ from crochet stitches. Also you definitely need knitting needles not a crochet hook! It is easy to learn the simple beginner stitches and it’s worth it. 😊

I used to consider myself as exclusively crochet. But once you expand into knitting, you'll learn the types of fabric you get are totally different. And this is because the stitch structure is different. So yes, the stitches do differ. In knitting you have knit and purl stitches and everything else is a combination of the 2. In crochet you have slip stitch, SC, hdc, DC, and tr. Those can all be combined to make different patterns too. You can easily see the difference if you Google knit vs crochet fabric or if you have a knit sweater from the store, you can compare to your crochet pieces. And to answer your 2nd question, to my knowledge, there is not a crochet stitch pattern that looks identical to the one used in this knit pattern. There is however a crochet "seed stitch". This knit blanket uses the knit seed stitch, but like I said it's not identical to the crochet version. You might like to check it out though :)

Question: Love love love this pattern! I bought the same wool in a different colour (Harvest) and I’m knitting the full throw. However, I’m noticing now, one skein in, that my stitches are a bit tighter than yours. I can still knit through them fine but it’s definitely not as loose as yours in the video. Do you think this should make a huge impact on the size? I’m wondering if I should turn back now and restart while I’m ahead 🥲

Now I don't know if you already continued and finished the blanket but I would say that if I catch a mistake or something that does not feel completely right I always frog it and redo it, that gives me more practice with techniques and sometimes I get new ideas to try instead of the original thought. I would say that you will regret it more when finished and something is off/wrong than regret that you spent a few more minutes/hours/days than needed😊

She replied like this: "Hi! I would love to help you out. I'm sorry that portion of the video has left you confused, totally my fault. When you get to the end of the cast on (all of your stitches are on the needle), you still have 2 strands of yarn. You only need one strand to knit with, so cut one of the strands, doesn't matter which one, just cut one and leave a tail 6-8 inches to weave in at the end. Then you will be left with 1 strand and that is the one to knit with. So sorry I did not make that so clear in the video. I added a little box where I tried explaining that, but it's easy to miss. I hope that clears it up for you. And let me know if you have any other questions!" And I just noticed this after spending 5h more to do this ^^ This is my very first time try and this yarn is totally wasted! 🙈 But thank her still for awesome video with easy instruction!

I very new to knitting and your video was super helpful! I just have a question, so you have your working yarn and then you have a second yarn for the first loop from casting. What will I do with that? Will I eventually work that in? I’m not done w my blanket yet but it’s confusing the heck out of me. Sometimes I’ll accidentally use it, or it’ll get tangled up in the rest of my yarn. Please help, thank you! ❤

Thanks for all your help. How can you fix a mistake when suddenly you are off the pattern of knit / purl. I tried to unravel and fit but it is hard to know which way the loops go. Is there an easier way ?

Can I use a 36 in circular knitting needle for the 52x60 blanket? Or do I have to buy bigger needles?

36" is what I used for that blanket size. It will hold all of your stitches and you can knit comfortably.
