I'm old enough that I'm planning on making a video on vintage knitting - because those are the sorts of patterns I grew up with! 😄 (I just need to get some sort of a stand or holder for the 'phone-camera, so that I can film from the knitter's viewpoint.) I've been watching Stephen's videos (and some other knitting videos) because I decided it's time I levelled up my knitting game a bit. If you're still looking at knitting in more traditional ways, watch Hazel Tindall's video "Basics and Belts" which covers a lot of basics, as well as the use of a knitting belt. But Hazel is also partly to blame for me poking my nose out of my comfort zone! When she does colour work, she holds one yarn in each hand. (There are some people who do colour work with both yarns held in the right hand for English style knitting but I looked at that and thought that it would get a bit messy if I did it.) So I've been working on my Continental knitting skills. That said, I still use old fashioned needles that come in pairs or sets of 4 (or 5 these days! that was a bit of a surprise for me). So, the TL:DR version is: get back into knitting and do the sort of knitting you enjoy and that you feel comfortable with.

Welts, who would've thought? I like the style it can add to an item and you make it look easy. Thanks for the tip. 💯 bataad, here I come.

Brilliant!! I would have used a 'help needle' anyway, thanks for showing it. I had actually practiced doing the Welt but didn't know wha it was called. Stephen, you are an Excellent teacher!! we look forward to your tutorials. If you were inclined to sit in front of a fireplace with a camera over your shoulder.... :) What a nice "screensaver" that would be. I'd LOVE to see you knit for a half hour or so, no talking required, just your elegant fingers and 2 needles flying!! thanks again for the outstanding tutorial.

Great video. If I hadn't already known the technique, I'd have been totally able to do it at the end of the video. A video that teaches so clearly is a rare thing, like a precious gem. What you didn't say, however, is that welts can be used at the beginning of a garment, as a hem, instead of a band if rubbing. This works best on a garment that you don't want to draw in at the hem, like a long cardigan. Or at least, that's the way I did it on a cardigan I made for a great niece.
@avlawerd593 жыл бұрын
I wonder about hem use too.

I think one of these days when I work up the courage to knit a sweater I am going to have to do one of yours so I will finally have an "ugly" Christmas sweater. I say that as the highest complement btw since I hate actual ugly Christmas sweaters and think the fun and unusual ones are the best. Many of your more experimental designs are something I would enjoy making but not often have opportunity to wear and they would be perfect for this.
