WHO WE ARE
In 2015 we quit our lives in the city to buy bare land in the country and build a timber frame home from scratch with our bare hands, debt-free, with no prior experience. It’s been a wild ride of ups, downs, highs, lows, rain and rainbows, but we haven’t lost sight of our goals and have gotten further in three years than we thought we’d get in ten. Join us as we build our house, develop our rural property, practice traditional skills such as gardening and food preservation and go to even greater heights (literally) of exploring the world through aviation as a new private pilot!

One of the reasons well drillers chlorinate Wells is because their drilling rigs are dirty and often introduce bugs into the well and not because these bugs are present in the well already. The whole idea is to kill off these bugs as soon as you can after the well is drilled. Other wise they can propagate and become a permanent issue.

This is from and old man in south Texas who's water comes from the Rio Grande. Talk about pollutants, we have them. I would recommend you talk to several water treatment companies and get their references and check them out before making any decisions. I tried several special water treatment systems that didn't start to do the job. Expensive lessons!!!. I finally visited with several locals and plumbers and ended up buying a low cost water softener under $600. from a local Home Supply store and use it just for my home. Then I went on line and purchased a reverse osmosis system for my ice maker and drinking water. The showers are great! The water tests better than most bottled water, tastes better also, and very little maintenance. I use salt for my softener but there are substitutes for salt. Then I change the filters once a year and the membrane only when needed maybe 3-5 years. No hard water to damage my hot water tank and less soap and whatever for the laundry and a wife that is happy with the water Tom

We use a whole house water filtration system for our well from Whirlpool. I think we paid $260 at Lowes and the plumber installed it for $150. One of the many things it does is take most of the iron smell and taste out of the water. They don't say that it does it but it does. And the beauty of it is that it is cheap and backflushes itself on a timer that you can set to your needs. Once a week and it is done. Wishing you luck with figuring out what works best for your family.

I am going to say how to collect your colli sample not how or why treat the well water. Hopefully the testing lab told you how to take the sample and it is this way: 1. turn the water on and run to clear. 2. Take the sample bottle and remove the top without touching the inside of the bottle or lid. Fill the bottle with water from the running water without touching anything with the bottle but the running water. 3. Put the top back on the bottle without touching the water. 4. Fill out the label if you have not already done so. 5. Take the sample bottle to the lab as directed as soon as possible after collecting the sample. To keep from contaminating the sample is why it is extremely necessary to not touch the inside of the bottle or sample water in the bottle.. I have done this several times so know the procedure.

A water softener and an iron filter, and a UV light to stave off any future influx of bacteria, and you’re golden. 🙂 I’d put The systems in the house, treating the water before it hits the house system. That way your faucets outside that you use to water garden, lawn, wash vehicles isn’t being run through the treatments. The cisterns should be fine with the well water.

Can't you put a Y or T on the well, have one branch going to the cistern and filter it so sediment doesn't get in, and the other side leave unfiltered for gardening and whatever else you don't need filtered water for? That is what I would look into. I would want to filter the water going into the cistern for the sake of protecting it, but that water would only be for house use. Yeah, you would be flushing filtered water down the drain (literally) but I imagine your future plumbing would thank you for that.

IMPORTANT: Put some caulking where the power line goes into the well head to keep bees/wasps out as if they make a nest in the well you will not pass the bacteria tests. 2. Our family well has had "hard: water for 40+ years, a water softener would have "fixed" it but we are satisfied with the water nature provides. We also have a little iron that does no hurt except to need to clean the toilet bowl every couple of months and the young ladies need iron supplements anyway so nature has provided this for you. 3. A simple sediment filter is all you need on this well, a whole house filter is $30 from Home Depot.

A water softener and a sediment filter will take care of iron and hardness in your water. Most water softener need at least 30 psi water pressure to work properly. Hope this helps. Also the pH is not a problem with a 7.2 just focus on hardness and iron

i live in oklahoma and we have a lot of rural area that use wells for water. i would think that because you have a clean working water system that you should consider filtration before the cisterns to insure that they stay uncontaminated in case you ever need to fill them from your community water source should the well go down for any reason. keep up the great videos and the house is looking spectacular.

High calcium level will cause build up in an on demand water heater. The most common method to reduce this is to use a water softener which can make the on demand water heater heat exchanger last much longer than not treating it. You may need to get assistance from a local water conditioning service to make recommendations. I think a water softening system can address the high iron content as well. Using a solar water heater in the summer can reduce the use of the on demand heater. A tempering tank inside the heated space of the house can also help reduce the work the water heater has by increasing the input water temperature. Food for thought, consume at will. Love following your build progress. Nice work.

Many years ago I was mayor of a small town with its own water and sewer system. We were paying a lot for water tests and we found a larger city near us that had a person who was qualified to test water by the state. We got the tests for about 1/5 of the cost a private company was charging us. We had to turn the results in to the state, we had to take two tests per month from different points in the town and keep records of where the test points were. We only had our water tested for what the state required and didn't test for hardness and many other of the things you are having tested for. We did test for every thing that was required by the state and took it seriously. Our well was 1,100+ feet deep so it was mostly calcium carbonate that we have. I would check with every city or town in the area and find out where they have their water tested and see if they can save you money.

Glad to see this report. Remember water in the cistern will lose chlorine as it sits and allow bacteria growth. I am sure you will explore all of this. As for Arsenic the new standard is 15 parts per million that result of ND does not inform you of the threshold of detection. Iron in the water gives potential for Arsenic if the water level in the well drops and runs dry for a time and iron is exposed to air, so after a dry spell (end of summer) flushing a lot of water will be advisable.

Hi guys! The vial you’re holding at 13:30 looks like a dilution vial from the company where I work. Dilu-lok is the brand name for the locking dilution vials. It’s precisely the correct size and the shrink band at the top with the red strip where the tear off is a telltale sign it’s one of ours. Hardy Diagnostics is a relatively small company that makes medical-related products such as the one here used for water testing. It’s a rare treat to catch a glimpse of one of products in the wild. 😊 Love your channel. I think if u made up a sediment filter that u can attach with unions when u need to fill system it would filter out most of your sediment that is coming up. im a lic. plumber in Massachusetts and I install filtration systems. After watching the rest of video u will need at least a couple back washing filters to clean your water up probably a iron removal filter followed up by a water softener also there are dual filters out there that clean the tanks with clean water rather then using raw water to backwash. good luck !!!!

Good update. If you use your hard water for irrigation it will plug up soaker hoses and cause build up on valves(sprinkler type) and when sprayed will leave iron stains on whatever it's sprayed on. I know because my well is pretty hard with massive amounts of iron and iron and sulfur bacteria as well. My well is irrigation only so not as worried about it. It's 100' deep and produces 10gpm at its worst at the end of a long summer drought in TX. Also appreciate the Bugaboo clips. One of our cats (smokey) is usually sitting on my lap when I watch your videos and she perks up every time she hears Bugaboo. Oh also I have to let my well run for a long time every spring to get all the sediment and sulfur smell out but after that it's good for the summer.

On our well system, we use a 1500 gallon cistern after the house, with our own pump set up on it heading into a bladder pressure tank in the house. Once every year I do a half gallon bleach into the cistern and cycle it through everything on the house.. once every 2 years I do a full gallon and bleach the house system to keep the plumbing clear and healthy. Has worked perfect the last 15+ years! We are lucky to have amazing water quality.. definitely look into a few filter setups to get your house well tasting perfect! =)

Controlling the iron content is simple, a filter with a suitable medium and back flush system will do the job and if sized correctly will lat 10 years or more. The problem is hardness, the simplest way is to dose the water with a salt but this throws up a secondary problem in that it isn't really potable and you would need to run a drinking supply to your sink/basin. Ask the folk if Bath in the UK what hard water is like, they have gravel running out of their taps. My own well is bordering on being too hard but I'm reluctant to do anything about it, I need to descale the kettle and tap spouts occassionally but that's the worst of it. Hard water is also meant to be healthier, no osteoporosis I suppose

Water treatment. The easy is appropriate here. A water softener, conventional, that addresses iron with and 'iron out' salt. shoukd work. Do not treat your garden water. And for taste yoiu may want to install a sink, cartridge, carbon filter for your drinking water. Instant hot water heater will need a consistent descaling schedule. Shift to Tide for washing machine. And you may note in showers that a detergent type soap (Dove) works better for your person or your hair.

Mixed results, glad there was no terrible news. As I was watching this I was wondering how your tests would compare to aged water from your current system. Was always a fan of your gravity powered on demand water system, only idea I had that you never came to was a underground tank near the house or even at bottom of driveway that you could offload by gravity into from your tote and then transfer to above by solar powered pump with float valve in tank to limit overfill. Still impressed by your work ethics and accomplishments.

I built my first house 40 years ago in Minnesota. We had a well. The iron content was off the map as was hardness. We found a company that sold a water softener that dealt with the iron as well as the hardness. We also put in an RO system for drinking water. Fast forward to 4 years ago building in South Dakota, and we tested our well. I don't recall the hardness results, but it's not terrible. We have no problem getting suds from soap and it tastes great. On the other hand though, we had E Coli present. The testing company advised us to put 2 gallons of bleach in the well and recirculate for a few hours (hose from the house dumping back in the well head). Well let me tell you, 2 gallons was WAY too much. Our well driller said 1/2 gallon would have been sufficient. It took a long time to purge the chlorine odor. At some point, I think we'll put a water softener in for the hot water and only the cold serving the toilets and washer. We do get calcium buildup around the faucets if we don't keep after it.

First filter and treat the water before you fill the cisterns that will help keep crud from building up them. Second and this one may not be the most practical for you but if the water line in the cistern has its opening a foot or so above the bottom then any dirt debris or crud that gets into the system will settle to the bottom and not be sucked in the outlet and come down into the house. New York City has some of the highest quality water in the country because a lot of their tall buildings have big water tanks on top and the outlet opening is a foot or two above the bottom which is what gives them such high quality water because all the crud settles. Third you talked about watering the garden and rain collection. You can probably guess where I’m going with this. Yep that’s right use collected rain water to water the garden. Well anyway keep up the good work

We live on a city well system and the city does it part to make the water acceptable. But it is not that great tasting. We added a "Pelican water systems" whole house water system and got great results. Not only is it compact but they have several items to make the system work for each user, like ozone light for bacteria. They have a system for well water systems but we did not need to go with that because our water if first cleaned to bare min. by the city. Check them out. We have a high hardness level and the water softener system does not use salt but a medium to filter out the hardness which we like, so you do not feel slick when getting out of the shower.

If it is bacterial/plant iron, I was told you can put chlorine in the well and it will remove it. It is good for people who are iron anemic as the body assimilates it well. The mineral type iron is another thing. We’ve had both and both stain. If you get a water system where you can do the bypass occasionally, then a good drink of non-filtered water can be a liquid supplement😄. Both types of iron do stain but the plant iron makes white cups, etc look like carnival glass with iridescent, pearlescent color. Still not good for toilets and appliances 😕

Good amount of research, well done and properly done too. I'm confident you'll find the best system to work for you. As a treatment operator, i'd be installing treatment at the well head as the cistern water is your safety net. You know your climate so you know what will work and how to keep it from freezing. (pro-tip: draining is the best anti-freeze solution after constant circulation) Also, knowing that the e-coli test is only $25,? That would be done on the cistern once a month in my world,

So proud of you guys. Interesting question I know nothing about. Will putting unfiltered well water into the cistern and then treating as it comes into the house have any downsides for the cistern. Can't wait to see the results of your research. Love y'all.

Guys from a well it's an amazing water, as I already said with a classic triplet PP CTO and GAC filters you are going to eliminate almost all the iron and some calcium. Of course if you keep draining water it's quite probable that it's going to clean up itself and some of those levels are going to low on their own. If I were in you I would clean the whole well tube from the top by making some water to flow in and rinse any debris to the very bottom. Let them to decant and then purge by simply running water out of the well. It's quite possible that some of that huge amount of iron comes from the drilling, so rinsing the whole tube could help.

What Most people don't know when applying new wells to their house is that it takes a huge amount of iron to do damage to your system over a very long time ! if the water tastes good to drink your iron content is very low and you don't have to worry about it at all.... ( my opinion ,obviously !) we lived off a natural spring for approximately 50 years in the same spot... about 20 years into the living there a neighbor moved in behind us and drilled a 400 ft. well and immediately our spring water changed..... we could taste the change ! before the water was sweet, after it had a mineral taste and some iron taste. however even with the change that we could taste there was no problems with the plumbing ....up to the day the house burned down the water was something to Love ! the figures given by the test people are Minute and in my opinion slanted towards filters and such.... but then I am a guy that drinks out of creeks bordered by cow pastures .... water is water to me ! I suppose having a Horse pasture above our spring made me predisposed to liking Ruel creek water LOL but a good mountain stream is what you should shoot for in your water quality...not the numbers they give you at the test places don't get me wrong, their a must ! and you should test your wells ! but as long as it's drinkable just use it as is ! save your money and buy a lincon 280 stick welder and a drill press ! you will need it ! hang in there guys .... your doing fantastically ! ....get some chickens and a big watch dog ! ( but train him!) LOL there is no better Momma protector when Dad is away than a big dog ! they take their job very seriously ! but must be trained ! .... he'ed get out on that road and be killed by a car... unless you train him to not do down there for any reason ! Dogs can be a Pain in the butt However they are a Loyal love you cannot live without as well. Bob......

Where I come from, we use filters & UV light to treat sewerage & once processed we use the refined water in industries like the manufacturing of silicone chips for the electronic industries & pump the rest into reservoirs. Get industrial filters to do the job!!

We have a well and have to use a filter and softener because our water is the same as yours. It is so worth it. Your water is way better than most cities water, except NYC( they have great water).

We have a thirty year old well, but have only been living here three years. We have not had the water tested and we have no treatment systems. We also have a high iron (?) content as stuff eventually goes reddish, like tub and toilet bowls. Our current solution for drinking water, is either from the tap, or we fill the kettle and either have hot drinks, or let it cool for cold drinks. We have now opted to feed our pets (chinchilla, cat and dog) with the kettle water, as over time the tap water leaves a greenish residue(bacteria?). So far we haven't died, but that is not a recommended test.

Good news all around. A little high calcium may be a problem over many years, but will be fine in the short term, it will just be really irritating when washing your car (invest in a good sham towel). Iron is an annoyance and will stain your sink toilet after a while. All easily treatable at the house. I would treat at house and not the cistern as the minerals would not harm your plants and a change of PH at the cistern (almost perfect now) may frustrate treating the cisterns with chlorine tablets if you choose to do that in the future.

Around my part of the country, anyone can take water and soil samples to the extension service office for testing for little to nothing. Your results arent bad at all. Looking foward to seeing what you come up to deal with the minerals.

Looks mostly good. In my opinion the ph is alittle high. Not sure of your calcium level. As long as you don't use this water untreated you should be good to go as long as it's not long term. Long term would not be good. I'm sure as thorough as you guys are, you have researched long term use of high levels of ph and calcium water. Some plants can be fusy with those aswell. Thanks again guys for another great video. Be safe.

Put a uv filter in after the tank that kills the bacteria. You can also use a water softener that uses salt and a filter to make the water soft and remove some of the hardness

i work with this all the time. OSU, Oklahoma State University does several tests on water, mainly the chemical composition and then DEQ Department of Environment Quality does the bacteria and potability. It's not that expensive. DEQ is $27.50. OSU test vary from $20 for home, livestock, crops or a brewer's panel. Check with your local extension office

That a manageable water report a softer and filtration manage the hardness.I would also test for VOC .If radon is an issue in your area I would also test for that as well.I do water testing daily for home inspection purposes.

Ya when we used to get city water to put in our cistern we had a test at at the city puts in double or triple the amount that is required by the government of fluoride we ran it through a Berkey water filter and I had the filters on their that remove fluoride and everything out of the water and we turned up with some really really good water just running it through the Berkey it was like three grains of hardness and everything else was clear as a bell we hand auger well that we have now is 18 ft well we dug down and everybody around us is 300-foot well and I know they said you can't get any good water at 18 ft but it's really good water we had it tested it's beautiful

Hi guys, love keeping up with the progress , I like all the others probably think a water filtration system direct after the pump might be a great idea with a really cool looking Swedish/finish type wooden hut built over the top of the pump might be a nice project for the future .just food for thought . /danny

In Virginia you are obliged to get water tested for coilforms. There is a way to initially bleach the system on new construction. We have a cheap charcoal filter that all the domestic water goes through. I am not a big fan of softened water but some folks like it. If sediment is a big problem you can raise the pump a few feet.

There are well water specific filtration systems that can be purchased over the counter that will take care of this problem. Also, you guys seem yo be pretty clever when it comes to this stuff, so I'm sure you could design, build and implement your own filtration system with a little learning. It is ONLY my opinion, but water seems like an issue you would want to have rectified before the baby arrives. Thank you for your content.

Get an iSpring whole house water filter for the house drinking water WGB32B (or similar) (First stage filtration on house). Take the output of that and run it into a whole house DI water system that you send to the laundry, shower, utilities. Don't drink the DI water just use it for anything you don't want hard to make a mess of things. Use some of the budget you saved with the shallow well to clean up the water. This will require the well pump to connect directly to the house. Gravity feed wont cut it with filters. Disconnect the cisterns from the house and use them to water your gardens/yard.

Good luck on your research. Reverse osmosis filters use a lot of water to make pure water, most use 10 gallons to make 1 gallon, worst I have heard of uses 20 gallons, I have also come across some as low as 4 gallons to make 1. Best wishes and eagerly await seeing your water filter system and your reasons. thanks
