You never know if there's someone else in your small town thinking the same thing. They could be much older or younger than you as well, so don't discredit people for their age. You'll find someone at some point. I grew up in a small place as well, and eventually did move and found my philosophical friends IRL :)

This is so philosophical. I think the emotion you are trying to evoke with the whole dystopia/utopia is similar to the story of “Don’t Look Up” and “Nope”. I'm thinking that artists offer a mirror - they show us parts of ourselves we wouldn't notice or think about otherwise. And through that, we learn more about ourselves, our oppinions, emotions, this reality... Everything. I think artists aren't trying (or supposed) to show us how things are - they offer us the chance to find out for ourselves. It's almost like the art is a portal to a hidden/forgotten place inside our psyche. I've been wondering about the meaning of art as well, this video got me thinking so thank you! Hi Ms Valerie. I don't know if you'll see this but I just want you to know how much your videos have enriched my life. It was a major phone addict when I found your channel. I used to lock myself up in my room and stare at my phone screen for hours. I knew I wasn't happy but I couldn't get myself to stop. After finding your videos, I tried to incorporate the lessons you taught into my life and I became so much more mindful of my behaviour. It took me a couple of months but now, I have largely recovered from a year long addiction. Mindfulness has made me happier than ever before and I owe a large part of it to what I have learnt from you. I'm still pretty young so I'm happy to have realized this at a young age. Oh my gosh! I have had a very confusing last three days, week actually, and it has tempted me to feel bad. But I don't want to feel bad , and now I have found you. I am struggling hard right now trying not to lose the joy and happiness I find in my creative process because circumstances have led me to a place of comparing myself to others and coming up lacking, of pressure to commercialize and to perform to the expectation of others with a judgement of not meeting the prescribed expectations . I'm not with out skill, I know that, I've invested much time money and effort in skill building but my sensitivity and the thought process and the act of concentration and focus seem like they want to be protected so that my own unique expression or even the spirit coming through can manifest. This is about something within me that wants me to recognize and integrate it , alchemize if you will, as you talk about so wonderfully. A sort of Asperger approach to life, that leaves me stiff and socially awkward, uncomfortable, anxious . I have started to address it in my visual work trying to bring more rhythm, more poetry, more childlike playfulness which I guess makes the work more of a therapy than a commercial venture. So there you have it. I love your emphasis on authenticity and your thought processes and the example you set.

I relate to this feeling you had of asking yourself why you're creating art and not really coming up with a "good" reason and it felt strange realising I never wondered why I create art. After an hour or two I realised my why and it's just three words. art allows growth. Humans are amazing but in my opinion we need the inspiration and motivation to unlock our potential and I feel art does that in all its different forms, be that movies, dance, cooking, writing, music, etc. Art creates for us the opportunity to become better & grow. I love the pauses and knitted eyebrows while thinking hardly of your deep thoughts. I imagine a calm and collected state of mind is more vital for a water colour painter because of the concentration required, working in an unforgiving medium. You can't scrape it off or sand it back and repaint it, as you can with oils, for example. Every stroke has to be right.

Hi, I'm a psychology student and is also an art enthusiast. This video, especially the voice over, is very deep. The "why's" question you asked is an indication of existential crisis, which is understandable at our human nature. This also indicates that no matter how we neglect it, the fact is we can't comprehend everything "through science" hence the existence of "spiritual". No matter how much beautiful or good you tried to live on earth, without a relationship to your deeper and higher self, your "purpose" in life would be undetermined... which is sad because we're the kind of creatures that which crave for meaning and purpose... And so, the ONE whom created us put that "why's" questions inside our heart for us to SEEK the TRUTH... the purpose... The meaning... Why we're here. And let me tell you, I found my answer through these verses (and some deep-dive study background behind these:) Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. Proverbs 24:14 . Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV) "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end." . Valerie, are a lovely and brilliant young lady.. talented as well obviously! I always love your videos and wish that I could just sit with you in your room and be a part of your thought train and have some deep conversations with you about life. You bring up things that most people don't choose to talk about and some to never even question or try to understand. And usually not until they've lived a long life do they start to ponder in such ways. You are wise beyond your years. Yes, I agree art is here to inform us about our lives and often is the record of our times and therefore our history. Some art however is not made of such grist but only an expression of the artists feelings brought upon like you say from observing the life around them and choosing to focus on either the negative or the positive. I often paint intuitively and the end result is left open for the viewer to interpret. Oh and I had to laugh when you started talking about keeping your flat clean! It does take a lot of time and energy and as an artist I find that sometimes I put my art or even my emotional health, for example taking a walk at the beach, as priorities over and above a spic and span spotless clean environment! Sure I love my house to be super duper squeaky clean but it is time consuming and sometimes it's okay to put other more important things in front of the need to have a perfectly clean environment. So I do a little bit every day and then nothing gets too out of hand. I live alone so there are times when I think no one will see this mess so I don't care if it's like this for weeks and I sometimes let the mess stay for weeks! That's the privilege of living alone! However I always love it when a friend chooses to visit as it gives me the impetus to take care of those little areas that have been neglected, like a huge pile of laundry or the excessive dust on the book shelves. I hope you find balance in your life in this way because it is not fun to be a slave to housekeeping! And please dont let anyone tell you how it should be or what you are doing is right or wrong. This is only for you to decide. Thank you for your rambling today I thoroughly enjoyed your video and your interesting conversation. Sending much Aloha across the many miles.💞🌺🌈🙋‍♀️

Although I don't have that much knowledge about philosophy I often think the way you are. It's nice to listen to you and create my understanding of life. Lately I started thinking again where the feelings come from. For example let's say roses. There are people that love them and the one that hate them. For some they will be beautiful for some ugly. Then the next thought was that, one rose can evoke different feelings in different people. Is there actually correct way of perceiving things? Should we all think the same way about the same things? Is the person that hate roses wrong? Then I realised that my thoughts about things are kinda separate from those things. I'm giving meaning to them. They don't have any before I create it. Every feeling/reaction is my creation. Some of them are coded into us before birth. We add many during our lifetimes but we are constantly giving meaning to everything and creating new things. Then I jumped into thought that maybe that's why Universe is always growing. We discover new things and give meaning to them. We decide how to feel about them how to react. Then I connected it with the theory that everything is about energy, frequency and vibrations and the saying that "at the beginning there was a word" and it kinda makes sense. Word start the chain of naming and defining things. It creates meaning basically. Everyone creates their own story in their own "language" and express it it their own unique ways. If we supposed to think and feel the same way, If there is one "correct" way of reacting and feeling then we wouldn't exist. (If that makes sense 😄) because we would kinda reverse time. Create less meaning. Going back to origin. As it is with babies. First there is one cell with all information, this cell knows it all. This cell don't have the brain and nervous system yet but it's complete. It's the source of existence but don't have neurones, blood or thoughs. It's alive but don't have a heart. This cell only job is to divide. Then all the organs are created each responsible for different things. Theoretical different but still from one source. It's all already coded in this one cell. Then the baby become conscious and creates new meanings and expand the world. Or at least that's how I feel lately. Super long message but I kinda wanted to express myself too. 😁

I’ve watched your videos from time to time and was always captivated by how you have such a strong vision of your art and are able to bring it to life, where each stroke is meaningful no matter how small. I now understand more your thought process behind this. You think a lot like me. I am no consistent artist so my topics are different but I always look for deeper meaning within myself, whatever my mind is occupied with. I think you have beautiful perspectives which I wish I could just spawn into my brain somehow.
