A truly classic Korean soup. I grew up in a vegetarian + flexitarian household. This soup was made almost twice a week for dinners. Thanks for this video!
@lepetitenellie3 жыл бұрын
Other major staples besides kongnamul soup for our family were spinach soup (시금치 국), daikon soup (무국) and potato soup (감자 국). For every major family get togethers, when the moms & grannies prepared breakfast for the mixed bag of vegetarians + flexitarians, the soup of the morning was usually between kongnamul or spinach soup.

Such a simple and delicious meal. I really like kongnamul guk, but I don't make it often because soybean sprouts are so expensive where I live. They're about four times the price of mung bean sprouts. Maybe I should grow some myself. 🤔
@katl88253 жыл бұрын
Omg you’re above 400 vids already?! 😳also, coming from a Chinese household that primarily eats mungbean sprouts and not soy, would you say there are major differences between the two / is it ok to sub?
@natviolen40213 жыл бұрын
I have the same question. Never have seen other sprouts than mungbean and would rather not try sprouting soybeans myself.
@jenlong20003 жыл бұрын
I've subbed one for the other and it was fine
@a_pet_rock3 жыл бұрын
They are not okay to sub. The soybean sprouts need longer cooking while mung bean sprouts are edible raw and would be mushy if you boiled them this long.
@natviolen40213 жыл бұрын
@@a_pet_rock Well, as the soybean sprouts don't seem to have a distinctive flavor, then it's not really a problem, right? I just can add the sprouts last

Thank you for adding to my Korean lessons, I just had to write down the Hangul for Kongnamul (and spring onion, from another of your videos I just watched), so I can look for it the next time I'm at the Asian grocery store.

@MinttMeringue3 жыл бұрын
When I make this soup, I use dried (shiitake) mushrooms! Often when making these soup broths I just use kelp, but for stronger broths that use a lot of anchovies I used dried mushrooms and I think it works well.

Hurro. Can someone who is also watching from somewhere in the UK please back me up here: our supermarket bean sprouts are TERRIBLE quality. They decay REALLY quickly and go soggy and brown. Whenever I go to H-Mart to buy sprouts they're bone dry and just...WOW! Really, really good quality. They look exactly like the sprouts in this video. But not the mainstream supermarket sprouts, which STINK too. What is going on with sprouts in the UK?!

Are you allergic to soy? Cause it be better to say you have a soy allergic since tofu, soy sauce, and fermented bean paste (deonjang/cheonggukjang) is from soybean. Gochujang has soy too... idk what you'd be able to eat. Unseasoned pork belly?
