I knew a kid in high school (late 80's- yes I'm old) that put quarter skins on his Cutlass. instead of the traditional way of doing it, he folded a lip on the new skins and tucked them under the existing metal of the car, then plug welded them- similar to how your quarters meet the roof line. He then leaded the entire seam from the taillights to the doors. He still has that car and you still can't tell the quarter skins were changed unless you look at the backside in the trunk area. Being that it was a 79 Cutlass, he wasn't too concerned with how it looked in the trunk, but the exterior still looks great.

I worked in a radiator shop for 10 years and what you are doing isnt all that much different than fixing radiators. we used propane and oxygen to melt the lead you could control the heat better and pinpoint where you needed the heat the most. keep up the good work and you will be fixing radiators in no time at all.

And remind me why car builders do not do this anymore? Chemicals given off the lead harmful? Plastic is easier? I don’t get it. Good work. Loved watching this.

It’s a lot easier to smear filler across the gap and call it good. I’ve seen filler fail a lot more than I have lead! Do it once and do it right!

Great video. I'm about to put the new roof skin on my '72 challenger project. It came with the vinyl top, and when removing the old skin, regular body filler was used vs. lead. Possibly because of the vinyl, or maybe this thing had already had work done and re-vinyled before the current owner got it?

Excellent job as usual. I am not a body guy so I am asking what is the purpose of using lead? If your spot welds are done correctly, your body panel to roof line should be strong enough. I know lead was old school and for originality that is the way to go. However, this car is going to be a beast👍 and the furthest thing from original. So why not body filler?
@rustbucketrestos65112 жыл бұрын
Because this car is going to see a lot of sun. Fiberglass expands at a different rate than sheet metal and over time the filler will expand and lead to failure. Putting too much work into this one to have to come back and do it right in a few years.

Just a question here if ya leaded the C-pillar l guess for originality why then are you going to put that engine in your car. Are you also going to put the tubular cross member and a-arms in it too. If so then why didn't ya just marglass the c-pillars.
@rustbucketrestos65112 жыл бұрын

So... why wild you lead the seam in the first place? Is it just so you don't need a thick coat of bondo? I would guess that thr lead isn't going to shrink like standard fillers do, but is that all?
@rustbucketrestos65112 жыл бұрын
Exactly right. Much higher chance of failure. Over time the filler will swell and lead to a higher chance of failure. With thousands of hours going into the rebuild of the car, it’s not worth it to save 30 minutes.
@TheREALJosephTurner2 жыл бұрын
Plus lead is the way the factory did it. You can find plenty of 40+ year old cars with the quarters rotted almost completely off of them, yet the old lead joints are still intact and undamaged.

Higher chance of failure down the road. Especially with cars that see a lot of sun. The filler expands at a different rate than the steel and over time it will swell and lead to paint failure.
