The tip about learning conjugations is actually useful. When I first began learning Polish, I learnt the conjugations early on so that when I encountered a word, I could try to recognise which conjugation it's in. For example if I saw the word zobaczyłem, I would recognise that the "łem" ending is masculine first-person past. So even if I didn't have a dictionary, I would know it's some verb that the male speaker says he did in the past. And if I had a dictionary I could just find an infinitive that fits the "zobaczy-" stem. Of course conjugation tables can be complex and difficult to memorise, and at least for me, I had to learn it through memorising example sentences of where certain conjugations are used. But if you can learn the most useful conjugations early, it can definitely help.

Here’s a real tip. I learned Spanish by immersion and self taught. As I spoke with people in Spanish I carried a small note book with me. If as I was speaking with someone and realized I didn’t know how to say something, I would write it in my notebook and look it up when I got home. Likewise, if in normal conversation I heard a Spanish word I didn’t understand I would write it down and look it up. This way I learned vocabulary I would actually use in everyday conversation.

Norwegian is a good „gateway“ language, it came from Danish but also has connections to Swedish (ofc not surprisingly, since Norway and Sweden are very close to each other), so Norwegians understand both Danish and Swedish people at least a bit, but Swedish people don’t really understand Norwegian people that much and Swedish and Danish folks kinda have big problems understanding each other At least that’s what I heard I‘m German and currently learning Norwegian, so my knowledge about the Scandinavian relationships is quite limited

I read once about a mob boss who DID memorize the dictionary while he did a long stretch in prison. When he got out, he had a great party trick he could do. Often these guys were very intelligent and had great memories, because they were bookmakers as kids. They had to memorize all the bettors and bets they made, because if they wrote anything down, the police could use the paper records as evidence against them. So far, it is not illegal to memorize names and numbers.
