I speak few languages and I must say, before a purchase a game or movie, I check always the languages and subtitles available. Netflix also became a big tool not only to learn but also keep my languages active on my brain. Living in a foreign country for few years made me loose some vocabulary and writing skills from my own native language. I sometimes get confused with Italian because of similarities with Spanish, portuguese and french which makes my brain get confused. For the lack of contact with german, I'd have to start almost from scratch. My advice is: Learn your first foreign language first, any language you start, try to bring it to the intermediate level and then, you can start to learn a new language working with both in parallel. The most important is: Learn a language that is backed up by culture that you like, it takes time, but the reward is great.

Also, your piece of advice on lexicon improvement seems very convincing. I am an Italian learning Czech now, and I will try to put it to the test.

I'm learning at the Moment Hungarian and for Grammar and Vocabulary I'm reading my favourite Book in Magyar, "The Lord of the Rings". I've read this Book 30 times in English alone, 4 or 5 times in German, a couple of times in French and once in Gaelic over the years. But I noticed that when you don't use a Language frequently you lose some and sometimes a lot of it. My Swahili and Chichewa are almost none existent. When I speak with my mother in German, I sometimes slip without noticing into English, the same goes when I speak with Cousins and Friends in France.

Have the exact same problem. The more languages i learn the, more i mix them. It's kinda annoying when you talk with someone in German but automatically you slip some English or even another language in the sentence and vice versa.

@demiurgo - Simple, I've been living for 30 years now on the Continent of Africa, was spending some time in East Africa after I got out of Rwanda and Swahili was a language easily to learn and a kind of Universal Language in that Region, next to English and French. Chichewa I learned in Malawi afterwards, living as I did in Cape Maclear in a Mud House on Lake Malawi for 7 month. I live in South Africa (11 official Languages) now and can understand Xhosa, but I can't speak it very well (I have trouble with the Clicking Sound). Afrikaans I can understand, but I don't like the Language. In my ear it has no Melody. Hungarian I'm learning since my plan, as soon as I can sell everything, is to move there. I'm fed up living in a Multicultural Society that isn't a Society, just a conglomerate of Warring Tribes. I'm fed up having to sleep with a weapon close to hand, with both ears and one eye open. A reason I wouldn't want to go back to Merkelstan, formerly known as Germany. Gaelic I learned as a little boy from my Irish Grandmother, but I rather doubt I would be able to hold a conversation now.

@Camilla's Camera I think you're confusing dialects with accents , if you are learning English wih American pronunciation you are learning Engliish wih an American accent, accents are the way of how people from a specific territorry articulate the words of any given language, dialects are a set of regionalisms and non-standardised words used in a region usually in colloquial speech

Then grammar is going to come naturally to you. I'm already bilingual. Learning a language of similar origin is so much easier (obviously) it also keeps you motivated. For example , i'm able to understand about 60% of the Dutch I hear or read, because I'm already fluent in a language of similar origins. I could probably learn any Balkan originating language, since I have a base knowledge of Slovenian. Not to mention that they are an adjacent country.

Your comment on "summoning the demon of the corn faction" was hilarious! Excellent video. I myself have decided to focus on only Modern Greek for six months to a year before moving on to Ancient Greek (Koine and Attic). I am focusing on training my ear and understanding native speakers and on reading a lot as a way to acquire vocabulary, and focusing less on learning to speak phrases. Listening to Polyglot Steven Kaufman's advice on listening is helping a lot, and of course listening to your advice has also helped. Another note: There is no sense for me in learning the dead dialects of an ancient written language (Ancient Greek) if I can't yet even fluently speak, read, write and understand the speakers of the living form of that language as it exists today (Modern Greek). That said, I am at a good level in both my ancient and modern Greek as well as Latin but am by no means fluent, as of yet.

I often compare learning languages to sports, to summerize there's 3 steps of learning a sport: -Priming, you just spectate the thing even you don't understand what is going on(Repeat this step every time you do the latter steps) -Then basics, learn what is a throw what's a kick etc -Mastery, just keep adding variation to your skill set until you became as good as the player you're watching Yes some people are better at sports by nature but you can do the same by being patient, trust me i hated the gym class. For example I primed english with songs and video content, learned what speakers use for adjectives or pronouns etc and started to recongize the patterns or even start using idioms, when you're sufficent at understanding speech you just expand on your vocabulary. Biggest tip keep word-reference app running, never say "i'll just look it up later" to the word you wanna know in another language. Sometimes you might like a sport not played by many, lets say trying to find a hockey player in Turkey (struggle is real lol) so you may have to stick with theoretical practice for a long time, yes you will stutter and stop like a fool or even worse you developped wrong techniques when you first try to speak for realsies but that's expected, I'm livin' in Italy for the past 3 months and trust me i don't remember a single conversation didn't included "Non ho ancora imparato la vostra lingua" (I still didn't improved your language yet) , you just have to accept that you're not there yet and add more to your speech.

Thank you very much for this lesson. This is how I learnt English language: Playing video games > watching movies and shows with subtitles in my language | reading and searching information on internet > watching movies and shows with english subtitles | reading books in english and writing on english forums > actually talking with other people in english using VoIP. And using Dictionaries in mobile phone/online to look up a new word every time I meet or need it. Increases vocabulary immensely. I have been considering picking up another language for some time now, but after watching this video I decided to start right away. My native language is Czech, fluent in English, although I could use more speaking practice, and basics of German. I'm going to improve my German and pick Russian or Chinese.

Something I would add: Don't be ashamed of making mistakes when you start of using a new language! I can say from experience, that some people don't even bother trying to use a new language, because they are afraid of being made fun of, when they make mistakes. But! Nobody starts of perfekt! Most people will actually really apreciate the fact, that you are trying to learn their language. You don't need to care about those, that won't. It's ok to make mistakes in the begining, as long as you are understood. Nice people will correct you (which you shouldn't take as an offence!) and you will become better.

I can testify to the fact that pronunciation is good to get as close to native as possible. For instance I know almost no Finnish , but I know a little and I really practice my pronunciation. This has meant that what I know has become a really solid foundation and my Finnish friends can tell I'm actually putting in effort even though I almost don't know anything, also it doesn't feel wierd to mix English and Finnish when speaking with them. For instance I always just say "mitä" to them instead of "what".

I can understand 90+% of what people say in a video in English, but as long as I can remember my speaking skills have ground to a halt due to the fact that I live in a monolingual country, Norway. I haven't acquired the same level of fluency in speaking as I have in writing, reading and comprehending English. Fortunately, I've got a friend who's not that comfortable speaking in Norwegian, so I can exploit the situation by speaking as much English with him as possible.

Noticing the accent can be surprisingly tough. I'm an Austrian who grew up in Baveria, Germany. I had never a problem there being understood, but when I moved to Switzerland, I met some Germans that didn't understand me and I was completely surprised by it. They had little exposure to Austrians, nor Baverians... I would have never thought that it would make such a difference, as Swiss German is much more different than Austrian vs German. The other funny thing I noticed is that hardly anyone ever guesses my origin correctly when I speak English. They know that I'm not a native speaker, but they don't associate my accent to German. Even weirder many understand me very well and a few struggle a lot.

Hi Metatron, i am a follower of your channel for a while now. There are some videos on your channel, where you analyze the historical accuracy of video games and movies. I am interested in your opinion and in that context i would have a suggestion for a new video. My favorite movie about the old feudalistic Japan is the miniseries “Shogun” by James Clavell in 1980. I think even the main theme of the soundtrack is epic. The first time i saw it as a child in the former GDR state television. I think it was on a black and white TV without a remote control. :-) Many years later the series was released as a DVD box. When i watched the series the first time after so many years, i thought to myself: “Wtf? Where are the subtitles?”. In the box's inlet i read that this was exactly the purpose of the director. The viewer should feel like a Westerner and like Richard Chamberlain, forced to learn some Japanese too. Now my question: Did you already see this series? Could you please make video about the historical accuracy of the movie series “Shogun”? How accurate are the costumes, props and battles? Is the treatment of the European sailors or the subordinate natives realistically represented? Such a video by you would be awesome. Thank you and best wishes from Germany.

Since January, I have picked up two extras, sort of, Croatian-Bosnian and Romanian. Put in the time, and practice. @69. NB the Wikipedia description of R. Vowels is wrong! ă equals Estonian õ, & î/â equals Turkish ı....

I had a friend in college who could speak fluent Polish since her parents were from Poland, but she never learned the read or write Polish. Even though it's the same Latin alphabet as English, with a few diacriticals sprinkled in, the orthography is just tricky enough that speaking it doesn't translate well into writing it. Of course, English spelling is quite the abomination compared to how the language is spoken, but I expect the reasons for the (mostly the great vowel shift, but also the generous importation of words from numerous other languages) are different compared to Polish.

It's also pretty satisfying to see certain role playing games that separate speaking from writing when it comes to skill selection. Fading Suns does this, and even has certain languages that are only spoken or only written (due to races that never developed writing, or races that have gone extinct and only their writings remain, the same reasons you find here in reality).

It's easy to read once you learn the letter combos. Like "cz"

I don't exactly agree with the idea that each skill is learned separately. I think a general exposure to the language is overall going to help you better every side of a language's skillset, though obviously the specific skill trained i.e writing is going to improve that skill the most. I speak from experience, I'd say I haven't even dedicated 0.5% of my time to practice spoken english, but when I got to actually use it i.e a ~20 min presentation in Uni I didn't do bad, even if obviously it is my least developed skill. I think a constant practice of reading and writing is going to nevertheless slowly help you think in the language, and once you are able to think, you are for the most ready to talk, albeit perhaps with a funny accent.

"...how difficult is it really to say 'If I had enough time I would go to Rome'" It stopped me for a second to think - how would I say it in English?

Do you have any suggestions for someone who failed high school because they failed the only language that they speak? I failed all four years of remedial English.

Metatron I know this is not relevant to this video, linking back to gaming, I think you should at least check out or play a game called Total War Shogun 2. It's a very high recommendation, It has swords and Samurai and everything linking back to the history of Japan.
