Great stuff again, Stuart. These clips are so motivating and are essential for pushing all of us towards our goals. Always grateful thankyou.

sorry for writing another comment but I'm listening and I am getting excited haha. About the word give I had a girlfriend. I told her a few times and then I gave up that in English we say "lend", but anyway she kept saying "give borrow". How blind I was that it took me 4 years to start discovering what is actually going on here, in this culture and language. I need that book Stu! :)

This kind of video is one of the main reasons I subscribed to your channel quite a few years ago now. (For anyone else reading this, Stu is Australian and I’m afraid more and more Australians are saying “rout” when they mean “route”. Supposedly because the correct pronunciation of “route” sounds very similar to “root” and “rooting” is used for “rutting”.) In response to a reply: Living language is one thing, just using the wrong word out of ignorance or peer pressure is another. There are many people that reverse “bought” and “brought”. That doesn’t make it correct to do so.

Excellent. I need this. One concept I realised is a concept which doesn’t fit into English. When I ask about certain food, sometimes they say it’s “man”. When I try to narrow down what they mean and eliminate everything from sweet to salty to sour & bitter or savoury, I realise that man is just something which doesn’t translate. I believe it’s more of a texture than a taste because of mankiow (so cute I want to bite). Man + kiow (a texture + canine teeth). But I’m just trying to work it out as a novice

Wow thanks for this video, now I'm sure I will buy this book. Thai is the first tonal language I learn but I plan to learn Mandarin or Vietnamese too. Just we'll need to wait for my salary as I'm totally broke as actually I've been for the whole year :)

Interesting. I am native Cantonese (the tones and the Thai phrases that are simply Chinese) and I can read Sanskrit. In a year of learning Thai I really got away with a lot.

15:40 I don't think "ทาน" is a correct written/polite language as it is from "รับประทาน". I searched the word "ทาน" as "to eat" in พจนานุกรม ฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน website and there is no meaning associated to eating. I think it's only use in speaking as an incorrect polite language. I recommend using the full "รับประทาน", I'm pretty sure that's correct.

You’re technically right because in Thai especially in school there is a distinction between ภาษาเขียน and ภาษาพูด but it’s hardly used outside of, basically, the bts saying “ห้ามรับประทานอาหารและเครื่องดื่ม….” Or on signs

It is a sad world when we can’t say certain words because those words have also been used for something else unrelated to the meaning of the word.

Hi Stuart, thanks for the video. Can you please explain how to acces the Indic consonant compass? I already sent an email to the address on the page.
@StuartJayRaj2 жыл бұрын
if you're just wanting to access the compass itself, I've linked to an open version here. mindkraft.me/consonant-compass/ There is an entire module in my Cracking Thai Fundamentals suite called Learning Indic Based Scripts which shows how to use it in learning scripts and understanding sounds and the mouth / articulation

"How to learn Thai.", or "How to learn the Thai language". "How to learn Thai language" is not correct English.
