You hit the nail on the head. The first year that I took music theory training I didn't connect with any of it. Then one day it just all clicked and made sense. It really opens things up with focusing chord tones and different voicings of the chord inversions. Only problem is I cant stop playing phrygian dominant and lydian phrases now.
