In this video we will be learning about Ikigai and other things people of Okinawa do to live a long and happy life from the book of Ikigai - Japanese secret to a long and happy life by Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles.
So here are 10 things we should learn from people of Okinawa to live a long and happy life.
01. Follow your ikigai
02. Take it slow
03. Don’t fill your stomach
04. Surround yourself with good friends
05. Smile
06. Reconnect with nature
07. Give thanks
08. Exercise
09. Live in the moment
10. Never retire
Okinawa is an island, South of mainland Japan, containing some of the world’s longest living humans. On average, men live until 84 and women until 90. There are also a very high concentration of people who are 100 or more. Even the oldest Okinawans are considered healthy and have the emotional, physical and intellectual capacity to live and function independently. Those who study why the inhabitants of this island in the south of Japan live longer than people anywhere else in the world believe that one of the keys - in addition to a healthy diet, a simple life in the outdoors, green tea, and the subtropical climate - is the ikigai that shapes their lives. Ikigai. Iki meaning “to live” and gai meaning “reason” - or as we would say in English, Ikigai means your reason to live.

My mother in law is from a small island not too far from Okinawa. Her island is named Kikai. She just turned 96. Other than bad hearing and blood pressure she has no visible health issues. She has been living with us for a couple of years now and is a true joy. Up every morning around 7:30, hair fixed up, dressed nice and ready to face the day. She loves a vegetable rich diet, especially sweet potatoes (there’s a Japanese variety we find sometimes). She helps out in the kitchen, crochets every day, loves to watch golf (very passionately), and tries to walk outside a bit everyday. She stretches a lot throughout the day. She keeps herself very busy with little things every day. She laughs and smiles a lot, sometimes she gets down thinking about her older daughter that passed a couple of years ago, but day to day she is smiling. We play cards and she wins just as much as us youngsters in our 60s. What’s really funny is sometime she tries to bend the rules a bit to win.....🤣 I watch her and try to absorb her wisdom about life and living.

When I was 21 years old I worked in a convenient store in Texas. One day an older lady came in and you could see she spend most of her life frowning. She had deep frown lines. It was at that moment I decided I was going to have laugh lines when I got older. My 54th birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and guess what...I have my laugh lines. I am constantly told I shine or I'm bright or I have a great vibe once I was even told I looked mystical. And all because I decided 30+ years ago to have laugh lines.

"The key is to have a few, 3 or 4, good friends." True enough. But also, try to be your own best friend. Because regardless friendships will come, they will go, especially here in the West. But you'll be with you a lifetime. So strive to be happy with this relationship first and foremost. John~ American Net'Zen

You, this video and the good people who are also grateful and, therefore, contributing to this learning are on my gratitude list tonight. Advice to myself and those interested is to not expect or eventually try to be perfect at Ikigi. Celebrate everytime there is any attempt or success in the moment. Congratulate yourself. If we beat ourselves up, we are more likely to give up as we tend to avoid doing things we get punished for. Go slowly. Thank you.

My family tends to have long lifespans on both spans and sometimes it scares me but this video was nice. I'm going to care for my health and fitness as much as possible so I can enjoy my old age more if I end up very old. My great grandmas were 96 and 100 when they died and my grandad who died in 2018 was 85 which is quite old for a man... I was still angry about it though because I was only 23 but I was born into the family late so I was lucky to get as much time with him as I did.
