I'm an American but went to school at George Watsons when it was a girl's school on George Square. We had a cookery class and laundry class and learned as young girls to do some of the things that you show - including how to starch napkins, pillowcases and even handkerchiefs. With the silver polishing, get a baby toothbrush, one that is very soft, so it won't scratch the silver and it helps to get into all the small corners and details. All these tasks can be made more elegant when you have lovely music in the background, like you put behind your narration.

I'm old enough to have taken three years of home economics classes. I really enjoyed it. I worked in the financial field for 10 years then became a mom at home. I really leaned on those classes as a mom. I was able to sew elaborate Halloween costumes and bake creative desserts. Thank you Nicholas for helping those of your viewers who aren't as lucky as I and for giving me a few new tips. (I've unpacked the good china to use daily!)

A tip from my mother - if you don't have time to get to ironing your linens, while they are in that 'not quite dry' state, lay them out flat in a stack, roll them up in a dampened towel (those waffle weave IKEA towels are perfect) like a jelly roll and pop the entire thing into the fridge. Your now have two or three days grace to get your ironing done. Ironing napkins and handkerchiefs was how I learned. I was very proud when my mom let me iron my father's dress shirts.

I love ironing myself. It's calming. As A child my job was to shine the family shoes, paste, polish and shine, much like doing the silver. In those days one didn't go to church with messy shoes or clothes.

I remember being tasked with polishing the silver, as well as setting the table for Thanksgiving dinner as a child... while my mom got the meal ready. I felt so grown-up and responsible! I'll have to get more linens of my own now for future meals and practice caring for them as they deserve. It makes a real difference!

Yes, I also like the old ways. When I was young my nanny, Ms. Martha, used and empty Coca-Cola bottle with a cork top. She filled it with very warm water and powder starch then shook it till dissolved. The holes in the cork sprinkled over the cloth to which she would steam iron. Everything came out so shapely and fresh! A dash of lavender makes a fresh fragrance. Unbelievable!

Just like my grandmother used to starch her linens and aprons… She used this method of starching at least once a week, and I would watch her every move. She would roll each piece into a ball to keep it from drying out, and we would iron them out together in her huge kitchen. It always amazed me how beautifully they came out. Ha, you're a sorcerer! The effect your videos have on me is amazing: Just having finished my video calls, I see your new video. Watch it for 5 minutes. Stop it and instead of quickly making myself a bread for dinner and eating it on the couch with my legs up as I had intended to, I go to the kitchen and think what I would do if I had guests. I take the new sets out, cut the bread and lay it on an extra dish as well as the ham, choose the nice dishes and carry everything on a tray to my dining table, sit down and thoroughly enjoy the meal - and finish watching your video. As an Antique Dealer, we have a lot of silver. I have great deal of respect for staff that used to do this job back in the Victorian And Edwardian Eras. Of course we have the "double whammy" of many brass chandeliers. We actually have a schedule and at twice a week we pull various items out of inventory so they can be polished between dealing with customers. It's a lot of work but presentation in our shop is everything. I cringe when I do into an antique shop and find siver sitting unpolished and looking like a discard.

Oh Nicholas you dropped me down a rabbit hole called memory. When I first did my first aid training with St Andrews Ambulance Association the woman's company indoor uniform was the old nurses uniform with a white bib apron.on the night before my first annual inspection I did just as you did with the napkins only I may have been a little over enthusiastic with the starch my apron stood proudly to attention in the corner without the need of a human mannequin to support it. I swear that I smelled that special odor (which I like) when your steam iron hit those napkins! Some of you who've ironed a lot with starch may know that smell🤩👌. Mom taught us to make the starch and then we put it into a spray bottle. Or shook it on with a closed fist... both sides. But one needs to wash nozzle, etc thoroughly after. I may start ironing the top edge of my sheets again! Thanks young man!

You are completely an elegant man. Even the personal stationary adds such an elegant touch to your get well gift for your neighbour that is feeling poorly upstairs. Pressing starched napkins is such a calming task. I always have to be careful. I am always afraid of scorching them when ironing. I did this once to one of my favourite napkins and have been so cautious since. I cover the napkin with a clean white cotton tea towel (only use it for this task) when ironing to prevent any further accidents. They feel so fresh and new when the task is completed. I also add a few drops of lavender essential oil and mix well into my starch solution. Your guests get a whiff of country fresh elegance when used. This is another good trick for your pillow cases and top end of your sheets. Cotton sheets smell so good and the bedroom carries a hint of lavender fragrance to the air. Your thoughtful ways add such a warmth and charming compliment to you as a person. God Bless you and your lovely soul always.

🙋‍♀️So very kind of you to bake cookies for your neighbour. With the silver service, china and linens, my parents served tea and sweets every Sunday evening. We used silver, china and cloth napkins daily, the silver flatware was in a kitchen drawer. I like to think my parents and grandparents were ahead of their time. No plastic, aerosols or one time use items were purchased. I use cape cod polishing cloths. The cloths have a pleasant scent. I prefer to shop locally, but they are probably available on Amazon. I have a tip to extend your cut flowers given to me from a friend who is a flower importer.. When flowers start to wilt snip off the tips, massage the stems with a motion of downward strokes to release the air pockets... replace them into fresh water and voila... flowers that last to a week or more.. ❤❤❤ Enjoy you being you Nicholas we love you. ❤❤❤

This was great. Love polishing silver; very therapeutic. If your silver is ornate or has detailing that creates depressions or crevices, you might want to go over everything with a soft hair brush (paint brush) first to remove any dust or particles that might scratch when you buff. Also when removing water from your wet napkins, squeeze it as a ball as opposed to twisting. Twisting weakens the fibers.

Great video Nicolas. I’m a recovering silver addict. At one time I had three sets of silver flatware, multiple serving pieces, candelabra and a butler’s tray with a tea tipper, coffee pot, sugar and creamer. Since downsizing all I have is the silver flatware that has been in the family many years. After watching this video I now want to start building another collection. Send help!

I like to use cloth napkins as well. I have some white ones that I use for fancy dinners. I also have many sets that I have made with colorful fabrics. Florals, plaids, etc. When using all white dishes the colorful napkins can real make my table scape unique.

Nicolas, I had a client who brought baked goodies on a lovely china plate. I mentioned that I would return the dish, he told me the dish was a gift and he told me he loved going to estate sales and yard sale so he could collect dishes that he could give with his baked goodies. My neighbor does this with vases so she always has vases to bring flowers to cheer people up. I started to do the same, it makes me feel good to let someone know there is no need to return the dish. Such a lovely thought to make the cookies for your neighbour. I agree absolutely about using your silver, china, and linen. I love linen napkins and take care of them very carefully - but use spray starch. Didn’t realise you could still get the powder starch - remember my mum with a bowl of starch out, using it to starch all sorts of things when I was a child. I count myself very fortunate to be able to live in a time where we can buy beautiful things, like Wedgwood and Crown Derby China, linen napkins, double damask tablecloths, and silver plate tea services, all at reasonable prices on auction websites ( if you shop around a bit) because folks no longer want the bother of caring for them. I use all my china - no point leaving it in the cupboard. Like you I love entertaining, and find when the dining table is set up beautifully, find folks linger, and really enjoy the meal. In fact at my New Years Eve dinner party we nearly missed midnight - we were still at the dining table at 11.45pm! Thank you so much for your enjoyable and relaxing videos.

Nicholas, I am affirmed by your views about living, but also feel foolish sometimes. When I am awakened by the cry of a toddler who has wet the bed, the child who has misplaced her backpack, a phone call, etc., my morning tea flies out the window. I love my children and home, but paper napkins are the choice for every day. I can treat myself, alone or with a friend, or take a pretty bath, but I have chosen to continue to love beauty no matter what the day brings and to be thankful!

Ironing napkins and tablecloths makes everything look so nice and finished. i wash all of my china, etc by hand so things are not damaged or broken. I love to lightly starch and iron my heavy cotton, vintage pillowcases. I love how this takes me back to my childhood when all bed linens were pressed. They had such a fresh scent, creating a crisp, immaculate bed to climb into and dream!

I use it on all of my crochet doilies and place mats. I use my kitchen counter and lay them on top of each other and hand shape to original size. I polish silver when I am depressed. It is a simple task that make me feel like I am doing something positive and reinforcing how fortunate I am to have it to take care of. Why do we do that? Save our best things for special occasions only. As a mom I certainly cannot leave my beautiful treasures around for little hands to destroy. But I can use one of my more elegant tea pots more often rather than the everyday kettle that's perched on the stove top now can't I.🤔❤️

I remember watching my grandmother starching her everyday tablecloths and napkins. I do it now with my own linens, and yes, it could be very therapeutic! My sister and I shared some of these duties. I remember we used to iron my Father’s handkerchiefs. I always thought he looked so smart with a crisp folded handkerchief in his breast pocket. He dressed as well as possible on our families’ limited budget. 😍🇨🇦

I’ve been telling myself to use my mothers china and silver set instead of storing it away in boxes(which they are now as I’m living in a small place and have to store the hutch I usually keep them in)….Something new to strive for in 2023! Using this old style of starching is the best. I usually use it for all linen clothes which I own a lot.AND I add for white clothes a tiny bit of indigo powder.

Seeing you use the powdered starch brings back all the memories of starching my nurse’s cap when I was in school to be an RN. I graduated in 1982, and I don’t remember wearing the cap after I graduated and started working. I went to a hospital based school, and our training was very similar to the training in the UK where we spent many hours working in the hospital.

I am reminded of my beautiful mother and grandmother who would include me as a young girl in the table settings for special occasions .My job was to help polish the silver. When we would set the table and I would see the silver shining ,the crisp napkins , tablecloths and china with the glasses sparkling .I was so proud of the beauty we created. Now my daughter and little granddaughter are following in this family tradition, where simple elegance has always been a part of setting the table, even the coffee table as well. My granddaughter has added a new tradition where she creates handmade place cards.I so enjoyed this video. So kind of you to make your friend the cookies. I like to practice Qi Gong as a way to give me a peaceful start , or end to my day. Thank you for another lovely vlog and for always sharing beauty.

We are having our first real spring days here in Canada and it's so great to wash all the curtains and polish all the wood while giving the house a good airing. I'm one of those funny people who relishes polishing the silver and doing the ironing. My silver came from my friend's mum when she died and it brings back such fond memories :)

Hello Nicolas! Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦! It is nice to have a wonderfully clean start to the year. Your neighbour, Lucy, is fortunate to have you; wrapping with your napkin was the perfect touch! In our household, my wife is blessing us by preparing meals with the "Instant Pot" that she received as a gift at Christmas. She tried a 3.5 lbs Pot Roast first, with amazing results. The starching took me back to my childhood when my mother starches anything cotton, including pillowcases and bed sheets. It was so nice to feel the smooth shiny ironed fabric against your skin. They also stay clean longer
