Great vid, John! Thanks! One thing you didn't mention that is an obvious huge advantage of using OBS as a musician is the option of applying filters to your audio sources. It's like having a whole DAW with basic plugins at your disposal. It's just nice to be able to do it inside the program if you need. I use filters to get compression, EQ, reverb and limiter, and it's all there inside OBS. I can't believe this software is free, it's so good.

This is THE best OBS tutorial -- I keep coming back to it. Question: I've set up my iPhone as a secondary camera, per your instructions, and it works fine except for one thing: The iPhone camera image that shows up on my laptop includes the button at the bottom of the phone and all the words-- "lapse" "Slo-Mo," etc.--that are below the camera image on the phone itself. How can I get rid of all that and get an image that's exclusively what the phone camera is viewing? Thanks for humoring me.
@JohnPaulMusicUK
@JohnPaulMusicUK 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill 👋 Thank you so much for the comment! Wow! Regarding the camera - have a look at this video. Broadcast quality video, wirelessly from the iphone to OBS - Unfortunately as of June its no longer free.. but its great! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4Dcl62HYth7iNU Another option is have a look at an app simply called “Shoot - Clean Camera” - about £4 and will give you a clear image when plugged in. Hope these help. 👍🏻

This was marvellous. I especially appreciated that you basically got on with it and didn't waste time waffling about irrelevant stuff before the main attraction even started! I have a question, if I may; my upload speed is terrible - max 0.5 Mbps. sometimes 0.4. As I understand it this is too slow for livestreaming. But would it help if I was able to have the video only in black and white? And if so, how can I get that? I have an iphone 6+ (and an interface and mics etc). I've got as far as installing OBS, actually the StreamLabs version. If this were to work out, I've been asked by one of my places of work to livestream to Facebook a charity gig, various tuition colleagues have been doing these and some useful ££ raised. Unfortunately, the tradition now is they happen at 7pm...
@JohnPaulMusicUK
@JohnPaulMusicUK 4 жыл бұрын
Hey 👋 so first off, the black and white idea doesn’t matter when it comes to digital streaming cause it’s still sending a certain resolution, not matter the colour. But if you want a black and white look, go to your camera on OBS and right click and add a filter. However I can let you into a little secret.. I am the same. My broadband currently Max’s out at 0.7 upload.. so I actually use my phone as a personal hotspot for my Mac!?! I know.. mental. I luckily have unlimited 4g on my iPhone so I’m using that to stream. Streamlabs is an awesome package, especially on mobile and well worth investing the time to understand it. I have JUST made a new OBS video today. Check it out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3PCXqyebLF6oZI Hope it helps 👍🏻

Hi John! Firstly thank you for such an awesome video, much needed during these wild times, like you said, especially as musicians a better quality gig is much better! I have a question, as i'm not that tech-savvy, but i was wondering, I normally do streams on my Instagram, and I have seen a couple people use irig or irig stream, however, this apple camera connector kit looks interesting too! Just trying to paint a picture of the set up in my mind. I would love to run it by you! I want to be able to plug in my dynamic, or condenser mic ( either my SHURE SM58 OR ZOOM H4N handy recorder) whilst also playing my backing tracks during the stream ( with an occasional guitar or piano playing) but my main concern, for now, is a good mix on the mic and clear BT's playing. Is there a way i can use my audio interphase ( m audio m-track 2x2 c series) to do all this, and run it through my LOGIC PRO X so that I can basically run backing tracks and also have a vocal channel allowing me to add some FX to the vocals during the stream? I hope i am making sense right now, but is there a way to run it through the laptop directly into the phone to get a good sound with the mic and backing tracks? For this would you recommend the irig set up, or the camera connecting cable kit that you have used? Thanks again! Warmest Selin
@JohnPaulMusicUK
@JohnPaulMusicUK 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Selin 👋 So.. theres a few options here but I will tell you my ideas and see what you think. Basically you have a few options but the first that springs to mind is investing in a small mixer to plug everything you want in and more importantly have control of the volumes quickly. Then plug the output of that mixer into your m-track. You can then use the mrrack with the apple usb camera adapter and into the phone. HOWEVER - since you are using an apple mac for backing tracks, then have a look at getting into OBS - you can send the backing tracks to OBS with a little plugin called Blackhole Audio for mac. Then you can use the phone wired or wirelessly as a camera into obs with the sound going through there too. Again, you would have volume control but it would be all digital. Hope this makes sense. Let me know what your thoughts are and lets talk more. 👍🏻

I copied this setup but instead of running it into a focusrite ( i dont have one and they are selling fast on ebay and amazon) I run it into my Mackie 12 channel mixer which is what I had already at home and i just needed to get adaptor cables. The USB mixer plugs in straight away into my desktop and the OBS software. So it is exactly as in a live gig.
@JohnPaulMusicUK
@JohnPaulMusicUK 3 жыл бұрын
Thats the idea I had - to not change your tech too much and have it set up as you would for a live gig and the interface (or mixer) goes out to your audience. Glad its worked. Ace. 👍🏻

Hey Paul 👋 The short answer is yes and yes! Hehe With ReStream there is an option for it in obs settings under stream. And for effects, click on the audio options (gear icon) or right click on the source and pick Filters. There tou can add a ‘filter’ which includes eq and compression but also VST plugins. 👍🏻

Thank you so much for this idea. As it turns out, I have a Peavey PV6 that is a USB mixer, but unfortunately it has no onboard effects. I needed just a barely audible tinge of it to keep the vocals from sounding too dry. Your video made me remember that I have a Fishman Performer, which I've used live extensively. Just plugged into my interface, and the sound is 1000 times better than with the USB mixer, and it still allows me to dial easily as if I were live. Thank you! Sometimes it's better to use what one already has. The mixer was sponsored by a local music shop, but now I realize I never even needed it in the first place!

Hi JP just wanted to say thx for taking the time to explain how to use this streaming tech way of life. At 72 and a retired sound tech I get many questions in Eastbourne East Sussex from local acts but none as much as now as we all stay in lockdown about their live stream being unbalanced on their live stream using just the internal mic on their ipad/iphone so it seems to be the mics used by apple are not as good as the android ones. or maybe apple have a built in gain clipping device as it appears to allow louder mic vocals and lower the backing tracks for those setting up as if live to stream a show. where by others using android devices are more balanced I have heard. Of course obtaining any cables or hardware now is not easy but as least after your brilliant video I can share it and help them all have answers so thx again

These are good ideas for people who have not done this before. One issue that some people should be made aware of and then you might notice in this video is if you are using the Apple camera connected in the way that you described and is the default way, you will notice that channel one goes to the left and channel 2 goes to the right so if you watch this video you’ll hear that his vocal is pound hard left and the guitars. Heart rate. Ideally you would want those as duel mono and mixed in the center. A good way to fix this problem is to insert a small audio mixer and mix channel 1 and channel 2 in dual mono and send the master output into the airport audio interface. Or if you have an older phone or tablet like an iPhone 6 like I still use, you can use the JK Audio iRig type of device to be able to adjust your audio input into your phone and it will also capture into your phone in a summed mono audio signal that will fix the isolated left and right channel to blend it into a dual mono centered audio experience. Just some extra thoughts.

Great video JP. I will say that you mention an advantage of Filmic Pro is that you can change the exposure and lock focus. You can do that with the native iPhone app as well. You have to touch and hold and it will lock focus wherever you are touching. To adjust the exposure, you touch and hold and then slide your finger up or down and a slider will appear beside the box and exposure will go up or down as long as your are still press-holding.
@JohnPaulMusicUK
@JohnPaulMusicUK 4 жыл бұрын
Hey 👋 Yeah that is very true and yeah i know about the exposure and also locking the AE/AF 👍🏻 But the downside is that I am mirroring the whole screen on to OBS so you’ll still see the user interface and all the on screen buttons. I use Filmic Pro to film all my footage for the KZbin channel and it’s just an added advantage. A cheaper option is an app called ‘shoot’ which can also get rid of the on screen interface.. it’s around £2.99 - apps.apple.com/gb/app/shoot-clean-camera-feed/id964565026

JohnPaul Music UK Yep the interface staying on the screen doesn’t help if you are looking for a clean feed for OBS, but it’s a tip if you are just wanting to record a video. After watching your video I did some searching and found the LiveAir Solo app. It’s free and gives a clean feed for OBS. I tested it last night and it works great. I have my phone tethered to my iMac with the lightning cable and OBS recognizes the phone as a source in Video Capture Devices. Thanks again for your hard work.

Hi again JP! (I'm sorry if this is a repeat--I thought I submitted this question on Saturday, but now am not seeing it here, so am trying again.) First off, we are SO grateful to you for your clear instructions--we are NOT tech savvy and have never before captured our sound so well, and it's all thanks to you! Your advice was spot on about powering the focusrite usb/iphone adapter with a cord plugged into the wall--I invested in a high quality wall charger and long cord by Anker, and that did the trick. We still have a glitch to work out, and are hoping you might be able to help us. When we play back our FilMic Pro video on stereo speakers (in the car or on the Macbook), we only get sound out of the left speaker. The Acoustic Image amp we are using has two channels, and we have tried using two mics (SM57/58, both trained on the piano, or one for vocals), making sure both channels are turned on, and turning up the master level; none of this has solved the mono recording issue. We also tried out a Røde condenser mic (which, by the way, we plugged directly into the focusrite, as the phantom power on the amp creates ear-splitting feedback with that mic and we are worried about damaging the equipment). We liked the sound from the Røde even better, especially for piano and vocals together, but again we just get the one-sided playback (no sound in the right speaker). (On a side-note--is there any reason we shouldn't skip the amp and just work with the condenser mic, focusrite and phone? Or is it possible to work with the condenser mic via the amp without phantom power/that terrible feedback?) I notice that there are 1/4 inch right and left output jacks on the back of the focusrite. I'm wondering if a different cable arrangement is needed from the focusrite to the phone to capture sound from both channels? Or perhaps the issue is with the amp, or the cables going into the amp (of course we are using xlr cables into the amp from our mics, and a single xlr cable out from the amp to the focusrite, as that is the only output option from the amp). We would be so grateful for any advice you can give us--we are SO CLOSE to perfect sound capture!
@JohnPaulMusicUK

Hello Beatrice. 👋 I thought I saw a notification from you pop up but then it disappeared. Weird?! 🤷‍♂️ Firstly, I would like to thank you for becoming a member of my little Caffeine Drinker club! Hehe. Means the world to me. I’m so glad that the cabling for the iPhone worked out. Now let’s get onto the audio cables. So the hint is the last paragraph you said. ‘A single xlr cable out from the amp to the focusrite’. Which means that you are only plugging into the focusrite (I’m guessing) into channel 1. When you do this on a computer, the computer figures out that is a mono input and can use it as such but when you are using a phone, the phone thinks channel 1 is Left and channel 2 is right. That’s it. There is no real way to configure it unless you are telling something like GarageBand what it is. Especially going live, there isn’t a ‘go mono’ option when it sees 2 plugs. So a couple of options for you. If your amp has only one output then yes, your suggestion on not using it would let you plug into channel number 2.. BUT.. then you’ll have the mic on channel 1 (left) and the piano on channel 2 (right). The next option would be to use a cable splitter, to get the. Sound into both channels, but again it’s a mono sound but at least it’s both left and right. You just won’t have any panning. The alternative option is then to use a mini mixer to plug the mics and instruments into that and send a ‘mixed’ signal, both left and right to the focusrite. I would do normally say look into this and you can pick up a cheap little mixer like the behringer Xenyx 502 for around £25-£30. But... 🙄 This isn’t really a problem more of a choice. In today’s market, you can get a mixer that is now USB compatible and would then be able to plug into the phone, bypassing the focusrite. For example the same mixer has a USB brother called the Xenyx Q502USB and that’s about £50. Audio interfaces are great but it’s all down to what you are doing and to be honest peoples needs have changed. If you went down that route, you could always plug that mixer into speakers if you needed to hear yourself on an amp (only if you need to). Anyways. That’s my 2 pence advice. Thoughts?

@@JohnPaulMusicUK Thank you so much for this detailed and helpful reply! (Yes, I figured it probably takes a cup of coffee to get through reading our long questions, and then another cup to answer, so joining the caffeine club was the least I could do!) @@JohnPaulMusicUK Hi again, I want to report what I've learned. This sure has been a rabbit hole! When I went to our local music supply store and asked about cable splitters, mixers and mini-mixers, the knowledgeable clerk talked through the issue with me and then came to the conclusion that the problem must lie with the app (FiLMic Pro). He mentioned that the xlr cables we are using should be transmitting stereo sound automatically, so there should not be a need to use more than one channel/input on the Focusrite, or going into the Focusrite. At that point I thought maybe a note to FiLMic Pro support could be helpful, and indeed, I think it has solved the mystery (if not our problem): according to FMPro's Russ, "the audio can only be recorded in stereo if the audio source/microphone being used to record the audio supports stereo recording. At this time we have the option of recording in stereo with the internal iPhone mics on supported iPhone versions (I believe it goes back to the iPhone XR as long as the device is using iOS14 or later) or via supported lightning-connected external mics (Shure MV88/+, Rode i-XY, and Zoom H5 are the ones we can confirm at this time). Audio is recorded in single track mono in all other cases." Our mics are a Røde NT1-A, and SM 57/58, so they won't support dual track mono recording. I think this may, sadly, mean we can't use FiLMic Pro and get dual track mono playback. Unless we get a bigger focusrite with two xlr inputs? But even then it sounds like FiLMic will just turn it into single track mono audio. This is a bummer, because we really liked all the other features of FMP (including the sound quality!). Do you think there might be any further work-arounds to this problem with FMPro, or could you recommend another recording app? Thank you for all the time and attention you've given to this! I'm hoping that my sharing all this detail may be useful to you, rather than just annoying. :)
@JohnPaulMusicUK
@JohnPaulMusicUK 3 жыл бұрын
Right. I needed to message you regarding this as there are some wires being crossed here. Let’s take a step back and look at what you have. Firstly, Filmic Pro is a dual audio recorder. I know this as I have recorded in stereo many times. Things like the Shure mv88+ and the Rode i-Xy are a single mic with two outputs which indeed record a left and a right. However, based on what you said, I was under the impression that you wanted to record two separate things, which would mean two separate mono microphones and the Rode nt1-a and shure sm57/58 are exactly that. The bit of tech you missing here is ability to plug those mics into something that will convert it into a stereo feed. This is where an audio interface with 2 inputs like the focusrite 2i2 or a usb mixer comes in. The USB mixer would be the way to go. If you use an audio interface, you will get one mic only in the left and one mic only on the right as they are mono input sources. The mixer will be able to take each mono source and balance them and then you take that feed into the Apple Camera adapter and filmic will hear bith the left and the right coming in from the mixer, both mics on both the left and the right. You can even use things like panning on the mixer to adjust it and give it a bit of audio space. Does this make sense or are you trying to achieve a different goal? I am now thinking I need to do a video on this as it seems to be something people (not just yourself) are having issues with. I hope this has helped.
