Out of curiousity. 2016 Highlander @ 90k on the clock, transmission service recommended by dealer service advisor/tech is to flush only.. not a big fan of flush personally.. leaning towards a drain and fill. Service advisor doesn't recommend drain/fill, said it is more expensive (cost doesn't matter so much as doing what is right is more important) they have to drop the pan and all the old fluid won't get fully drained.. can they change the filter at that point?? What would your preference be? Won't hold you to it, just looking for a second opinion/advice.Also should I go ahead with a differential/transfer case fill and drain along with the transmission service while I am at it? Service advisor is also suggesting brake fluid flush. I plan to do some maintenance items throughout the next year as I approach 100k. Any of your time is very much appreciated.. if Mr. Car Care was closer I would would give him whatever he wanted to charge to go over my car with a fine tooth comb.

Oh my god it's so annoying. I can't get service writers to listen to me at all. I can't even believe what really goes on. It's not even their faults, because if we tell your typical customer, non-CCN-type owners, something that is different from sales and Toyota marketing, they are going to assume we are trying to scam them.

Thank you so much! When my husband passed away I thought I should learn about my car so I would make sure it was maintained like it should be. I am so thankful I found your channel. I bought a new 2017 Lexus ES350 and was having the dealer do the maintenance based on their maintenance schedule. Now I know I should be changing the oil sooner than they recommended. When I took my car in last time I told them I wanted to change my oil every 5K/6 months. They told me I didn't need to but they would be glad to take my money. It was so maddening. We only have one Lexus dealer in my area so I feel like I have to take it to them so I have a complete maintenance record in case I decide to sell my car. It would be a good selling point. It's hard to find a good honest mechanic. I'm sure there are some but I don't want to take a chance. At least if something goes wrong and they are the only ones who did the maintenance, I'll know it was them who did it. God bless you!

All the videos I have watched from the car care nut have been very helpful in maintaining my toyota camry. When you are on a limited fix income your radiator coolant can be checked for consideration to change or not to change, or maybe even a flush. Use a fish tank PH stick for acidity level. The radiator cap being all slimed up is a good indicator for a flush. I have 120 thousand on mine and just checked it, and it all looks good and checks ok, probably will change the coolant before next summer when I can afford some good coolant.

The Transmission fluid change (except CVT transmission) is the cheapest and best investment because it is just like a regular oil changes but transmission is one of the most expensive part on the car. Don't trust Toyota manual that it did not need to be changed or it is a forever fluid.

He's telling the truth about cost of OEM transmission Fluid. I had to do a 2005 Honda Odyssey minivan. A case of Genuine Honda automatic Trans fluid cost me over $100. I did the drain, fill, drive and repeat (x2). And yes, do not use aftermarket for CVT or Automatic. $100 vs $5000, I'll pay the $100 than pay for a new Transmission. This is one you can't cut corners!!!

Regarding after market coolants, after how long do problems occur with those? I bought a used 2015 Scion at 47.000km last year and now it has about 78.000km, the dealership told me the previous owner had the coolant flushed with generic yellow “all makes and models” to replace the factory one. Thanks AMD, I’ve tried my best to follow your advice on these fluids. It’s pretty cool how much your channel has grown thanks to all of your helpful advice! Kudos! On a different note, I just had a local mechanic do a transmission, coolant, and break fluid flush. Would’ve went to the dealer but they were heaps more expensive. The mechanic said they used genuine toyota transmission fluid, but Penrite coolant rated 300-350k instead. Kind of wish I bought coolant and trans fluid from the dealer myself for the mechanic to use… What’s your opinion on this @AMD? Should I be concerned and have them redo the coolant flush with Toyota coolant? :( :|

Thank you for the great video! You've clarified confusions for me that I've bought Toyota Super Long Life coolant 3 years ago that was pink but in a red/black bottle with a yellow cap, and when I bought the same coolant this year, it has a different part# (00272 SLLC2) and label (also pink) just like the pink one you have in the video. I used this to top off the plastic tank in my 2007 Camry, and hope it is compatible with the red coolant in the car when I bought it. The manual calls for SLL coolant for this car. My car has 193,000 miles. The coolant loss is 5/8 of an inch down from the full mark for one year. The level is still on the upper side between "Full" and "Low." I've heard about SLL coolant is prone to leaks. But don't know if this is the case? I plan to have the water pump replaced next year.
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching my video! Your car definitely takes pink coolant. They did change the packaging a while back. A very minor coolant loss over a long period is not a big concern. A very good inspection will reveal the source. Water pumps and radiators are common to leak on your car.

The first generation Prius transaxles used type T-IV and have no dipstick. Even though the transaxle is very forgiving of wear, change the fluid every 50K miles. It does not burn but it picks up metal.

When changing transmission fluid do you believe in just dropping pan and changing filter or using machine for fluid flush,which I understand changes all of the fluid.🤔

Hi! I wouldn’t replace the filter as they almost never get clogged. I would either drain and fill or flushing using a machine.

I drive a 2004 Avalon. As of 08/2022 only 120k miles. Reduced driving drastically 10 years ago and still do a transmission fluid drain every three years and the oil every 3000 miles or at no longer than once a year. Even when I did "normal driving", the car handling improved with a transmission drain every three years. The family had three other Avalons of the same model and each attained at least 225000 miles. If I had owned them, I would have done more frequent oil and transmission fluid changes.

Thank you AMD again for the great helpful videos. Your response and videos made me feel comfortable in buying a used camry 2012 xle v6. I am taking careful note on how to maintain the car as I truly love this car. I have two initial questions: 1) so the car is 9-10 year old with 60K miles. the owner hardly drove it for the last 5 years and kept it in a garage (so majority of the 60K miles are driven during its first 5 years). The pink coolant looks clean but I don't think it was ever changed. Should I still change it? If so it is 2 gallons of pink coolant that I need, correct? 2) for the transmission fluid change, a drain and fill would suffice (consider that it is at the right mileage but is like 5 year late)? If so how many quarts do I need? and no need to clean the transmission pan nor change the filter? Thank you so much again!
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I would change the coolant. You’ll need 1 gallon and a bit so you’ll need 2 gallons handy and you’ll have some extra. The transmission fluid a drain and fill is sufficient, no need to drop the pan. You’ll need around 4 quarts to be on the safe side

Hi AMD, I have a question about transmission fluid. I was just reading TSB 006-11, and it says a number of things, but I have a question about this: Containers storing Toyota ATF-WS should ALWAYS be sealed - If exposed to the atmosphere, ATF-WS may absorb moisture and potentially cause shift concerns if used in operation. Use only new, clean ATF-WS when refilling the transmission. This is some strong language, but they don't say only use WS-ATF from unopened containers (like brake fluid does). In the past I have kept ATF indefinitely until I need it. Do you have a feel for how long I can store it after opening and re-sealing a bottle? Thanks!!
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Honestly I wouldn’t use open containers after max of 6 months

To me that sounds like WS isn't a life time fluid. It is my understanding that transmissions vent to atmosphere.

Hey AMD, question for you: I have a 2011 Camry I4 with 155k on it and the trans is shifting weird sometimes (delayed or harsh). I dont believe it has ever had the fluid changed, would changing it at this mileage be advisable or just make it worse? Would it also be worth dropping the pan and replacing the filter/clean magnets while I'm at it? Thanks!

My wifel loves her 1999 RX300 we bought used in 2008 with 120k and now has 380k and still runs perfect. I do all my own repair and service so the car has been well maintained. These first gen RX's were equiped with the Toyota U140E and U140F 4 speed transmission used in the same years Rav4 in this case AWD = U140F. The Toyota transmission fluid for this older models is Toyota Type T-IV JWS 3309 spec mineral based which in the US is made by Mobil for Toyota. You might already know this but these early first gen RX's 4 speed transmissions was prone to early failures as soon a 40k. I've been using MaxLife Synthetic Multi vehicle due to it meeting Toyota Type T-IV JWS 3309 spec for eleven years now with 30k drain-refill and 60k filter and it still shifts perfect.

I asked for an ATF drain & refill service for my 2015 Sienna (it had 58K miles) but the service advisor couldn't find that itemized service. Then, he suggested 60K miles service and good thing I asked if ATF was included in that so he checked and nope! So, what's the point of suggesting the 60K service?😅 He then checked with 90K service and it wasn't there either. I'm just sharing my honest experience, I truly believe what you said, AMD - ATF needs to be serviced. However, my local toyota dealership couldn't do it for me. The advisor then came back with an explanation that because it has no dipstick, there is no need for service....unbelievable.

I know you probably were not thinking about the ancient Toyotas when you were making this video, but there is another type of automatic transmission fluid that Toyota sells (Part Number 00718-ATF00) that replaces Dexron II and Dexron III that is no longer available (as true, licensed Dexron II or III). This transmission fluid is used in many Toyotas in the 1980s and 1990s as both transmission fluid and power steering fluid. This transmission fluid is not the same as Type T-IV.

Don't use Type IV fluid if your transmission needs Dexron III. My 1999 Toyota use Dexron 3 or Dexron 4 is backward compatible.

Thanks for the informative videos. I have a 2012 Corolla LE and have been doing trans drain and fills every 30k at the dealer. It uses the WS fluid and I know you suggest changing it every 60k. My dealership does the coolant and trans fluid change at 30k, 60k, 90k intervals as part of the major service and it's all included for $400. Am I overdoing the coolant and trans changes or do you recommend continuing to do it this way? I really need this car to last me 330k.
