Johnson Controls makes most of the batteries , one important thing to check when buying a new battery is how long it sat on the shelf before you bought it ,if it is older than 3 months tell them you want a newer one or go someplace else as lead acid batteries age faster unused on the shelf than when in use ,if it sat for longer it will still work fine but will not last nearly as long as one that has a newer date code. With the date code the first number is the month then the year but sometimes they use a letter instead of a number with A for January to L for December and it is on the side of the battery not the sticker sometimes on the top where they mark off when you got it.

I love the “glazed” line! I’m pretty sure every serpentine belt that runs it’s back side over an idler or tensioner (which would be all of them) has that shiny (glazed) look. I love to sit in the waiting room and listen to dealership service writers come out and sell people insanely unnecessary and expensive repairs. I was at the Honda dealership for the airbag recall on my wife’s CRV and an older retired couple with a two year old Honda minivan was sold a $1500 brake job with new rotors all the way around an new calipers. I really wanted to jump up and yell bull**** but I stayed out of it because I hadn’t seen the vehicle but it is pretty unlikely that type of customer could have driven that thing enough to need that much work in such a short time.

As is so often the case for so many once you realize/learn that most Toyota Dealerships are absolutely horrific ripoffs and Liars. When I bought my brand new 06 Tundra DC Ltd 09/2005, I had already experienced their unsavory ways from my previous Lemon 2002 Ltd. The new one wasn't a total lemon but over the 1st few years I learned it also was built with much inferiority. But doing my own maintenance and larger repairs at least assured me I was not getting ripped off and the jobs were done right. First of all, your channel is a Godsend! I just discovered it and wish I had subscribed much sooner! I just bought a 2014 Avalon Hybrid after falling in love with the Toyota hybrid system on my wife’s 2009 Highlander Hybrid. Both cars are high miles (over 200k on the Highlander and 160k on the Avalon). I’m doing most of my own maintenance and the Highlander has been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned so far. My 04 Acura TL that just got traded for the Avalon paled in comparison. I just finished this 5 part series and found it so helpful in putting together a maintenance plan for both cars! One suggestion I had would be a video on timing belt service. I know that’s not as DIY as some other things but it’s something I think a lot of people aren’t aware of as a maintenance item in V6 engines. Thanks for all the work you put into these videos, you’ve earned a subscriber for life here!

My 2022 Tundra 1794 has Bridgestones. So far so good. Not every brand makes great tires across the spectrum. Know what you want from a set of tires and shop accordingly. As was said Tire Rack allows you to do this and is a great starting point. Many local shops will price match Tire Rack prices which is great as it allows you to patronize your local business.

I agree with your recommendation on the "Italian tune up" as it has worked for me as well. I also agree that most fuel additives do little if nothing with one exception. I have experienced good results from a product from amsoil called P.I. (performance improver). I used to have a vehicle that suffered from carbonization issues a couple of times a year. The amsoill product was the only one that would eliminate the pinging.

When considering how long to keep your battery and serpentine belt, I always factor in the typical cost of a tow, the likelihood that you're going to get stranded somewhere, and other inconvenience costs. When you add all that up, it usually makes sense to replace your battery and serpentine belt before the end of their useful life. A lot of people think I'm crazy for replacing stuff that isn't broke, but there is a lot to be said for scheduling stuff like this when it is convenient to you, and you're not in an emergency situation where you have little choice. Some of those pro-rated battery guarantees aren't as good as they seem, so you need to factor that into your decision as to when to replace an old battery. Some places will give you the pro-rated refund with no questions asked, while others are required to put it on their charging/discharging test system to make sure the problem isn't with your alternator. That can be rather inconvenient in an emergency situation. Another problem with pro-rated battery refunds, is that some places will indeed give you what you're owed, but only toward the cost of one of their new batteries, and they'll only warranty the new battery for as long as the remaining warranty on your old battery. For example, suppose your 3 year pro-rated battery that cost you $150 dies after 2 and a half years. So after running a full charge/discharge test, the seller gives you $25 credit to buy a new battery. No big surprise there, and on the surface it seems like you should take the offer. But if that new battery dies after six months, depending on the store policy, you could be left with no warranty whatsoever on your (almost) NEW six month old replacement battery. That kind of thing doesn't happen often, but when it does, a lot of customers get furious.

Or buy a car without any belts… 👍👍
@williamfrench9973 Жыл бұрын
I 100% agree with you. I always replace my battery at or slightly before the warranty period is up. A single tow can easily cost more than the battery. Same with drive belts. I go one step further… at 10ish years (yes, I keep my cars a long time) I replace every belt and clamp in the cooling system, along with the thermostat and, depending upon the model maybe even the water pump. I drive my car for work and I simply cannot afford break-downs so I follow the model of airplane maintenance. Since I do the work myself, I can get all the parts for that for ~200-300$ including fluids. Money well spent in my book.

The "in-tank additive" is made by 3M and is literally just gasoline with a tiny bit of extra detergent. Totally worthless. However, the pressurized "fuel injector cleaner" absolutely works as it was formulated and patented by Toyota for Toyota. I recommend it as a diy job. The cans are cheap but the fuel rail kit is expensive but it's a one time expense. Batteries are supplied by interstate but manufactured by Johnson Controls. They make 80% of all lead acid batteries. However, the batteries are made to the manufacture's specs. In the case of Toyota, JC uses the same external case and bus bars as all the other batteries, however, JC uses Toyota's patented lead plate design that gives slightly higher reliability and real CCAs.

I can’t speak for dealership batteries. I have somewhat unique experience. I grew up working in a motorcycle shop, I’ve worked in a few independent automotive shops and I’ve hauled dead/recycled batteries for Johnson Controls. Anyway, aftermarket batteries arrive at the retailers not fully charged! The batteries are filled with electrolyte at the factory and that’s it. The chemical reaction is the only state of charge. I typically recommend that you put a new battery on a trickle charge overnight before install. We’ve seen fantastic lifespan out of the cheapest batteries. I’m also a fan of some fuel treatments if you’re buying a used vehicle with uncertain maintenance history or was parked for long periods. For instance, I bought my ‘06 Scion xB earlier this year and it’s currently at 77.5k on the odometer. Dealership maintained up in Portland Oregon. But that’s still a LOT of sitting in a damp climate.

Just replaced the original belt on my son's 2009 corolla xrs 2.4 liter. It wasn't cracked but just worn and stretched a bit. We also just benched tested the original alternator from Denso japan. Bearing is tight and not dry either. We had the catalytic converter and AF/R replaced about 4.5 years ago do to engine burning oil and ruined them. I bought the car new and its been maintained by me for everything. Still running strong.

Awesome video as usual! I wish I would of seen your videos earlier I bought a 21 Tacoma 4x4 in September and just recently had my first oil change at 9.3 k miles I wish I would of done it at 5k but from now on I will do at 15k dealer at 20.... me at 25 and so on thank you for all your invaluable information! Please do some videos on diy differential and transfer case maintenance videos! I was a mechanic in a high volume family run business open since 72 specializing in driveability issues, fuel injection I was married to the owners daughter and worked there for13 yrs then we divorced and Then started working on Turbine engines offshore, so I am technically inclined but changing the transmission fluid seems very complicated so I will leave that to the dealer, unless you can convince me that it is straight forward! Thank you for what you do! Praying for you too! You have a home in Katy Tx, If you ever come south!

Hey love your channel and your experienced advice, I've learned a good amount. I got to see a tour of a battery factory and learned this: Yes many automotive batteries may be made at the same factory but to very different specifications and levels of quality! According to the brand's specifications there are good ones and not so good. So for example, a Walmart "Ever Start" battery is a much lower quality than a Interstate, Delco or Motorcraft . There are many others with levels of quality.

If I remember correctly, most automotive batteries are made by Johnson Controls.

The good thing is that I found your videos, subscribed and watched your videos and the fact is that I don't trust the Toyota dealerships service Dept. that I went to for all the maintenance services done on my 2007 Prius. My ABS fails when I purchased the car way back in 2013 and mentioned to the dealership but nothing done and still having problem with the ABS. Thanks for making the videos available to us.

Excellent Series of videos Sir. My wife and I watch these together. She learned a lot about taking care of her new car even before it arrived at the dealership. May the Lord bless and keep you as well AMD.

I am from the Philippines and i can honestly say that your advises are far far better than what any toyota service advisors have told me. And i have heard a lot of rubbish advises from dealerships. I am 72 yrs old and a DIY person.
