WBT silver solder is actually great stuff , and not mostly silver either. It has a lower melting point and flows easily so you don't lift the traces / pads off of the board. Excellent solder! It's not Snake Oil. Try some, you'll see why it's better. Dunno if it makes an audible difference thou. Probably not, but it's easy to work with.

I've been an audio geek for the best part of 20 year, I have also worked in Hifi retail in a past life. During that time I have used lots of RCA Interconnects, all different price points and quality. My current Hifi is UK kit. Ruark Templar 2 speakers, Cyrus 7 Amp with an Arcam DV135 CD SACD player. Currently I use Chord, Audioquest and Van den hul Interconnects all over £100So I see this youtube vid and laugh. Well i'm not laughing anymore. I made the cable in the vid for around £28, after a few hours running in a gave it a good listen. In my setup it works extremely well, so well in fact I will be making a second pair soon. Thanks for the video :)

I deal with expensive hifi too and have heard from the likes of QED Reference and Chord Signature interconnects and speaker cables etc. Imo, at least in terms of technical performance and transparency, my Mitsubishi Eska Fibre optical, Custom Canare RCA and Canare 4S8 sound vastly better than any of the boutique cables I've heard. But then again, my preferred sound is neutral (not bright or warm) and accurate so it's not for everyone.

Since I saw your video, I tried it out and I must say I am amazed about the balanced sound. I did my whole system with this cable and several other setups of friends. Everyone was amazed about the quality vs price. Unbeatable for its price. I am now also trying this cable as a loudspeaker cable dispite the low diameter. Several friends have heared that cable here in my setup and were shocked about the sound improvement.

A little feedback from my experience testimony, I wanted to work in a cable factory in Switzerland and had an in dept sighseeing tour. The place where those cables are made is gigantic and you can clearly see it from space. You need heavy machinery and a susbstancial amount of employees to make cables, to transport and sell them. At the other side, lots and lots of those cable gods didn't have the machinery at all. Generally, they just sell rebranded and new decorated cables bought from China or eastern Europe. So, find their source and buy your cables there.

An interesting video as I used to work for a high end fibre optic cable manufacturer. The parts to make 2 X 0.5m interconnects are about £19. The Van Damme cable is £6 per metre and the 4 locking RCA connectors are £12.95 and you can get both on eBay. Following on from this video I bought the parts to make a pair of these for myself and they really do look and feel great. In terms of sound quality they do the job very well. I mean cables and interconnects make subtle differences at best so I wouldn't obsess over it too much but I am certain that if this cable had "Audioquest" written on it it would sell all day long for £100+. For £19 I'd be surprised if you can get hold of a better made cable.

@@MrAzcabowabo A decent $10 should sound the same though. The internals of your audio equipment arn't using this ridiculous oxygen-free electron-controlling wiring. Neither is highly sensitive scientific or medical equipment that is far more susceptible to signal loss or changes in voltage. Hell, our eyes are far more sensitive than our ears yet my TV can deliver perfect 4K HDR with $5 HDMI cable. The only improvements a more expensive cable can provide are: Less likely to break, less likely for the metal ends to corrode (if gold plated), better EMF shielding. Sound quality ain't one of 'em.

So many things affect the sound of a system. Reflections in a room is a huge problem. My best room for listening is a very small bedroom with 4 Paradigm Mini Monitors in it. Room has lots of padded surfaces...clothing, bedding..and it I get that punch from the audio that I like to get from being in a Luxury car with leather seats. I did an experiment in my living room, placing two wood panels on a stand directly behind my head, each at a 45 degree angle, which aimed the sound in the room into my ears. I adjusted my head distance to them, and found I got a very three dimensional quality from this simple setup. An old dictionary stand with walnut boards that are adjustable got me into this experiment.

I was a cable sceptic. I had some $75 interconnects which I though we're a safe bet. Not dirt cheap, but not ridiculous. I then made some pure silver interconnects and could not believe the difference. I then got 5 different people to compare them on 2 different systems (without telling them which cables were being used) and they all picked the difference straight away. It sounded brighter, the sound stage felt closer and just nicer overall. The original cables almost sounded muffled compared. Would be interesting to make some of these silver plated copper ones to compare.

I have made many cables on my own, and have found that coax designs (like the one in the video) sound poor because the electrons flow through the center conductor going one way and through the braid (or foil) in the other way. This imbalances the signal (the electroncs flow through two different kinds of conductors), leading to sound-quality loss. You need a cable where you have two, identical conductors for + and -, and a shield that is electrically connected to ground only at one end to prevent group loops and also to prevent the same, imbalanced wire path as mentioned above. Also, as eveyone probably knows, cable length matters. I have built many different kinds of mic cables and as length increases, the information you lose most is the 3D imaging info. The sound becomes more flat and 2D.

All good but you forgot twisted pair... the twisting causes any inductance noise to cancel out.
@BearistaBear
@BearistaBear 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, a twisted pair has the same kind of wire for both the + and -. But a coax has the solid copper conductor for the + and the shielding conductor (made up of something else) for the -. The difference in sound quality is very pronounced with phono cable for record players, because the signal is so low in amplitude.

Lo capacitance. Fantastic. What about inductance? If you change the capacitance without changing the inductance you are actually worse off. There is a balance between capacitance and inductance that factors together to make the impedance or "Z." Some might say that small changes in impedance do not matter because the output impedance of their source is low, and the input impedance of their amplifier (or next stage in the signal path) is high. My answer to that would be "if that's your position, then how does a change in capacitance, hence impedance, change the sound for the better?" If they know something about coaxial cables, then they might answer that "it's not just the overall impedance, but the amount of capacitance which can affect the signal." I would then reply that if one in concerned with capacitance apart from impedance, then would one not also be concerned with inductance? If you change one without the other, you are changing the the frequency response of the cable. If you make enough of a change, your cables effectively become filters in certain frequency ranges. It's just marketing BS designed to convince you to pay big bucks for their product. Some things DO matter in cables, but very few people here listen to the kind of music that would expose these slight differences. Of those that do, they also would have to have speakers capable of the extreme accuracy needed to hear the differences. MUCH more could be said. Oh, and as for the cables making the ground before making the signal... Why on earth would you be mucking about with cables with the power on? There is NO reason, and doing so increases the chance of something really expensive happening.

Silver oxidizes, gold does not... So gold should be better but is significantly more expensive. Silver needs a vacuum seal so that no air comes into contact with it. Supra/Jenving has low cost cables which are silverplated, but unless bought terminated with vacuum clip seal they will need cleaning from time to time just as copper wires. Still goldplated terminals gets dirty too and some of them are probably fake or not pure enough to not oxidize. Nordost has a great product which cost like a videogame per bottle that cleans oxide, dirt, electrostatic & -magnetic fields right of a terminal, cable, wire and/or chassi. I'd say there is bigger difference in soundquality btw different copper purity levels, insulation and design between two copper cables with huge price difference than (any) copper cable vs (any) silver cable, but I guess you have to take into account the method of termination of any cable too.

+Mark Miretskiy Neutrik makes good pro grade connectors, but they aren't audiophile grade. True WBT and Cardas connectors are at a completely different level than Neutrik - there is a real difference, though if you aren't using premium cable and good quality equipment as well, the difference would be lost.

+PDX Girl "true audiophile grade" Is there an entity somewhere that established that title and published specifications? "the difference would be lost" What difference would that be? Some quantity of an electrical property measurable with test equipment? Because if you can't measure it it does not exist. And these quantities do not take a large amount of money to be met. Any of the cables mentioned can be placed in an A/B blind test and it is doubtful anyone could detect which is which. The word "audiophile" is pretty much a joke amongst electrical engineers. It translates to pompous suckers easily parted with their money and who gladly perpetuate myths and fiction for the sake of consumer purchase selection confirmation bias. Yes there are differences in cable and wire. Resistance, capacitance and inductance all cause interactions with the signal as it goes through the amplifier and to the speakers. These properties will cause the user to adjust the equipment to compensate then later convince himself it sounds better, and maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't. Look up Roger Russell on the internet. He was one of Macintosh's top engineers for decades. He has a website that has some of his published work on cables and reveals the fraudulent nature of the industry.

+FuckGoogle+ The term audiophile is certainly subjective. To me, it simply means making your system sound as good as possible using quality components. If I design a circuit intended to be "audiophile grade", I'll be using the best parts I can find, as compared to maybe "studio grade", which is not going to be using the very best parts available. I do not buy into hyperbole and marketing, I focus on what sounds best using sound principles. An audiophile cable, to my definition, will have high purity copper, better shielding, etc. it need not be very expensive, and provides easily provable improvements over cheap OEM cables that may not even have 100% shielding.

+FuckGoogle+ And by the way it is measurable in terms of interference rejection, whether or not there is high frequency loss, resistance loss, etc if we're talking cables. And sometimes it's just about having something that's precision made that feels solid in your hand - many people care about that, too.

I diagree .I was using £120 ($150) Chord Company cables and made them redundant for these Van Dammes that I paid £34 ($43) for from a small independent cable maker.. a cable that costs $30 to make is not the same as a cable that has a retail price of $30. If your Audioquest cost $30 to buy they probably cost $5 to manafacture if that. There is an independent hifi retailer here in the UK selling these Van Dammes at £135 ($170).

Why would I want to roll off treble, can anyone provide an in depth answer to this? These are guitar cables specifically designed to reduce treble roll off. The entire point of high end audio is to reproduce recordings as accurately as possible. Unfortunately, that means you get the good and the bad. I have had some recordings hat were just downright awful and I could not even tolerate to listen to them. My point is I would not want to affect the recording. I'm genuinely asking this question my knowledge is limited and my personal preference for myself is to have crystal clear highs(treble) of course that is subjective were someone else may feel that is to much and others have told me it was just right. This is why i personally have a penchant for b&w diamonds, b&w Maserati edition as well as klipsch. Original la scales without adding a subwoofer. I have had the absolute best staging from my la scalas than anything else I own. Trust me i have amassed a hugeeeee collection. I know what I like to hear. However, I am attempting to learn more about the technicalities behind the scenes. So all. Information on my question would be greatly appreciated. However, if we can limit responses to just the facts and not personal opinions. Thank you I just purchased a specialized audiophile soldering iron for $1800 just for this project. Anyone else have a audiophile soldering iron? Lol.
