You can use a thin sewing needle stuck in a cork so you don't get poked, or even a toothpick will do. You'll just get a larger eye in the middle of your coil.

I usually recommend Quilled Creations paper as a beginner because their paper is a little heavier than other brands and that can make it a little easier to get even coils. Enjoy your quilling and don’t hesitate to reach out with any other questions 🙂
