Jay, thanks for the design. I am using 4" sewer and drain pipe and 4" flex hose. The sewer and drain pipe and flex hose have the same O.D so you can use a S&D coupling on both sides of the blast gate. And if you have Schedule 40 fittings in your main piping, a 4" S&D coupling will fit into the Sch 40 fitting.

Your design has rave comments from other KZbinrs. I made 4 of them, they work great. One tip about gluing PVC on plywood - I roughened the end and the rims, put glue on the rims before I placed on plywood. That way, it improves the seal, squeezing the glue at the edge and no need to smear it, looks neater too. Thanks for posting the video.

I took Jay Bates blast gate idea and modified it a bit. I made a 6 opening plenum that I attached to my shop vacuum. Now I can attach individual vacuum lines to my: drill press, table saw, band saw, miter saw, workbench, and router. At the plenum there is one blast gate that services three lines plus cutting off all three lines. There are three individual gates also that control flow. The plenum is made of 3/4" birch ply about 5" x 5" x 10".

Cool trick to give shape to any sticky glue or adhesive I've learned form an old boss, is to cut an apple with the shape that you need, eg. (if you are putting silicone in an 90 angle just cut the apple in that angle and slice it through the surface, and the same process if you need a curve). Hope it works for future projects... Thanks for all your videos! You rock mate!

Jay, thank you for the best way to construct the gate. I’ve been killing myself with the plastic gates from Rockler. They get loaded with dust and finally don’t close at all due to the backup of sawdust. Blast gateau have to have a way to push the sawdust out. Good job buddy! Best regards, Richard

Good idea about the flapper of painter's tape over the "open" end. I made my gates without that and they tend to clog--especially the planer connection.

Nice design there one to remember. A handy tip for when working with silicon which I am guessing is what your construction adhesive is made from? If you have a small pot of water to hand and dip your finger in it prevents the silicon sticking to your finger but still bods to the surfaces.
@rochat10 жыл бұрын
Most of the construction adhesive is polyurethane based and I'm not sure the wet finger trick works the same as it does with silicone.
@amdusiasdark10 жыл бұрын
Water with a drop of dishsoap, and to scrap of the remeander of the glue/ silicone use a Magnum icestick, its has a larger radius so u leave enough glue / silicone . its give it a much better finish .
@JayBates10 жыл бұрын
feygan Rochat is right. This is a polyurethane based adhesive. Normally I use a much slower setting adhesive and it smooths out just like caulk. I used F-26 here and it sets up much faster than I had anticipated.
@lloydsponenburgh72495 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It's too simple. I have a need to use sch-40 couplings on both sides, but that doesn't change the design. Good job!
@caskwith10 жыл бұрын
How do you secure the 4" felx hose on the inside of the fittings? I also use flex hose but mine fit over the blast gates and are secured with hose clamps.
@JayBates10 жыл бұрын
caskwith All pvc fittings are tapered on the inside. Just push it in until it gets stuck. I've never used any clamps on my setup and I see no areas of dust build up or escaping.
@caskwith10 жыл бұрын
Ahh ok, I don't use PVC fittings at the moment as I don't have a permanent setup. Thanks for the info, that will come in handy when I finally do get to do a more permanent install.
@Shopbuilt10 жыл бұрын
A neat trick for this is to take a piece of your 4" pipe and cut a section out of 11/16" long and this will let you fit it into the inside of another piece of pipe. Now this will allow you to put your hose over the reduced diameter and use a hose clamp.
@dcollins23718 жыл бұрын
do you glue the sections of pvc together?
@starforged10 жыл бұрын
Have you had a problem with static electricity? A ground wire or a little moisture will help. It's very dry where I live and the ground strap wrapped around the pipe and grounded stops the shock.

I am confused about inserting flexible hose inside the coupling. How do you attach it? With duct tape?
@JayBates7 жыл бұрын
It's a snug fit inside. Friction fit.
@krtwood10 жыл бұрын
I like to make the gate twice as long and have a stop at both ends. You cut a circle through it with it at one end so that when it's open there's no open slot to get filled up. The only problem is it makes it a little harder to position the gates so that they don't hit anything at either position.
@krtwood10 жыл бұрын
your home workshop When it's closed you can see the hole in the "open" part sticking out so you can tell whether it's open or not. I try to orient them all the same way so I can just tell at a glance that the one (or two) sticking out a certain way is the one I forgot to close.
@JayBates10 жыл бұрын
krtwood Sounds like more work than what's necessary. I've been using this style for a while now with no issues. That being said, there's probably a lot of stuff I do that seems like more work than what's necessary. We all work and build things differently though. Lots of options here. Thanks for watching.
@krtwood10 жыл бұрын
Jay Bates I just cut the hole through all three pieces at once after it's put together, but I handle the connection to the pipes and hoses a little differently. A way you'd definitely see as more work :) i just cnc those parts though. I like the trick of the tape flap though, I will keep that in mind if I need a gate in a tight spot. Either way is 100% better than those plastic gates that leak like crazy and get jammed up in 10 minutes.
@JayBates10 жыл бұрын
krtwood So true. I ended up chopping all of my plastic blast gates in half to make dust collection hose ports for homemade stuff.

@dclamby9 жыл бұрын
Is there a reason why you didn't just scribe the OUTSIDE of the pvc pipes and cut the hole out? That way, the pipe would fit down inside of the plywood and could probably get a better glue up..... Just wondering if that would be stronger or is there a reason not to...
@alphonsbretagne84689 жыл бұрын
+dclamby I wonder about that too.
@TheFalconJetDriver7 жыл бұрын
I will touch on that question! How many DIY folks can cut a perfect circle with a jig saw? I can't doing it this way If you have a top bearing flush trim bit you can clean up the hole pretty good using the inside radius of the pipe as a guide. However if you don't own a flush trim bit the manufactures would be happy to sell you one. I doubt Jay is pushing flush trim bits in this video, I have seen other videos on KZbin to make you want to buy another tool just to complete the task. Not here thou! Jay introduces new ways to complete task and shares what he has learned with us. Go Jay. Lane

Wouldn't using 2-part epoxy have been better to use, it bonds with everything and would have looked much cleaner... Also cutting the hole where the pipe went inside it would hold much better, because not only would the epoxy be holding it, but also the tightness of the fit would too.. Not trying to critic you, just how I see it..
