How long does it take to clean up all the white Styrofoam shavings? I imagine it's the kind of thing that never fully goes away.
@IsaacAlexanderDIY2 жыл бұрын
The cleanup wasn’t difficult, just tedious. It helps when you’re working in an environment where you have tarp or physical barrier that creates a “pool” for all the shavings. To make it easier, I used a shop vac with a wide attachment to pick up the smaller pieces which greatly aided in the cleanup process. The larger pieces were reused for several other Halloween projects that will drop in the coming weeks.

WOW Another outstanding project. You really are an artist and a craftsman. I've learned a lot from you. I do have a silly question-in your carving, did you ever reach the interior foam blocks? I wonder if a hollow cube would work-just make each of the six faces and stick them together or use a larger cardboard box as the center to stick the foam blocks to. If it worked you could get away with fewer blocks, one would just have to be careful in the carving. Or, deliberately carve the features deep so it did go through and light the interior. If it was planned ahead the interior could be painted before the faces were assembled and would only need a little touch-up. You just gave me a great idea-I'm going to make a hollow box of the 2" foam sheets and use Great Stuff to build out the pumpkin since I don't have blocks available to me.
@IsaacAlexanderDIY2 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane, this is actually an amazing idea that you have given me. Originally, I did not hollow out the center because it would’ve been too much carving and so much mess. But making a box from 1 inch or 2 inch insulation foam board would be perfect to save blocks and allow one to have a hollow interior ! I might actually do this next year, so thank you for this.

Sorry for my delayed response. Yes these Styrofoam blocks are used as cushion for tractors and trailers and oversized heavy items that need to be transported. @@IsaacAlexanderDIY Well i'm a disabled veteran and i worked for DARPA for 24 yrs. Three of us called any business in 3 states that received deliveries that are truck related, plus every tractor supply in 3 states. There are some on facebook with 3 hours of me they want 400 for 50, way above my pay scale for the holidays. It happens, i still have built many things of yours, and my lighted pvc Christmas yard drew people with cameras, i did 6 sizes and 5 of each size, and lots of different whole and multiple colors. Did you ever consider putting LED strips in the eyes, nose, and mouth and covering them with shaped frosted plexiglass to distribute the light? You could carve out a groove inside the perimeter of those cavities for the LEDs to be nestled in and hidden from immediate view as well as to avoid hotspots from where you see the light from the LEDs concentrated and a hole in the foam to wire them through instead of using the spotlight.

@@IsaacAlexanderDIY A few ideas I had were flickering amber LED strips/ropes to emulate the flames or the color changing ones for more variety (the one with the remote control, make sure you don't hide the IR receiver). And possibly paint the carved cavities with reflective paint to maximize the light output since black would dull some of that illumination. If you do this, I would be really excited to see this. Once I get my own place, I plan to use your tutorial and do this. Thanks for the confidence and something to look forward to.

Another idea you might like...I use solar flicker lights I got from Family Dollar. I use them in my lanterns to save on batteries. And they're just as bright. Put them anywhere where there is sunlight to charge up during the day. I replaced the stock batteries with ones built for solar lights from Menards. Higher capacity so they last awhile through the night. Because I only use them one month out of the year, they last awhile.
