Finished a 3 meter pair today. A lot of TPFE tape had to be used 😀 And it takes a lot of effort to build the cables. But the result seems to be very good. Thank you Ian!

A couple of things...this is by far the most detailed and labor intensive "how to" I have seen. There are some great considerations and take-aways, and I thank you for it. I would add that in my experience you need a bit more room at the ends to account for different amps and speakers.

Good work and quite inspirational. There are a lot of cables with intersting conductors that unfortunately use PVC sheathing. Your method opens up a lot of options.

3 weeks later and one 3 meter cable is ready, finished it today 😁 I didn’t do the earthing part though. It really is a time consuming job I should tell you 😁 And a lot of PTFE tape is required (ordered 10 rolls initially but had to order another 20 rolls more, hope they will be sufficient for the second cable 😁).

Brilliant! Only one concern is that fingerprint oil can destroy a brake rotor or a clutch disc, would suggest more care when twisting the bare copper wire! Personally, I think crimping would be better alternative to soldering.

HI, great video Ian. On the copper braid, you said we should probably go with silver tinned copper braid instead of just copper braid. Is there a difference in using one over the other? Thanks for the informative video. Looking forward to others.

So you have made a capacitive speaker cable ? The center conductors teflon and copper shield = coax ? That has capacitance inductance resistance ? Wonder what the actuall impedance of the cables is terminated at 4 and 8ohms ? Were you having interfearance problems with your speaker wires ? When using small diameter solder for larger jobs take as many lengths as needed twisted, allows you to get flow and get out quickly..

I am wondering if this cable will help to stop a light hum currently coming through the speakers. I am using a rega P3 turntable with ortofon black cart to a rega alex- r amp ?

Very useful, thank you! One noob question about the ground plug... Although I prefer to craft myself as much as possible (the deciding factor being the limits of my skills and tools: if I'm able to keep at least on par with quality), I'm not really versed into Hi-Fi electronics: it's the first time I see a ground plug on speaker cables. Since many amp don't offer a ground plug, if not for a phono input, what's its use, is it generally better, and how do you plug it if there's no ground post for speakers (via crocodile clamps on the amp's enclosure?)?

Absolutely nothing but help with static but that is done with the ground wire. Besides making it difficult to do or mabey making the brade look more rounded, hell I don't know man. This guy needs to be told he can buy this type of ofc speaker wire online for a relatively affordable price and you/he won't spend 4-6 hours making 1 yard of speaker wire. It does look pretty good and I'm sure it works well. Waste of time in my opinion.

@tweakerman
@tweakerman 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, so first of all, I don't measure cables, I make loads of them & listen to them, I have boxes full of cable that don't make the grade. By replacing the pvc insulation for Teflon, it immediately opens the sound up, the sound stage improves, also timing improves aswell as detail. By adding the copper braid it lowers the noise floor, I hope this is helpful, thanks for commenting & watching.

@@tweakerman I've heard all those subjective adjitives over and over. Its all anacdotal but 99% of pretentious audio products are. I've seen several high end cables measured by qualified engineers with proper equipment. They've all failed to create any audible difference. The slight measurable differences "audiophile" cables make aren't really audible. I've also had a hand full of these cables and they've never made any decernable difference that could pass a blind test. Telling people what the cable is going to do and sould like completely contaminates any credibility because it creates bias and placebo effect. Just cause you think you can hear it with your ears doesn't mean anything especially if you beleive your own hype. Human hearing and its relationship with the brain is easily manipulated and tricked its not reliable. Measurements, science, and math is. The days of subjective audio are shrinking and an era of technology and objective audio is taking over.

@@iowaudioreviews buying expensive audiophile cable is utterly ridiculous, your right on that one, cables overall can make a step up in sound quality, especially, 10% Silver cladded copper & pure Silver, but they don't have to cost losts of money to create when you make them yourself, that's why I set this channel up. I used to run an audio accessories business where I made cables and sold other companies cables, I know the amount of profits that are made in cables and it's ridiculous. All my design are as good as any ridiculously priced cables & you can make them for peanuts. I always get the bell wire brigade on my channel dissing what I'm doing, but actually I'm saving people loads of money by creating very hi-end cables for peanuts, I have 30 years experience of making high-end cables. Thanks again for commenting👍

@@jimsregaturntableshifijukebox it's physics. anybody that promotes the directionality of electricity in a speaker cable (ie by making a video espousing this) needs to justify this outlandish assertion. Van Damme cables, the purveyors of this snake oil should be questioned by anyone that purchases their product. In other words, Ian would already know this answer because as an educated customer he would have asked them, otherwise he'd be doing his subscribers a disservice by promoting this without any backing info. I mean if you're going to make a statement on a product to your supporters, at the bare minimum, you should at least be able to answer a question about the product. "take it up with Van Damme"...pfft. really? Not my job, or the job of any of the viewers of this video. that's the responsibility of the video creator.

The PVc insulation has a dielectric constant of 3.9, teflon installation has a dielectric constant of 2. If you don't understand what this means, it means with the teflon is touching the conductor less than the pvc does, so improving the sound, pvc insulation is the poorest of insulators, they use it because its cheap, thanks for commenting & watching 👍

Higher quality materials will also rarely make a big difference-you could even use a coathanger as a speaker wire in a pinch. Using gold and palladium for their high conductivity ratings sounds nice, but you’re not getting double the cable quality for double the price: you’re just paying extra money for a luxury of debatable merit. So when someone tries to sell you ridiculously priced cables, be sure to laugh in their face. Your money would be much better spent on more useful things Really, the biggest thing you should worry about is whether or not your cables are properly shielded. However, that’s another problem that’s extremely rare nowadays, and unless you’re buying some no-name penny-cable from a bin somewhere, you won’t need to worry about it. If you are having interference issues, you can try moving your cables away from common sources of electromagnetic (EM) interference, such as your computer, router, etc. If that doesn’t work, then it’s time to consider better cables.

Materials make a big difference, especially Silver, some people are not that tuned in, to notice the difference, but they're all you're audioble differences, some more than others, my designs are outstanding & most importantly they cost peanut to make, I'd be very surprised if you couldn't tell the difference, between cheap cables & my cables. All the people that have made my design, are over the moon with them, I would go as far as say, they are the best you can get, thanks for commenting & watching👍
