I actually had this exact experience for an engagement photo shoot. Thankfully I have a lot of wrestling dieting history behind me way before my powerlifting journey. So dieting comes ez to me, even the “suicide” cut. 5 weeks is all I can handle before I spiral. Been there, done that, learned a lot lol. If I had to give only 1 piece of advice, it would be this - for those 5ish weeks….. be EXCESSIVELY KIND to your significant other whenever possible, and remind them that your temperament will be less than great for a temporary period of time.

Same goes for bodybuilding contest prep. Even if you’re taking it slow, getting exotically lean can do that. Super low bodyfat causes testosterone to decline and diet fatigue raises cortisol. Together those produce irritability, anxiety, and mood swings. Also when you’re on prep you have less leeway to be flexible and sociable and stuff. As Andre Ferguson put it, (kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6a9l4SqpsaiqqM) you have to be more selfish with your time. If you’re committed to doing the show there’s only so much you can do to avoid this (diet breaks and refeeds might offer a bit of respite), so really it’s about building up goodwill and controlling the damage. 1) Let your friends and family know what to expect so at least it’s not a surprise and they know it’s just physiology fighting back. 2) Again borrowing from Mr. Ferguson, repay their kindness during the off-season.

I started my weight loss may 2021, I lost 77 lb's in 7 months, I somehow managed to figure out and do everything Mike's saying here (excluding the peaking part) by watching youtube videos and reading a lot. I had few weeks off on my diet and about once a month a cheat day, when I allowed my stuff my face with anything I wanted. I quit the diet cold turkey because of Christmas, I kept my activity level high because of new found energy that I had from eating like a normal human being, that made me gain about 10lb's in 3 months but a lot of it was muscle, so I'm not complaining. In the last 2 months I've already lost most of that weight, even though I'm eating normally. I intend to lose about 20lb's more during the summer and I'm just going to do what I did last year. I wouldn't exactly recommend anyone to do this long term unless you have few screws loose.

But my goal has now also increased by 10kg bodyweight and I‘m 6 days a week in the gym instead of the starting 2 days. I still love it but it has sort of become an obsession. This is really great advice BUT I think it's missing two VERY important call outs as well; this kind of crash dieting *really* also needs you to be both in control of your cortisol (stress) and sleep levels (i.e. you don't have any ongoing sleep issues before starting); even with excellent training and proper nutrition, you really won't get anywhere near as far as you'd like without also having those other two issues locked down.

Hi Dr. Mike First of all, thanks for the most (maybe the only) professional KZbin channel. 95% of the valuable knowledge I have, I got from you. Incredible job. And after these compliments I have a small request which I believe concerns a very big portion of your audience. People in the age of 40-70. The basics you teach so well are lacking special nuances which need to be mentioned regarding the way a 50 years old (or 60 etc) needs to train, what realistic achievements he can hope for, how he should train for best results and how he needs to manage his progress. You made one video on aging, which was a very interesting introduction, but what about diving deep with a special serries for the segment? We are living in an Era in which 50, 60 and even 70 years old guys want to look good, have the best body possible and are willing do work hard for it. And many of them are beginners. I think many people will be grateful if you can start a special serries for this huge audience. Right now, the available channels who deal with this topic have a very low quality material about this group of age. Hope you will raise the glove and do something about it. Rony Tel Aviv

i think he outlined it in that video. i'm 55 and realistically, everything he talks about is relevant, but one has to lower expectations for gains, and the time it takes to achieve results. fatigue and injury management monitored a bit more carefully, etc. otherwise i believe it's more of the same.

Suffer a little and one week it will just snowball after a few weeks of doing it consistently and then decide where to go . It’s a lot easier to do this after staying somewhat consistent than to decide one day workouts and diet are happening but you will still make a noticeable difference in 4-6 weeks from 10-20 lbs of fat loss and people will be noticing and you will be getting good comments and feel quick and fast and have energy . I’ve done this 3 times over 3 years and dropped 30lbs per month consistently. Training 6 days a week, 2 hrs a day. It’s an excellent ego boost; definitely not recommended for long term sustainability mostly because your mood is not where it is at it’s healthiest when not pushing so hard in a short duration to achieve your very best. Drink A LOT of water when doing this. Just trust me on that one.

I went down to 21% body fat from 30% in 8 weeks while preservering most of the muscle. Extreme lethargy after week 5-6. You definitely need anti hunger strategies from the other videos on this channel. PSMF while working out 5-6 days a week is not for everyone but its effective. I am 100% sure if my non exercise daily activitiy was higher I would go even lower on bf. Good ole PSMF. I never thought I'd see a video covering it on RP! Great video, Mike! Any reason why you would suggest this vs just a large deficit if you're a large male? If you can lose 2 lbs a week safely, is there really much benefit to crash dieting vs dropping 10 lbs over 5 weeks and then psmf week of/carb load etc?

And 50 carbs on non training days. 10k steps in non training days minimum. 30 mins 4% incline @ 3.5 speed after works outs. On week 4 atm. About to cut the carbs in half for the remaining 4 weeks add 15 mins to the tread mill. Workouts/ starving sucks but imo being busy keeps your mind of how much it sucks lol

Should you workout the day before the shoot? I'm guessing no because you don't want to be encouraged to drink fluids? Also, should you be consuming anything the day of (before the shoot)? What if it's in the evening?
@Leo-qm2rt2 жыл бұрын
Watch their other peaking video for nattys with Jared Feather - he suggests not too otherwise you may come in flat. Plus if it's a hard workout you're going to be building up inflammation which can cause you to retain water subcutaneously. I think this is why some bodybuilders avoid training legs during a peak week
@RenaissancePeriodization2 жыл бұрын

Hey Dr. Mike, this is strictly an anecdotal statement but i did keto a couple years ago and I coupled it with fasting. I found that when in a fasted state i slept my best. Hey doc, thanks for all the awesome content! Is 1h of “hard elliptical” really equivalent to 5-10k steps?? 1h at 140+ BPM gets me way hungrier and fatigued than 10K steps, doesn’t it burn more calories? Long live your channel!

1h hard elliptical is for sure going to burn more calories than 10k steps. 10k steps for me is about 4 miles of walking, a leisurely hour on the elliptical would be like 6 miles for me. also, the elliptical has you moving your arms much more than when you walk, and requires more stability

I get fat easy, but I can lose it fast too. Sometimes too fast. I am 5'10" and was about 205-225lbs at low body fat. I went through some crap in my life and went to 250+. In 90 days, I lost 89lbs. It was high volume 2-3 hour workouts, 3-5 miles of running a day, I did the 1 gram per pound of protein, usually a hand ful of brocoli about 3-5 times a day. Problem was I lost about 25 lbs of muscle that I have not been able to get back and ended up with a kidney infection. Forgot to add, tons of supplement esp vitamins and mineral. I took stims and you have to be VERY CAREFUL. Fortunately, I started with a resting pulse of around 55 (in perfect shape and at the end of these 90 days I was in the 40's). My stim of choice was ECA (25/200/baby aspirin) x 3.

I'm skinny fat (6' 0", 176lb around 20% BF), live in Japan (relevant because of available/affordable ingredients), and I've just started a 6 month kind of gaintaining plan, and I'm eating a shitload of stir fry (sans rice), cause it's easy, cheap, fast, highly variable, and tastes good. Basically, I make it about 5 days a week, 3 days chicken breast, 1 day shrimp, 1 day pork (not that lean but not bacon). For veggies I do mostly a mix of bean sprouts, broccoli, carrots, radish, bell peppers and cabbage. I usually put about 2 Tbsp of vegetable oil and some garlic in the pan and season liberally without adding too much salt. The other two days I might have mapo tofu, chicken breast salad, or the like. A couple times a month I'll eat bolognese spaghetti or other pasta. Once a month I'll get a McDonald's burger without fries or a couple slices of pizza. In the mornings I drink 1 cup of coffee with about 2 Tbsp milk, other than that I drink water or low sugar sports drinks. For snacks I'll eat mostly chicken breast. I drink alcohol twice a weak (3 or 4 whiskey sodas). I don't currently take any supplements other than a daily multivitamin. Do you think this strikes a good balance? Is the vegetable oil gonna make or break me? Is there some healthier tweaks of substitutes anyone would recommend? I feel I should definitely incorporate some whey protein at least. I don't know much of anything about creatine. Plenty of gym dorks in the past told me it just adds water weight and does nothing for strength, but most of what you hear around the gym is bullshit so yeah.

I haven gotten similar results with a 1500 calorie day (50% deficit from my personal maintenance calories), but by keeping in sweet potato in 2 out of 3 meals and having white rice with the pre workout meal. The sweet potato and rice is obviously less volume than heaps of greens, but 1500 calories of protein and carbs would help you train way better, sleep better etc - obviously having such low fats will fuck up hormones long term. I personally don’t find fats that satiating anyway and only keep the bare minimum in for hormones during a normal diet anyway, so cutting them right back for 4-6 weeks isn't that big a deal to me. Give me 1500 calories of chicken and sweet potato on a suicide diet any day - still horrible, but at least there is energy for weights. It works out to be about 200g protein, 155g Carbs, 12g fat.

I'd say if you don't have a month, do what you can in 2 days. The only thing one can accomplish is ofcourse to empty the intestines, but showing up well hydrated and without a stomach full of food does wonders for the skin and the waistline.
