Thank you for this informative, easy to follow video. I just completed a cushion for a friend and I am SO pleased by the way it turned out. I've been sewing for 45+ years and while I've made cushions for myself in the past, I really wanted to make this one look perfect. With the help of your clear instructions and close-ups on the trickier parts, this cushion looks totally professional. My friend has another cushion she wants recovered; I'm actually excited to tackle that one as well! Thanks again.

Thanks, Sailright, for the simple but very effective instruction videos. I ran a 6 person Upholstery, awning and marine shop in Michigan for years after being laid off my enginneering job in the auto industry. I sewed some, but not much. I designed, built and welded frames, sold, ordered, kept books , managed etc. I'm simi-retired and doing some marine, awning and light upholstery work here in Florida. I find myself using your videos to help me with sewing allot! Thank You!

What a fantastic Tutorial this is. I did a 2 Year College Course for Soft Furnishings years ago. I have a great Sewing Machine but seem to have a Block on getting it out. I want to make a box cushion but remembered it being quite hard, but this Tutorial makes me see it with fresh eyes., it all makes sense now. The use of the Tape takes so much hassle out of this process. The Man Talking explains it all so well but having the Visual at the same time is perfect. Thank You. I look forward to seeing your other videos.

Thank you, thank you! I watched many videos on boxed cushions before I made one. This was the video I followed while sewing my first box cushion today. I took my time, redid what I had to, and I'm pretty pleased! I used a velvet like fabric so it was a bit of a challenge. I have three more to make, so should get easier. THIS IS THE ONE TO FOLLOW ALONG! (And basting tape is my new best friend).

I have to say your video's are very informative and point on. I do have one question, I followed the instruction to the tee, however, when I cut the fabric to the exact measurement of foam, it was to small and I had to redo with a seam allowance. Also, the piping was really hard to work with that small. Any suggestions? Maryola

Hi Christian Griffith, To create the zipper plaque for the cushion use the boxing width and add the width of the zipper to it. So, if your foam is 3" I usually add a 1/4" to a 1/2" to that measurement (meaning my boxing is 3 1/4" overall or 3 1/2" overall). So... for the boxing that contains the hidden zipper add the width of the zipper to that measurement (If you make 3 1/2" boxing and your zipper is 1 1/4" wide your zipper plaque boxing width would be 4 3/4").

That was the question I was going to ask! Thank you! Also,I was wondering how to install the zipper piece(zipper plaque is a new term to me). I was thinking there wouldn't be a good way to make an exact calculation. You did it pretty much how I imagined. I am making a window seat. Do you recommend to wrap the foam in batting? I was thinking of doing this and then your video showed the previous cushion was batting wrapped. I'm using quilting weight cotton that will be backed with a product called Soft and Stable which will then be quilted. It's a thin type of foam used to make handbags, similar to headliner. I thought it would give the quilting weight fabric substance since it's rather thin for a cushion.
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 9 жыл бұрын
Danielle Hudson Wrapping the foam in batting will do two things: it will give a rounded look to the side of the cushion rather than a box look. It will also provide more thickness (not much more) and a little more cushion (but again very little). The main reason for using the batting is the rounded look (which is mostly a preference, some like it others do not). Yes, soft and Stable is different from "Sew Foam" which we call "Polyurethane Foam 1/4", 1/2" or 3/4" With Fabric Backing".

I have Four questions: 1. Does your industrial machine allow you to use a longer stitch? 2. What type/size thread are you using? 3. Do you have any tips for making a foam covered box pillow for a curved seat cover? I'm not using dacron over the foam, but do have pillow protector over it. It is slightly curved on both sides and more curved in the front, straight in the back. 4. Would the zipper or velcro go on a curved end, or along the back? Your videos are clear and easy to understand, both verbal instruction and the video part. They are inspiring me to get back into cushion making - but last time I worked under a master, now it's 20 years later and I'm doing it alone.

Answers to questions: 1. The Ultrafeed will sew up to a 6mm stitch length and obviously smaller. The Sailrite Fabricator Sewing Machine sews up to an 8mm stitch length or less. 2. We used a Polyester thread for this job. It will also sew many other types of threads including a PTFE thread called Profilen. 3. This video may help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWebh419qJ54l7s How to Sew a Curved Seat Back Cushion 4. The above video uses a zipper in the boxing. Let me know if you have more questions.

I am so glad to find this video! I have question before cutting my pieces: Don't I need to cut top and bottom pieces bigger to allow for seam? She is cutting them exactly the size of the foam. Thank you!
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+Shannon S Good question. In most cases we only cut the top and bottom plates a 1/4" larger than the foam all around. When I make cushions I usually trace around the foam on top of my fabric and this results in a plate that is slightly larger than the foam (by about 1/4" or less) which is acceptable for me. Now that seems like you will not have much left over for your seam allowance (3/8" seam) --- which is true as it (the seam) will take up some of the size of the plate. The finished cushion will result in a tighter fitting cushion cover for a better fit (it will compresses the foam). To the boxing (facing) I cut it to the width of the foam plus about 1/4" to 3/4". Keep in mind that thinner cushions look best with more allowance added and thicker cushions look best with less. Basically adding less of an allowance will allow the seams to roll into the edging of the cushion. This slight lack of fabric for seam allowance make the cushion look better and when the fabric stretches with use it will not be as wrinkly. With that said, this is not a rule, but rather my preference when making cushions, so do what works for you. Let me know if you have more questions.

I thought this video was exceptional and gave me the confidence to redo my RV cushions. I am wondering though if the type of cushions inside have any bearing on whether or not to leave a seam allowance. My soy-based cushions are rather firm and I'm a little concerned about not leaving a seam allowance. Comments?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 9 жыл бұрын
Yazmin Shroff Very good question. Yes, if you foam does not compress much (is very firm) then you may want to add a slight bit of seam allowance. In most cases, foam that does not compress, it not very comfortable, so this would be a rather rare situation. What you want to avoid is a cushion cover that is too large, some fabrics will actually stretch slightly over the years and then you will have wrinkles or covers that are too lose, so don't add too much seam allowance or you can have other issues.

I have a paper pattern of the exact size (which is irregular) of a window seat. Should the foam be cut to the exact pattern size, or will it shrink or expand a tiny bit when wrapped or covered with polyfil? I know to add seam allowance but just wondering if I need to allow for this variation once stuffed inside the boxed cushion?

I bought your basting tape and really liked using it but the tape allowed the stickieness to adhere to my sewing machine needle. Is there something I am not doing correctly??
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 9 жыл бұрын
brenda holtzinger Brenda - When sewing cushions with seamstick (basting tape) it is best to try to keep the seamstick well inside the area that you are sewing. So the needle does not penetrate the double sided tape. That way the glue does not show up when the cushion cover is turned right side out. That is not the case for other applications using seamstick, but it is for cushions. When the needle enters and exits fabric with seamstick, glue build up may happen on the needle (if the fabric does not have enough body to clean the needle with every penetration) in those cases I use a cotton ball with Goo Gone or rubbing alcohol to wipe the needle clean if it builds up.

I notice that when you draw an outline of the foam onto the material, you don't add anything for a seam allowance; is that correct?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY Жыл бұрын
True, the foam is usually a little larger (1/4" on all sides) than the desired finished size. So, when the top and bottom plate of fabric is cut it is the same size as the foam. After the seam allowance, of 1/2" is taken up the cover is smaller than the foam for a great looking compression of the foam with no wrinkles or sagging. The boxing is usually cut about 1/2" to 3/4" wider than the width of the foam. So.... if you have a 4" foam I cut the boxing to 4 1/2" or 4 3/4" wide.

Could you make the "zipper" placket a velcro placket or opening instead? How would it be cut/installed?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 9 жыл бұрын
Byron Williams Yes, you could. I would make a zipper plaque that is wider than the cushion thickness by about a 1/2 inch then I would add about 2 inches for the width to create a single hem. Then cut the boxing in half and create a single hem that is 1 inch and sew on the Veclro at the same time (hook on one side loop on the other).

Hi Janet, When you work from the foam (which is cut 1/2" larger than the desired finished cushion) you cut the plates the same size as the foam. These are the cushion rules we use here at Sailrite, which we prefer because it results in a nice tight cushion. It is DIY though so you can do whatever you want.

The fabric needs to be washed before cutting out if it's not actually upholstery fabric. Pinking sheers will also make a huge difference to threads fraying.

Can a hot knife be used on heavy cotton denim?

If it is made of cotton, no. It can only be used on synthetic fabrics.

I'm confused about the notches... Can you use clips, or pins, to hold the fabric in place?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 4 жыл бұрын
The notches are used to match up the second plate to the first on that was sewn onto the boxing. Yes, you can use clips or pins or seamstick for canvas 1/4" to baste / pin plates to the boxing prior to sewing.

They don't seem to add seam allowance on the top and bottom, which would shrink the cover and make it fit improperly. Did I miss something?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 10 жыл бұрын
The fact that the cover is smaller than the foam is a good thing. This compresses the foam slightly making the cover fit snugly in place. Remember making cushions is not set in stone, do what works best for you personally.

Ahh, that makes sense. I've done plenty of canvas but no cushions. Tackling my v berth soon, though. Thanks for the tutorials!

Following this video, I am so disappointed that the double sided tape has made my sewing needle sticky and gooey. I had already made my piping with the double sided tape as in video for eight cushions, after experiencing gooey sewing needle and my machine acting up, I took all my piping apart with the double sided tape! Lots of time wasted. Why did the tape ruin my needle?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 5 жыл бұрын
If a light weight fabric is used sometimes glue build up, from the double sided tape, can be seen on the needle. Usually a heavy fabric helps clean the needle as the needle enters and exits the fabric, so it is not as common with medium to heavy fabric. So... what can be done for lighter fabrics to help prevent the glue build up? I like to keep a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol on it and clean the needle when I start to see glue build up on the needle. Sometimes "Goo Gone" on a cotton ball can even be better, as it seems to helps to prevent the double sided tape from building up as fast on the needle.

I'm a viewer...I think her insustrial machine and the type of thread it can take makes it possible to use a longer stitch with good results. I wouldn't try it on my home machine. I wonder what Sailrite would say if this was posed as a question - think I'll ask up top.
