Great question. It helps us understand how the data is distributed visually. If you’ve worked with the bell curve before, they’re related. Each section of the box and whisker plot holds 25% of the data. So the big box holds 50% of the data. Hope that helps!

So it has been determined that anything more than 1.5x away from quartile 1 and 3 is considered an outlier. you multiply 16 by 150% which would give you an outlier that is outside de 100% data created by the box and whiskers. Each part of the box is 25% that is where the word quartile comes from. All parts of the box and whiskers will add to 100%.
