I show how to make a homemade chain whip/sprocket remover tool. A chain whip is used to hold the cassette while the lock ring is loosened when removing a cassette from a bike wheel. For Shimano Uniglide cassettes, two chain whips are used to remove the lock ring/cog.
These are the chain whips I display in the video:
Park Tool SR-2 Shop Sprocket Remover:
www.amazon.com/...
Avenir Chain Whip:
www.amazon.com/...
I get some viewers asking what a chain whip is for. Okay, here are a couple videos where I use a chain whip:

Thank you, I built one today for about $10.00 and 2 hrs work. Your clear, concise instructions saved my at least $20.00. I was able to remove my cassette and degunk a malfunctioning free hub, also using your instructions. I used an old inner tube wrapped in electrical tape for a handle. Worked great!

You gotta love how inches always come with "just a bit under", just a wee bit more than half ". But the best is the drill bit, 9/64th inch, love it!

Great idea and very simple to make. I used a spare scrap of angle iron rather than a strip of steel. This created a nice flat part on top where i was gripping and pushing And added extra stiffnes. Though as stated below many materials work fine. Thanks RJ, this saved me some $ and a trip to the bike shop, plus i already had the chain scraps since i typically replace my chain and casette and the same time.

I made one of these a few weeks ago with these instructions and it works like a charm. I ended up making only a 14" handle which seems long enough for my uses. Also, the steel bar at Home Depot was in the $6-7 range for 3 ft. Thanks for the video @RJ The Bike Guy !

It’s a Chain Wrench. not a Chain Whip. A Chain Whip is a Chinese weapon. This is not a whip. I can’t understand why OP and others are calling it a “Whip”.

Made my own on a whim and then saw your vid. The only thing different I might suggest is the bar material. In the lumber section of Home Depot, you can get stud reinforcers that are much thinner but for about .99 instead of $10. for the bar I saw. I duct taped three together to get the same thickness...

I love your videos, they are so helpful. I'm doing a project bike right now. I have a TREK 820. I want to convert it into a gravel bike. I want to make it a 1x? I am thinking a 9 spd cassette. I have 133mm on the spacing of rear frame where tire goes. What would you recommend for the chainring? The brakes on it ,look like shorty v brakes. I'm thinking cantilevers on it. I'll wait to see what you think. Going to repaint the bike too, and put gravel bars on it.

I made one even easier than this. I cut a 1ft. piece off a broom handle, took an old length of chain and simply screwed it to the handle. 1 screw on the tip and 1 screw 5 or 6 links down. It took about 3 mins. to make. I've used it several times and it works very well. If it breaks just find another broom handle and make a new one. Remember to drill pilot holes for the screws to keep the handle from splitting.

RJ The Bike Guy WHAT???? REALLY??? So you're saying that when I remove my chain from my bike with my chain breaker I cannot put it back on because I would have to use the pin again? Are you nuts? Time for a mechanical engineer to re-educate you in a few things chain. #1 Pins are easily pressed in and out with a chain breaker and it does (near) zero damage to the chain or the pins (usually). I have done hundreds of them. And the pins rarely ever get damaged as they are hardened steel. But sometimes the outer plates get damaged/bent/reamed as they are made of much softer steel (but still harder steel than the chain breaker/press pin). When an outer plate gets damaged, then you probably should not use it again, but I have and never had one fail in service. #2 Chain pins are made of much harder and tougher steel than your average hardware store socket head cap screw, esp. with the cap screw being threaded (aka a reduced diameter/cross sectional area). The only thing close to as hard as a chain pin would be a grade 8 socket head cap screw. (I doubt you used any, as they are not at all easy to find/source in smaller sizes, at least in/from your basic hardware store). #3 Chain pins do wear in the use of a chain, and thus 1/2 of why old chains "stretch" and why old chains should not be reused and why you should not use an old pin from an old chain on a new chain. But to use an old pin to make a chain whip would be 100% okay, as it is not so much weaker, as it is just a wee bit circumferentially worn in the center, thus a slightly smaller diameter in the middle section where the inner link/bushing rides. But the ends of the pin that press into the plates do not wear at all (or very much) and will be just as tight as always (unless the hole in the outer plate gets errantly reamed by a misaligned pin, then your outer plate is shot but your pin is still okay). #4 Be assured (by me) that your chain whip chain(s) will never ever see the sorts of stresses and strains that your actual bike chain on your bike sees, either monetarily, or over long periods of riding time. #5 Sorry to say, but you are 100% wrong on this one.

*shrug* do it your way.
@ettienneschwagele6486
@ettienneschwagele6486 9 жыл бұрын
Greg Kibitz It depends on the chain and the pins. On older chains you can reuse the pins, but on newer chains (9/10/11+ speeds) you cannot. Not easily anyway, you get special linking pins.

I found your video informative and concise, except for the fact that I had absolutely no idea what a chain whip tool was used for. I think if you remake this video and add a very short demonstration or explanation that it will eliminate any negative comments.

my homemade one actually bent on one of the stuck cassette, i still cant get the cassette out:
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 10 жыл бұрын
How did you bend it on a cassette? The chain whip is only used to hold the cassette while you turn the lock ring with a lock ring tool. Or in the case of a uniglide cassette, to hold the cassette and another to turn the lock ring. Neither should put enough force on the tool to bend it.
@edwardlui531

@RJTheBikeGuy 10 жыл бұрын
I have never seen a stuck lock ring on a cassette. I could see it with a uniglide cassette maybe where the chain is tightening the smallest cog which locks the cassette on to the hub. But a lock ring is just tightened on with a wrench. The torque specs on most lock rings is like 30-40nm.
@edwardlui531

Derek Hobbs 1" =25.4 mm, so the bar is just a bit slimmer, but it's longer! 3 mm is a bit thin as it's only about 1/8". 3/16 =4.75 mm. the 1/8" seemed a bit bendy to me. Who said size doesn't matter mate? Cheers!
