Thank you Marie. many years ago I tried making a basket and when it was dry I was wiping it down when it all fell apart so I think your idea of using a sponge for support is great! next time I used the inside of a bisque mold to make my baasket so I was able to fire in still inside the mould. It worked. I shall try and make a basket your way soon.

Hi, I've been googling for a while but still unclear bw the diff in pottery and ceramic. They say pottery is another type of ceramic. But what makes them diff? does it have something to do with clay composition. I will be literally grateful for your answer.

Hi, Marie: thank you so much for your videos--I have been watching a ton of them, and have learned so much from you! I have a basket-specific question, if you have a moment. I tried to make a "loop style" (non-woven) bread basket that uses coils on a slab base. I used B-Mix 5, and I modeled it around a wad of bubble-wrap that I had taped together into the shape I wanted. I dried it super slowly, as the base was thicker than the coils, and I thought it came out really good, but when I went to move it to the kiln, it broke in about six different places along the coils. I guess I have two questions: first, do you think the problem was with the choice of B-Mix, and maybe it would hold together better using Soldate 60, or some other clay? And second, is there some type of soft foam (similar to your sponge example) that I could buy and carve to make the right size and shape of support? I don't want to give up on this design! Thank you in advance for any help! --Leha

I forgot to mention, it was about 8" tall, and 10" wide, which I guess could be part of the problem. (?) The coils were about 3/8" wide.

Hi Leha, Thank you! That sounds pretty cool. I would try again. 8 by 10 is not that big. It sounds more like the clay. 3/8 is a good thickness and should not have broke. Did you use B- mix or B-mix with grog. I would try soldate 60. I have had great success with larger items and I use it for Raku.

I also went and read your article on your favorite clays, and then ordered some Amaco Buff 46, so maybe I will try one in each of those clays and see which favors the project more. I appreciate your help and encouragement so much! The failed one was actually a mix of B-mix and B-mix with grog, wedged together. I had tried the grogged version straight, but it felt too coarse for what I was after. Thanks again!
