Hello Marie I was wondering if you can help me figure something out I made a pottery piece with writing on it and I want to underglaze and wipe it back and put a glaze over it. Wondering do I need to wax resist the lettering or can I leave it
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
Very good question. You don't need to use wax resist if you are using a transparent glaze. If you are using a glaze that would cover up your writing then you would need wax resist, but your writing would not have a matte or glossy finish over it if you use wax resist.

@@PotteryCrafters ok another question for the same project can I use any glaze that brakes over texture and the lettering will go darker? I just want the letters to stand out,with out it coming out later. I want to underglaze and wipe back but I want the letters the same as the glaze shiny or do I not want that. Or will it matter if the letters are underglazed and not shiny. Trying to decide.
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
You can do it with a celadon glaze, so you still get color, and your lettering shows through. Yes, you can also use a glaze that breaks, but the letters have to be deep and wide enough for the glaze to break. Take iron luster, for example. You get two different colors. One from the thicker layers and another from thinner layers. Be careful because the glaze can run and not so the letters as well. Or you can apply film resist to your lettering. glaze it. Let it dry, then peel off the film resist and apply clear glaze to the lettering. Here is the link for you to check it out geni.us/DAJu3Ns 😊

Hi Marie! Thank you so much for your amazing video. How do you get the colours to pop without adding 3 layers of the same brush? I use TS white ceramic and I always need to put on 3 layers for my colours to come through. Thank you!
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome 😊 I rarely apply 2 coats of underglaze. It may be the brand of underglaze, the thickness of the underglaze, or the amount applied. I also only apply 2 coats of clear glaze. If you apply clear glaze too thick, you get a milky look. I hope this helps.

My studio fires everything at Cone 10 gas reduction. Can you recommend some high fire underglazes that won't burn out at Cone 10?
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
Very good question Peter. When my studio fired Cone 10 gas reduction I use Spectrum Underglazes. The only color that turned out darker than I wanted was spring green. The other colors like blue, red, and yellow turned out great 😊👍

I know this is an older video but it appears you applied only one coat of underglaze? I was under the impression it should be applied 3 times? Can you tell me what the correct application would be? Thank you!!!!
@PotteryCrafters Жыл бұрын
Hi Jeannie. Yes, I usually apply only 1 coat. Sometimes 2. It all depends on the look you want to create. I was also taught to 3 coats, which is subjective to the art we want to create.

Can underglaze pieces touch in bisque firing?
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary . That is a very good question. No underglaze pieces can not touch other pottery because the the underglaze will transfer to the other piece it is touching.
