Another idea for making the roller would be to start with a Sonotube. A 48"x10" one is about 16 dollars at Home Depot. A lot less work than all of the kerf cutting and glueing. You could cast the hubs out of concrete, with the axle in place, and a hole in the first hub. The hole would provide a means to add concrete for the second hub, as well as filling with sand afterwords. You might want to attach a board inside, along one side, to provide a place to attach the stamp. Heck, now that I think about it, you could just fill it with sand before casting the second hub which would be simpler than flipping it.

I 100% agree! next time I do this, I'd probably use a 10inch PVC pipe
@vonbyorn9098
@vonbyorn9098 3 жыл бұрын
I would try one of those high density cardboard tubes from the hardware store for pouring concrete in when putting posts in the ground, easy to find them in large diameters, maybe even brush it with some cheap fiberglass resin, with or without the cloth.
@TheHowtoDad

If i do this again, I will use a PVC sewer pipe. You can usually get off-cuts from excavation companies. They are waterproof so they won't break down during the pour

You can buy a stamp for about $200 or rent a set for a day. I really suggest spending the $100 on a can of liquid release instead of using mineral spirits. Also, getting a brick texture to line up and look good is even hard for professionals. I'd suggest just going with a stone texture. It is way easier and looks just as good. Also, you need a good antiquing color for the top to bring out the texture. Then spend $100 on poly seal EZ sealer. Lastly. The concrete is by far the biggest cost, and you have about a one hour window to get it stamped or you will be ripping it out and redoing it which will cost more than having a profesional do it in the first place. One concrete arives, you have about 3 hours max to get the job done before it hardens up. If you have never finished concret before, you REALLY do not want to start with stamped
@TheHowtoDad
@TheHowtoDad 4 жыл бұрын
This true. IF you have a place to rent stamps, great. To buy A stamp for $200 is one thing, but you'll likely need a minimum of 3 stamps to make a decent pattern. Release agent is the best stuff, but it's not available everywhere (definitely not where I am). All of your points are valid! Thanks for the comment!

Great idea with the silicone mold. Not so much with the roller though. I could def see you were struggling to keep it balanced and straight, especially on those long runs. I may attempt the DIY mold, but make a few and attach them to ply wood with handles so I can lay them in the more traditional stamping process. I would never be able to un-see the uneven line joints :D Thanks for the idea and inspiration for us DIYers.

Mix normally. The key is waiting for the poured and floated concrete to set up to a point where it will support the roller. Basically you wait until you can stick your finger into the concrete up to the first knuckle on your finger

I used it for 2 jobs, seemed to hold up fine. silicone is really tough stuff! if I do it again, I'd use a 10” PVC drain pipe
