I have been knitting for 16 years now, since 2004, and I enjoy it. I crocheted several shawls and a beautiful star-shell afghan back in the 1970s. Recently I have been trying to crochet again. I am starting with adding a single crochet border around a scarf I've designed and knitted. That hasn't been a problem for me because I don't have to worry about making a chain. I knitted a selvage as I went along on the scarf, and the single crochets will be worked into the selvage stitches. My trouble with crocheting now is mastering how to start from the beginning, by making a long chain using uniform tension. I know that maintaining good tension takes a lot of practice. I don't think my left hand is as strong as it was back in the 1970s when I first learned to crochet. 50 years makes a big difference.

I too do both. As a child of about 7 my Mother taught me to knit. In my early teens I taught myself to crochet and in turn taught her. Mother found crochet most suitable when travelling to work on the crowded NYC subways and knitted mainly at home. Throughout my life I have loved doing both. Using knit and crochet to create baby cardigans to afghans through to lace and decorations. I first saw you two on British television and have been a fan ever since. I trust you are now recuperated from Covid-19. Thank you for your help, your enthusiasm and your joy.

I can do both but I'm not good at crochet as I'm left handed and everything is back to front for me. So, I prefer knitting. I love colourwork knitting and am mostly making fair isle blankets these days.

I taught myself to crochet in July 1971 in my early 20's w/a size 1 steel hook & crochet thread. It's been a passion ever since. I started wanting to learn knitting many years ago but just couldn't get the hang of it. Everyone said to learn on big needles & big yarn. But that was so awkward for me! Then recently, a young knitter suggested I try 4.5 - 5.5mm needles & smaller yarn. I bought some 4.5 mm , bamboo, circular needles. Well ! What a difference that has made ! Now, I'm having a much easier time w/it ! I think I'm going to be able to get the hang of it now & that makes me very happy. Besides, it's so good for the brain to learn new things. I really like the look of these bags you two made. I'll probably be making some using your ideas. Thanks so much!

I do both crochet and knit. It depends on the project. Crochet is so much faster. Crochet gives a beautiful edge to a knitted scarve, or sleeve etc. You can recycle a worn out t-shirt that you can’t part with, but it has seen its day. Adding a crocheted border gives it new live. And you helped the planet.

My grandmother gave me a little soft-cover book by Coats & Clark titled "Learn How To." It was from 1959, had a light green cover. It had instructions for Knitting, Crocheting, Tatting, and Embroidery. My sister and I used it to learn how to embroider on our jeans and chambray shirts in 1970 (It was that whole hippie thing). I kept my copy of the book with me for years. In about 1977 I started crocheting, learning from that book, a roommate, and a friend of my grandmother's. In about 1985 I taught myself to knit from that book. I also tat. The only thing I do not really do much of is sewing, though I did do a coverlet for my first child back in about 1988 on an old sewing machine.

I taught myself crochet when I was a teenager, working in a fabric store - from a book ... so the way I hold the hook and tension my yarn is very much ingrained, but comfortable. When I taught myself knitting when I was 50, there was KZbin to help ... but was amazed at the different techniques and terms just for the mechanics of holding and working the stitches! I go back and forth between knit or crochet projects. My most recent kick has been crocheted shopping bags, totes, and small project pouches. p.s. I love watching Arne knit without looking ... that's the way I crochet! Thanks for a great show - cheers from California, USA!

I've learnt to knit as a child in elementary school in Hungary. We all knitted a necktie for our dads. I have re-learned how to knit as a grownup from a Finnish lady. I prefer the look and feel of knitted items, however crochet is more practical for certain projects such as baskets. I have taught myself to crochet much later. Recently, I came across a crochet stitch imitating the knit stitch! The best of both worlds, the speed and firmness of crochet with a look of knits.

Thank you for your instructions. You are always so interesting and helpful. I learned to knit and crochet as a small child, back in the 1930's. To save you doing arithmetic, I'll be 90 next week. I learned to sew and embroider too. I find all kinds of needlework enjoyable and relaxing... except one. For me, tatting is finicking and frustrating and downright exasperating. Once long ago I tatted a lace edging for a handkerchief. it took a year. I gave it to my grandmother, and found a new home for my tatting shuttle.

I have tatted, but only one design (a snowflake) several times. I actually do anything with fiber, including quilting, but the two main thing I do are knitting and full-coverage cross stitch landscapes. I also do other crafts and always have at least 3 or 4 ongoing projects so I can alternate them when I get tired of what I am currently doing. I love these bags! I learned to crochet when I was young. I recently decided to challenge myself and learn to knit. That’s how I found your channel 😀 I found your Scandinavian style to be the easiest to learn since the way the yarn is held is similar to what I am used to from crocheting.

I started out with crochet - many, many blankets! - but I now spend most of my time knitting. Love this crocheted bag, though! Hope you are feeling better, Carlos.

Both, I learned to crochet first at 10 years old, and knit at 18. I think because I was a crocheted first, that is why I knit continental. I hold the crochet hook and knitting needle in my right hand the same way basically. And hold the yarn in my left hand basically the same way. Keep healthy and as always, thank you for sharing!

I knit but find tension problems with crochet. That said, I will try to do the bag. I have seen some amazing work combining both which is inspiring. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Hey, guys! I do both Knit and crochet. And I had learned the first stitches in both techniques with my father. Kiss kiss! ****

I do both but my knitting has always been at the beginner stage. That is until I found Arne and Carlos. They and those that have shared their projects have inspired me. I made a block in the knit along and it was awesome! Now my plan is to knit a pair of socks. As to making the bag, I'm going to try out both but crocheting will go much quicker.

I am a knitter but I do crochet just like borders around blankets and things and one shawl pattern. Fore me it is so that I am more interested in knitting and have always been so it comes easy to me 🙂

I do both. I learned to knit from one Norwegian grandma and to crochet from my other Norwegian grandma. Thinking about this makes me smile.

Both crochet and knit. As well as combining them is so fun. If you learn tension you can learn both. I know did not learn to knit for years after my grandmother taught me to crochet

I agree with Arne! Take a break and switch it up! Realized this while knitting the quarantine pillow - all of my colorwork was done in duplicate stitch - a great break from constant knitting. Love to knit, crochet, and do needlework. Right now, I'm making these market bags to plow through my cotton yarn and empty another box. Thanks for your great ideas! ;-)
