I Like To Make Stuff thank you so much I have to make some bends with stainless steel behind my mother's stove where they changed the window so it needs a splash pan and it will match the rest of the stove. Once I get the bender I can see us using it more often once we have one for other projects my brother is a scrap metal guy everyone that needs to get rid of metal calls my brother ovens refrigerator bikes you name it he recycles it, I try and pull out the good stuff before it goes to the steal mill to send to China

One suggested improvement is to add small coil springs from the hardware stored to go under the orange bar onto the hold down carriage bolts. That way when you undo the wing nuts the orange bar will lift up slightly to allow the sheet metal to easily slid underneath.

I made it! It turned out great too. Thanks. A few things while they're in my mind. 1. If you have angle iron that isn't even have the short side on the bend piece. When you drill through the metal and 2x4 using the pilot bit use the forestner bit in the woods before you step up. You can't effectively use a forestner bit if the hole is too big. If you make the brake bigger know that the size doesn't translate to the piece. A 4 foot brake can't bend a 4 ft piece of metal. You must measure the space in between the screws. Lastly i made mine 4 ft. Because of the spacing the middle section of the bottom sagged so i drilled a hole in the middle, counter sunk it and put a machine screw in it. That's all i guess.

*CONTRARY TO OTHER COMMENTS* - I really noticed and LOVE the extra effort in video quality and color correction. It makes it feel even more professional. That being said, if it's eating up too much of your valuable time (for family) then maybe consider creating some LUTs (Look Up Tables) so that you can just apply that to future videos shot with the same lighting condition. All in all EXCELLENT work Bob!!

Nice video! Good photography and good explanations. Can we talk about metal gauge for a second? What gauge sheet metal will this bend? 16? 18? 20? I'm talking mild steel, which is the standard for rating a brake. I can convert that to galvanized or stainless (which will be different). Also , what is the thickness of the angle stock you're using? Those pieces come in different thicknesses - it's hard to tell from the video. Finally, if I wanted to make a brake with a thicker gauge capacity, could I just use thicker angle stock, or would I have to redesign it? Thanks.

Nice and relatively easy. Now, being the "and why didn't you try this?" guy that I sometimes am, I have to say: you modified the hinges for all the reasons you said and it works fine. But it's also true that you had also made that couple of cuts in the corners or that metal piece so the middle part (excuse my English, it's not exactly my first language) of the hinge can rest there. Well, I don't know if you can see where I'm going, but once that hole/slot is there, you could use it to put the hinge through there in it's original configuration. It will depend on the thickness of the both the metal plate of the hinge and that of the metal angle, but that is also true the way you've done it, since you might have to shim it or "file" it if it's too thin or too thick. Thank you for your time.

I remember a hundred years ago (the 70's ) me and my dad were trying to make a C channel to hold a spring or a shock on a rusted up 65 Mustang. We had no metal fab experience or equipment. So we took two oak 2x4s and multiple C clamps and a baby sledge hammer. We made them out of stainless steel scrap my dad got from his workplace. It worked. Drilling the hole was the next biggest pain and expense, but in the end it worked out. No welding, just threaded rod, and washers and nuts.

The top (teepee) piece of angle iron does not need to go to the ends of the brake, correct? This being the case, you could weld the door hinges to the END of the lower piece of angle iron INSTEAD of bolting it to the top. This way you can have a longer brake, allowing for the bending of longer piece of sheet metal. (drill the through-holes for the bolts CLOSER TO THE END of the top, teepee shaped angle. spacing the two through-bolts farther apart, allowing for wider sheets of metal to be bent)
@brucewmclaughlin90724 жыл бұрын
Loved the idea up to 5:20 when you started welding . I will just bolt it on. Like the video and the speed .Yes you did mention you can do it without welding.
@chrishouse5753 Жыл бұрын
Not sure if you'd still get messages or reply. Would it be worth interchanging the angle iron on top to a cylinder to also help with making curves (brakes with large radii technically)? Be nice to build this with interchangeable top pieces to vary the kinds of bends you could put into a sheet of metal.

@Tylerl1287 жыл бұрын
It would be great for a guy like me, I'm a sheet metal worker by trade, and this would be so much cheaper than buying one through the parts shop. It may not be practical for a business but, I could use this to prepare supplies at home before a side job. The only thing I would change is the wing nuts, it would be better if you had another hinge, to lift the part that holds down the metal, and a way for it to lock down tight. Because, if you need to use it a lot on the same piece, un-screwing and re-screwing the piece securely could get tedious, and slow down production time. Other than that, it seems to work great!
@ryszardeastwoodski29417 жыл бұрын
Since the size of the metal to be bent cannot be bigger that the distance between the 2 hold-down bolts, the orange clamp-angle piece only needs to extend just beyond the 2 hold-down bolts. Therefore, you could eliminate having to notch out the clamp-angle piece by having the length of the clamp-angle fit just between the hinges. Also, it appears that bending past 90 degrees is limited by the moving angle hitting the hold-down bolts. Notching the moving angle will provide clearance for the hold-down bolts and maximize the bend capability.
@drmkiwi7 жыл бұрын
Great project, thanks. Flipping one side of the hinge was a brilliant idea. Cheers, David.

Looks good! The portability of it is what makes it great. One suggestion: consider using cutting oil (or 3-in-1, WD40, etc.) when drilling into steel. Keeps cutting tool cooler, and hence, sharper, longer. I enjoyed your talk with the other makers at Maker Faire NYC last weekend.
