This was an amazing tutorial. I've always wanted to make my own masks, but I always thought I needed a lot of money to make something of quality. I made paper-mache masks as a child but I'd use balloons so they never fit my face well. I'm going to get started on making my first mask today. Very easy to understand and the steps explained very well. Very happy you posted this. Thanks!

Thank you for watching. Aluminum foil is more solid (reinforced with the mask tape) but it takes more time. Food wrap is quicker because you start building the face with newspaper directly on it, but it is a little weaker.😺

When I was in Mexico an uncle had taught me something similar and I stumbled upon your video looking for that . Great idea with the aluminum, my uncle used a balloon and blew it the same shape as ones head and apply the newspaper with the glue to it . Once hardened you pop the balloon and cut it in half to have the face part and you build upon that .
@babongababonga95884 жыл бұрын
Yes, the balloon technique is classic and very good too (I haven't tried it though 😺). The aluminum pan makes the mask very strong in the end but it takes time and patience to shape it. If the mask is to be worn, then it has to be covered with paper mache on both sides (outer and inner).

I really want to make a creepy early 1900's type of mask for Halloween this year, and since we need to wear a facemask, I'll just put one on when fitting the aluminum foil. I also wear glasses so I need to include those too 🙏🏻😭I'm so excited!! I did papier-maché in art class before so yeah I think I'll try a few times before getting the mask I really want but that's alright. Thank you!

I know I'm late, but did it work out alright? I'm planning on doing the same thing you're doing for this Halloween and I'd love some tips.
@uhohspaghettios4116 Жыл бұрын
@@williamsmitherson2170 Oh yea it was hella cool! and after that mask I made for Halloween I started doing some more because it was so fun! The glasses thing worked really well for me (idk if you do wear glasses but obviously if you have contacts I'd say wear them bc the 3D effect of the glasses on the mask is not always what you want) What I did was exactly what the woman did on the video but I think she shouldve insisted on the fact that the mask is very fragile when you have like 1 to 4 layers so it's hard to work on that and keep the shape. a mistake I did on my second mask was removing the aluminum foil off the mask after only a few coats, absolutely DON'T do that it's so hard afterwards to keep the shape😭😭. And yea have fun w/ it, remember you can shape it how you like, cut it how you want it's your creation and I think that's really cool. GOOD LUCK!!😁🙏🏻
@uhohspaghettios4116 Жыл бұрын
@@williamsmitherson2170 oh and also for the glasses w/ the mask it worked out pretty well for me, the mask stayed on even without any string or band, I didn't fix an elastic band to the mask because the mask clasped itself on my glasses and onto my face somehow, I don't know how I did it but what I know is that I really pressed onto the shape of my glasses w/ the aluminum foil and then the paper mâché and glue for a few coats with the mask on my face to make sure it fit well.
@williamsmitherson2170 Жыл бұрын
@@uhohspaghettios4116 thanks so much, your advice was seriously so helpful. I'm gonna give it a shot in a day or 2 when I get the free time. You inspired me to try and make masks and it is so much fun, really something else! The aluminum foil technique is good but I need several layers to make it hold. I guess it depends on the thicknes of the foil
@babongababonga95884 жыл бұрын
Instead of aluminum foil you can use food wrap film but still you have to wait for it to dry and its pretty thin (I ve done this for other masks and it needs more paper mache layers that means more time to dry without removing it) . The quickest way is to use a disposable soft aluminum pan : it holds the shape of your face and you can apply the paper mache without keeping it on. This is what I ve done for my skull masks on my latest video and it worked fine.

Hello I’m I’m currently in the process of making my mask. I wanted to know about how long does it take to dry between layers? Should it not feel tacky? It felt dry enough but a little tacky so I put the second layer on because I’m impatient. I’m letting the second layer dry longer until it’s not tacky at all? Thank you. I loved your video.
@babongababonga95885 жыл бұрын
It is ok to be a little tacky, apply 2-3 layers when you still wear it, let it get a little dry just enough to detouch it and then let it dry overnight (or for some hours in the sun if it is a good day). Then apply more layers to make it more solid (and some additional features if you like). No need to wait for each layer to be completely dry to apply the next, only when you finish adding them all, let it again dry completely: that is one more day, just to be sure. Then paint and it is ready!😺
