@@LostWax Yeah. I'm definitely gonna build one, using your work as inspiration, along with a nice, little replica, that I got a good deal on, at a thrift shop, as reference. It's pretty accurate, and the details appear to be exact. It's made of real brass and some other metals, and is roughly, about a quarter of the size of the real thing (about the size of a large cantaloupe or a honey dew melon). It's pretty cool looking for a small scale. Now I wanna make an actual size one out of EVA. I'm glad I found your video. GREAT JOB!!

Do you have any advice on how to clean up the messy glue seams before I paint it? Sandpaper perhaps?
@LostWax7 жыл бұрын
Definitely. I am going to assume you are using hot glue? If you take a small piece of the foam that you used to make the helmet- this works best if you didn't use really soft foam, and you rub that foam along the glue seam kinda quickly. The extra glue will soften and rub away, leaving a pretty nice seam. If you want to go a step further after that, use some fine (400grit) sandpaper and repeat.

just got the patterns, planning to build this with a few modifications namely some exhaust vents concealing fans, spooky looking window tinting (only after making sure a fan can provide enough air) and trying to figure out a simple way to harden the helmet with fiberglass and twist on/off the actual helmet from the collar for a costume im planning... one question, where can I get a roll of EVA foam that size, preferably from a retail outlet found in the USA?
@LostWax8 жыл бұрын
I'm not in the U.S. but I would check at the big hardware stores, usually sold as a kind of anti fatigue mat. I also have a link to one from Amazon on my product page here: www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/

I actually found some at harbor freight tools when I went for some cheap bits to work on this with. I was familiar with the puzzle mats but the roll is a bit thinner and I ended up picking up enough foam for several helmets as there was a sale on the puzzle mats

@LostWax5 жыл бұрын
The regular size pattern will fit on a 72" x 19" sheet of foam. As for density, you want something a similar density to the puzzle piece foam mats you can get. But it will work even with the lighter,foam you'd find in a camping mat.

It would be helpful if you gave a time frame of how long it actually takes to make these projects. I am a prop and costume maker and this build feels like I need a masters in computer science from MIT to complete. Assembling the pattern alone took around 2 hours. Cutting and tracing another 4 hours. Cutting the pieces from the foam was another 2 hours. Hot glue isnt the best choice for this build. Even using the mat ive had nearly every seam rip and i’ve had to re-enforce them with craft foam strips. I’m taking this build off my commission list or I’m charging $500 plus materials. 20/10 would not recommend this build to someone just starting out. Chris i do appreciate your videos and instruction and I’ve purchased your everything pattern package. Ive made many of the props in the package and this hands down is the hardest. Keep up the good work.
@LostWax5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it. Yes, this one can be a bit tricky, though I think it is also one of the most impressive builds once finished. I would be interested to hear what specific materials you were using, as I have not had feedback about seams popping, etc from others who have completed this pattern - there really shouldn't be a ton of stress on the seams as the curves are relatively gentle. If you have the time to give me more details, I would love to hear from you, my email address is lostwaxozcontact@gmail.com If you were to do it again, it might be worth trying some quality contact cement instead of hot glue. I don't recommend it to my viewers because it poses a significant health risk if you don't take proper safety precautions, but it might be the magic to make this an easier build for you.
