Hey guys, thanks for the video. I had to chuckle when you were using the two screwdrivers for prying the pulley. The left screwdriver looked like a beaver had been chewing on it. I had a similar one. Shorted it against hot when working on a live circuit. I imagine that's how yours got that way, too. 😁

Wouldn't a dielectric grease be preferred over the white lithium grease? The silicone base of the dielectric grease is far superior in inhibiting breakdown over time vs. the oil based lithium grease.

You need to always clean your solder joint with isopropyl alcohol to remove any of the leftover flux. Flux is highly corrosive and can cause the solder joint to eventually fail if not cleaned after soldering.

Sorry, if you bought the kit from us and that wasn't done FOR you, it was a mistake. We strive to always do our slight modifications to the piece before we ship. That is why it is not mentioned, because we don't want that done twice. However that operation (like all other soldering operations) starts with a thorough cleaning. Oxidation is everywhere!

You can safely use a baking soda blast on the fan he is using a wirebrush on . I have no knowledge of any specific issues with glass bead blasting. Its is essentially clean silica it has no conductive or contaminates I'm aware of. Most rebuilders use it exclusively. And the most crucial element of a good lead solder joint is absolutely clean surfaces. Then heat the surface to temp them apply the necessary amount of solder. And of course flux before heating but after cleaning.

i updated the alternator on my 77 f -100 and 67 ford ltd 390 same thing though to the g3 alternator from a 7.3 diesel ambulance supposed to be 200 amps but i'll tell ya that the head lights will be a lot brighter and your battery will love it. i also changed all cables to 1/0 heavy cables even the one from the solenoid to the starter.. my 77 f-100 460 is a 500 hp tourque monster weekend 4mph play pretty. both engines in both vehicles spins over faster and starts a lot more easy. i don't thing those old alternators were even 60 amps and you will need to do away with the external regulator east to do if you can get your hands on the wiring diagrams for both your truck and the newer alternator.. i'll tell you the driving in the dark will be safer feeling as those lights will be brighter.. 10/4 and good luck

At 26 minutes, you talk about "plumbing solder" 60/40. As you use sn97/cu3...lol what you meant to say is pretty much any solder will do, 60/40 is no longer legal to use for plumbing. For the connection, the best for hand soldering would be what is called "eutectic" not only the lowest temp melt point at 183•C but no plastic state.(either solid or liquid). Sn63/Pd37 means 63% tin and 37% lead. Much better at keeping you connections from becoming cold solder joints.

Hello! I have a 99 Explorer that I bought a repair kit for. My housing for my altenator is like the smaller 95 amp. but I have 2 holes like the bigger 130 amp... I have replaced the voltage regulator and the brushings on one side (one brushing was worn all the way down) but I cannot get the big bolt of the pulley side. I do not have a torque drill and the pulley keeps spinning. I have tried on and off for like 2 hrs. I am a not a mechanic and I do not have man strength 😂 do you have any suggestions on how I can get the bolt off without damaging the pulley? Or is it a way to test it to see if the worn brush was the problem? Thanks!!! Also my kit didn't come with a new slip ring. Can clean the burn marks off? Or do they have to be replaced?
@rebuilderinabox
@rebuilderinabox 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you just need to watch the movie on our site. You can clean the slip ring with sandpaper or scotch brite. Best way to get pulley off is 1/2 inch electric or air impact. (Call somebody or borrow) You could also tighten the rotor in a vise (not really a great idea) and use a I/2 " ratchet and socket. If the bearing is good (feels smooth when you hold the ass'y in your hand and spin) or wasn't noisy on the car, the bearing will be OK for a while and you can leave the nut alone for now.

@rebuilderinabox
@rebuilderinabox 6 жыл бұрын
rebuilderinabox@gmail.com or visit the site rebuilderinabox.com and send messages from there. The small diameter kits beef up amperage about 50 amps. We say 40-50 to be safe. The large diameter kits will increase a little more (50-60 ADC) (from 130ADC) but there are huge factors like : The condition of the battery charge cable & buss fuse. The ground path. The size of the pulley. RPM. Visit our site starteralternatorrebuildkits.com to learn a lot about beefing up your entire system.

For this job I'd of used liquid Flux on the parts with silver bearing solder to withstand the heat better. 60/40 is more designed for electronic parts, I wonder how long it would last for a job like this...??? 60/40 is some pretty soft stuff.
@rebuilderinabox
@rebuilderinabox 6 жыл бұрын
Use whatever you want. We would encourage silver but 60/40 is good enough. Bear in mind engine temp 190F. 2 internal cooling fans. Radiator cooling fan. Vehicle is normally moving for fresh air circulation....Not that we are Motorcraft fans, but FoMoCo made millions with 60/40. Also vids are intended for a successful experience for the working man with common garage tools. Silver should have more expensive equipment to get much hotter for proper melt. If people use silver, they might not get it hot enough and cause problems.

Center nut off the pulley that alt should be secured in a vice ,contact points being the mounting bolt holes. Holding anything in your hand then applying 400-500ft lbs of takeoff torque isn't safe. To remove that stuck pulley hold the pulley with a set of channel lock pliers using rubber as a cushion to avoid damage,tap the center shaft on the end ,keep the alt about two inches above your work surface during this process. It will come off easily. WD40 is ineffective as a rusty or stuck nut penetrant. It is a water displacement and light lubricant. Get aerokroil from kano labs online. You will never use anything else. Two screwdrivers is a not a precise or safe removal method.
@rebuilderinabox
@rebuilderinabox 6 жыл бұрын
If you're too chicken to lightly hold the pulley. The nut will come off just by bumping the impact trigger to the left, then wait for the rotation to stop. Repeat 5-6 times just holding the alternator body steady on a table, and you'll notice the nut starting to unthread. Then repeat 5-6 more times allowing the shaft to come to a complete stop. Jon's method won't work because clutch pulleys are becoming very common. Gotta love all the experts.

We don't intend WD40 as a rust bust here. We want lube so the pulley will slide easily off the shaft. We have done thousands, even motor oil would be a big help here to slide the pulley off.

PLEASE!!! we have been doing this for many , many years professionally. The long service life of thousands upon thousands of alternators in various environments and climates is our teacher. Yes, solder manufacturers recommend rosin core for small electronic components like the inside of a voltage regulator or rectifier. But this part of the movie is about creating a bond between 2 pieces of light weight metal that will be exposed to considerably high centrifugal forces and heat. If you know anything at all about welding, you know etching makes the weld stronger. A little bit of paint after the operation will prevent any future corrosion of the bond.

Serious question, I would use an electrical contact “turbine blade” lock washer between the mounting bolt head and alternator case surface, with aluminum anti seize on the mounting bolt threads. Would applying s film of electrical contact grease between the alternator case and mounting cradle work?

Mike Lauer or just clean it with a Q-tip dipped in lime water, contact cleaner or denatured alcohol. Or all three. But by all means, use flux on electromechanical dual purpose joints in high vibration applications, extreme temperature fluctuations, rosin is great stuff but it has its limitations.

Nonsense. It is pronounced without the "L" in the US, but almost everywhere else in the English-speaking world (starting with Canada) it it pronounce with the "L". Either is correct.

We have 30+ years of experience as professionals with this paint type and similar earlier versions. We recommend this finish, not just for cosmetic reasons, but also to inhibit corrosion and promote ground path so units rebuilt with our kits and system are trouble free for long life expectancy. Yes, to a person that is a novice alternator rebuilder, this may not seem right. But trust the voice of many years of experience.

So many misuses of tools.. 6" 1/4" drive extension as a punch? Screwdrivers as pry bars? A pry bar set would have been appropriate in both occasions.

Cory. please read our mission statement on our site. alternatorstarterrebuildkits.com/about-us/. This series of vids and site is dedicated to, and intended for the blue collar American working man, who is tired of being victimized by the automotive big box stores. He doesn't have a big tool box, and needs to get his truck (or car) fixed reliably, but on a budget. As hi tech electrical rebuilders for the last 40+ years, these are the problems that we see with our industry, and this is what we offer to help : QUALITY PARTS, INSTALLED WITH ONLY BASIC TOOLS. You can't do this with Mitsibishi, most Bosch, most Denso, even certain GM and Ford. But, we HAVE selected certain units that can successfully be rebuilt under the shade tree with our guidance. If you have a puller, or a pry bar...great. Use it (as long as you haven't jerked your shoulder out of joint patting yourself on the back). And most back alley guys should have a pry bar, but we selected an extension because we don't want you to pry on the soft copper/plastic part of the slip ring on the back side of the pry bar.

Lol... Corey you ever heard of a shade tree mechanic? Unless your business is rebuilding alternators for living you will have all the time saving tools. The average Joe is going to have the basic tools and make it work with what he has. Its also called using tricks of the trade.

How many times do I have to tell these guys that almost break their arm patting themsef on the back because they have a bearing puller ??? We have been electrical rebuilders for 40 yrs. This series of movies is dedicated to the average working man with BASIC, most common tools, who needs a financial alternative to the big box syndrome. Harbor freight sells extensions cheap. If you have a puller, go ahead and use it, and make sure you BEAM with proudness and internal pride the whole time you're screwing it down.

Steve, you do realize that he is using the basic tools majority of weekend mechanics have in the tool box. If you're tools are made in China than I would recommend getting a bearing puller for cost of $40 to $60. If that's the case I would recommend and just buy a alternator already rebuilt. My sockets and extensions are snap on or craftsman made in US and lifetime warranty. If they brake I get them replaced.
