Sailrite Actually, I do have a question! With the pieces for the boxing the same lengths as the sides of the seat, when I sewed the 4 boxing pieces together at 3/8ths inch, they were too short to attach perfectly to the seat, so I had to crimp in a few wrinkles on each side of the seat to get it to meet at the corners. Should I have cut each boxing piece 6/8ths of an inch longer than the seat piece?

nicole .dominix If the boxing is the same length as the plates (top and bottom) and a 3/8" seam was performed to join the boxing together it (boxing sides) will be slightly shorter than the plates. However, when the boxing is sewn to the plate using a 3/8" seam that should shorten the plate size to equal the length of the boxing on each side. So, no the boxing should not need to be longer.

What would this type of seam look like with cording also included? I am remaking cushions for a rocking chair, and don't want a zip closing. Top stitching the edges seemed like the best solution, but my customer really wanted a contrast cording on the top edge.

it's kind of an either/or situation. Either cording or this top stitching. If the customer wants contracting cording, you're kind of committed to welting. I would always do a zip closing, it's too limiting not to offer a zipper in case the foam compresses over time. I'm still adding a zipper even with this type of cushion, especially because I'm using foam and don't want to have to wrestle to sew the last section closed.

Well, if you have a walking foot sewing machine, that is what we recommend, but if not just use a standard presser foot with a standard feed dog.

I'm not sure I understand the measurements. Need a clearer diagram and explanation. I have a 22" x 22" x 4" foam cushion. Should the top and bottom plate be 22 3/4" x 22 3/4" or should they be 23 1/2" x 23 1/2"?? And what about the boxing? is that 1" and 3/4" on all sides?? or and it to total length and height?? a diagram or picture would really help.

Thanks for the video. I made the foam version last night, but I can't, for the life of me, close up the seam after inserting the foam. Even with pins (and at one point, vice clamps), I can't get it squished down enough to get it into my machine. Save hand-sewing, any other suggestions? TIA

Tammy, 3/8" (what we used in the video) or a 1/2" seam allowance will not make much difference in the finished results of the cushion cover. It will be slightly tighter, but should still work great even if you cut the plates and boxing as directed in the video.
