You can add a "Temporary Construction Thermostat" in series with the wires to make it a preset manual thermostat. They are available for heat limit as well as cool limit. I use them to keep HVAC use to a practical level when having construction or remodeling done. Another option would be the Honeywell CT87N1001 (the old-style round thermostat)

OMG so this resurrected a distant memory. So a grandma of a friend of mine from back in grade school kinda did something like this for her AC, but with a spring-wound timer. I thought back then it was just the weirdest thing. I speculate now, she probably just wanted to manually control how long/often her AC ran (watching her energy consumption, fixed income retired etc). I could maybe see this on an evap cooler but hers was just a regular central split system, but (even back then) really old (and loud).

I think this would work for emergencies purposes if your thermostat goes bad an you live like far away from the first HVAC parts store.
@WordofAdviceTV8 ай бұрын
For short term use, a switch would work great! 😄 No need to cut a hole in the wall either, could just let it hang until you get a new thermostat. It's not practical to leave it this way though because the furnace or A/C would not automatically turn off.

I hope you installed a simple dial or other basic mechanical thermostat for her. Rotate right for warmer, left for colder. My brother and I talked over installing a Nest thermostat for our parents, but realized they preferred the simplicity instead of the potential programmability with automatic setback and occupancy detection.
@WordofAdviceTV8 ай бұрын
Yes, don't worry. I would not install something like this in anyone's house. In most cases explaining how the thermostat works and how to operate it is actually enough and people change their mind about replacing the thermostat to a different one.

Question wouldn’t this type of setup be running without stopping? Because with a thermostat, it would reach a set temperature and shut down. So I guess when the person feels that it’s comfortable they can shut it off themselves? Oh I love your videos by the way.
@WordofAdviceTV8 ай бұрын
Yes, this is not a practical set up because of the reason you pointed out. This video is more for educational purposes than anything else. A thermostat is a switch at its core but it also has temperature control added to it. Without the temp controls, the furnace or AC would run non-stop. Glad to hear you love the videos, thank you!

Off topic but, I have an issues where my inducer motor hums, does not kick on and got very hot. I took it in thinking the motor was shot but the repair shop connected power to it and it ran great. Is this an issue with the board?
@WordofAdviceTV8 ай бұрын
I would check power and see how much voltage it is getting. It is likely to be either a loose wire connection or yes, a bad control board (possibly a bad transformer too).

Oh Jay, PLEASE , PLEASE, PLEASE take this video down before someone does something stupid like hook up Grandmas furnace to this switch and they find her dead the following week from dehydration. @WordofAdviceTV8 ай бұрын
Brother I appreciate your concern but I honestly don't believe this video is that dangerous. I don't advise doing this conversion in the video and the comment section with comments like yours will further discourage folks from attempting this. I think this is a fun little educational video on how a thermostat works at its core and it didn't even cross my mind that it's dangerous until I started getting comments like this. Any video involving repairing 120v or 240v units is much much more dangerous. Especially if it involves testing the unit with the power on. Ironically I don't get any danger warning comments on those though.

@Mo4Honesty8 ай бұрын
That's exactly how almost every standard car a/c worked until very recent times. The temp control was only available on super luxury packages.
@scpatl4now8 ай бұрын
Ok, but how do you select between A/c and the furnace?
@WordofAdviceTV8 ай бұрын
You would need 2 switches to do that or maybe a 3 way switch. With one switch you will need to choose either furnace or A/C. I want to do a little follow up video to this later and install a triple switch box, so there's separate switches for the furnace, air conditioner, and indoor fan.
@jamesroscoe75558 ай бұрын
@@WordofAdviceTVIf you want to be able to switch heat, AC, or off on one switch, you'd need an spdt. Not sure a residential spdt is readily available, but this is low voltage wiring and easy to rig one up on a blank cover plate where this is low voltage wiring.
@WordofAdviceTV8 ай бұрын
@jamesroscoe7555 Thank you for the suggestion! A spdt would work great! I did this in the most simple way possible but as I was looking at the different switches in Home Depot I realized that there are many many cool different ways to wire up a thermostat to a switch. 😄 One could get pretty creative with this.

This is both a bad idea, and bad execution bro... You absolutely lose all thermostatic control! Temp highs and lows matter greatly! There is an illuminated, non-programable, auto-switching thermostat that I suggest. Honeywell Home RTH5160D1003

Lol, don't worry brother this was only for educational purposes. I would not do this in someone's house.
