We went all out on this build & the materials we used are in the description for those that are up for the challenge 💪 But if you’re looking for a way to scale this idea down a bit, consider using a raised bed kit ( low.es/2WuB5ut ) or building your raised beds out of lumber: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnTCiJRthNuof8k

Actually, if you look into the history of well manicured gardens (1500's-1600's) it was the Italians who initially started this style of garden that today they get no credit for. The French was in to copy the style and make it popular and then the English. The only reason Americans believe this style is English is because of our association up to the civil war. However, historically the Italians are the creators of this style of garden.

FYI: this is a *French Garden* style. English Gardens embrace their natural landscape and environment; French Gardens attempt to control the landscape, usually in a geometric layout. 🌲🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳🌳🌳🌺

Yes so true....some what. I’m not an expert but in all my travels to Europe, I think the average English person’s home totally has the natural English garden. I loved all the wild flowers, natural growth of vegetation. The French and Italian average home gardens were much more structured. But when I went to more formal English homes/castles, they were always structured. I love the Italian and casual English gardens. Like everyone had some form of living thing in their yard/home.

I was going to say the same thing. I have an English-type garden in front of my house and it's a more messy and natural style than the severe lines of this one.

Weird how they did such a nice job on the garden but didn't even realize it was French style rather than English.

@@nalaqueenofthejungle English homes/castles, or basically the rich people usually want the best at the time, thus many English homes/castles imported French and Italian elements, some even hired French or Italian designers. Some Italian/French/English castles are so big, they have their own themed gardens, some have all types of garden in one castle. So it's not entirely restricted to one style, but what style the owner wants to adopt.

An English garden that needs a lot of sun! We get 2 days of sunshine and call it summer. This is a nice design, and I would happily use it as a kitchen garden or a rose garden. In my own garden I have retaining walls made from old, very thick broken paving slabs. I laid them dry, so plants can grow through gaps. To prevent soil leakage I used weed suppressant fabric on the inside. An alternative approach in the first year or two would be to infill perennial plants with annuals until the main plants have grown. This gives the garden a more finished look, and the plants act as living mulch.

Um classically inspired symmetrical courtyards like this are indicative of traditional French gardens, like those seen at Versailles or any Château along the Loire. Their structured compisitions cry order. English gardens are almost always asymetrical in nature, thier layered and contrasting compisitions cry chaos. The floral arrangement is somewhat English but is totally at odds with the hard landscaping. And yes, the fence is an odd touch, a hedge row would have been a much more suitable choice to give the feeling of seclusion and intimacy of an English garden.

The simplicity is in a way very Zen. Its so organized. It looked like a lot of work though... So first world! But I wonder if the carpenters in Asia can just copy this with their bare hands... or at least shovels and big knifes. The Landscape Fabric Now that would an essential and cheaper alternative to those blocks? Its be less English, if it was wood? But it may still be as charming. Picket Fences would so exotic in my side of the world. Anything the video is Subscription worthy. Excellent.

A more accurate title would have been: " How to Create a Formal Garden". English gardens come in many forms such as cottage gardens with perennials beds and roses or naturalistic gardens with vast lawns, trees in natural copses, ponds and neoclassical arcitecture, urns, arbors, etc.

I'm not sure how 811 utility finder works in all places, but be aware that in some areas they only locate utilities to your property line from the street. They may not come onto your property which is where you need the information if you are building a project! I live in Kennewick, WA and the utilities companies would only mark the utilities up to my property line. My project was inside my property quite a ways as my house is at the back of a one acre lot! So 811 was basically useless for me! They told me that I would have to hire a private company to come and locate within my property line!! I was on a tight budget and couldn't afford the private company fees so I ended up just winging it and just digging VERY, VERY carefully!

You could reduce costs, but still have a similar look, by not using raised beds, and by using cheaper fencing. Picket fences are not common here in England. The raised beds are nice, but many gardens here would just use some type of edging to stop the gravel mixing with the soil, and then define the edges with creeping plants.

This is exactly what is NOT an English garden design. This design is based on Medieval and 17th century French gardens, which were in turn influenced by Islamic and Roman style gardens. The 'English Garden' developed a bit later, and is more of a reaction against previous design principles. It defies strict symmetry and straight lines and instead embraces a more natural aesthetic. This is possibly the most basic lesson in landscape design history.

I would have used a shorter picket fence instead of a 4-footer, so the garden would look more "friendly." It would be nice to know what the total cost was to create that "English Garden" look - the excavator, renting the tools, all the plants, all the top soil, compost, potting soil, concrete blocks, adhesive, base and gravel, plus the fence. And if one person was doing all the work, how long would it take - realistically. Come on, Lowes. It's beautiful, but how practical is it for most of us, really?
