built my unit today and i went through a few stams before i got it right as they broke but i did find the Ordning to be more sturdy. I guess i wasnt 100% confident with then handle on the Stam staying on the tilt section even though i used a bit of super glue so i used an Ordning with a corner bracket screwed to the top and then attached to the GoPro keeping to the design in your video. I had to change sides when attaching to the GoPro as on the new GoPro Hero 3 it has the wifi button on

Sorry the video production line is not faster here, I do have a GoLapse update coming which will hopefully make the pan tilt rig work better. As far a level, I just eye ball it, If you check my playlist you will see I miss level occasionally. You can buy a little bubble level at the hardware store and stick it to your rig, I have thought about doing that but never remember to do it.

Sorry Dave, my mistake. The bottom timer was a one off project, there is no source for that piece it came from a clamp, the top Ikea timer will work in that spot .... see panning unit DIY part 3. I am still currently looking for a smaller way to put the 1/4 20 on the top of the timer.
@twinvisionphoto
@twinvisionphoto 11 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your help i did a bit of searching around and found a thread conversion table which told me that a 1/4 20 is the same as a M6 0.75 or M6 1.00 in Metric terms. Lastly i would like to ask what the black plastic attachment is on your timer rig it looks like its off a tripod mount or something it on the pan timer you have on this video and allows the attachment of the Corner bracket. once again great video thank you for your help
@Getawaymoments
@Getawaymoments 11 жыл бұрын
You need to visit a good hardware store, 1/4 20 in the standard screw size for most cameras. I don't know of an exact metric equivalent. My set of tap cutters came in both metric and "English" or "Stubborn American". Keep looking around and ask for help they are out there. The tap cutter allows you to cut a threaded hole into the material you want to put a threaded bolt into.

I know everyone likes the Ordning, but I prefer the Stam cause its cheap. The Ordning top will sometimes bind up if the camera is not centered. I avoid this by not having a top. Good luck on your build!

Thanks for your input. That worked! Now I'm running into a seperate issue with the egg timer that is handing the vertical rotations (the one on top). For most of the rotation it works out fine, but there are certain angles when the gopro with the bracket becomes to heavy and stops the timer from rotating. Did this happen to you and if so did you just try to lessen the weight? Do you have recommendations for a sturdier egg timer?

i have ordered several STAM and also ORDNING so i guess the STAM would be better to us for pan and tilt in this instance by drilling through the handle. i tried to post a reply before but it didnt register :( look forward to your new desig n i hope i can use some of the timers i have purchased for your new top end :) once again thank you

There is no source for the black thing, which is a knob off a broken ultraclamp. But, the design of the top timer will work for the bottom, or any plastic or even wooden dowel to mount a 1/4 20 screw to the top of the timer.

i am attempting to make this unit tomorrow i have just ordered several ORDNING and several STAM timers from Ikea so i guess the STAM are the ones i should use and drill through the handles? will let you know how i get on. Look forward to your new video is it a lot different from your present design maybe i shouldve held off buying so many timers :( once again thank you

Thanks for the idea. In all of your videos you never show how to attach the bottom corner bracket to the bottom timer or what the black knob that you use is from. You have a 1/4 nut coming up through it to attach to the corner bracket but how did you attach the black knob to the timer spindle?

In time-lapse, more frames are better, so shoot 1 or 2 frames per second when using panning time-lapse units. Fewer frames will make it choppy.

No worries - I have a question: I plan on getting a Joby Gorilla Pod for my GoPro and using your tutorials to make a couple of these rigs. When doing just a 1-timer horizontal pan, how do you ensure your GoPro is level (if you're not using a tri-pod with a built in level, that is)? Joby sells a leveling attachment for $39, but I would rather see some alternatives/explore if I even need a level or not. Is it fairly easy to see whether your GoPro's shot will be level? Thanks in advance, cheers

I love this idea for the short term time lapse. However if one is wanting to speed up something that takes longer than an hour (e.g., a flowering plant), The "thousands of dollars" rig really can show it's strength. That being said, it is a fine setup and I too think you should try to market a version of this. Those "thousand dollar" rigs had to start somewhere. Good luck.

cool idea! those egg timers must go on for quite a while before stopping though... my egg timer thing only goes for 1hr. another problem I've had with timelapses is that the camera runs out of battery. is there a way of replacing the battery with a charged one halfway through?
@Getawaymoments
@Getawaymoments 10 жыл бұрын
I mainly shoot with one hour timers, If you charge your GoPro before your time-lapse it should last for an hour to an hour and a half. You can add the extra battery pack for longer camera life, but I find that I never need it. Are you shooting stills or video? Stills is the better way to shoot time-lapses.
