I know this was at the height of the pandemic, but whenever you’re working with firewood, do you normally test with a moisture meter before starting your projects or partway through to verify that the wood is actually dry? The reason I ask is because I have made a few projects like mallets out of Osage Orange it is extremely dense, and I started with green logs. I made a few rough boards as well and they have been sitting for the last two years

with fire wood if it has been drying out side for a year or two it should be fine to bring in. I then let it acclimate to the shop for a week or two.

I forgot about that cool little hammer. The cylinder mallet. I asked you about it before I tried to make it and I screwed it up. Looking at the mallet now. I'm thinking go to a valley village and find an old wooden rolling pin. That would work that would definitely work. Well thank you for that epiphany.

I'm curious to know if it is possible to break down a piece of firewood into lumber without a vice? Are you able to do this with other work holding methods (dogs, holdfasts, etc)?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 4 жыл бұрын
Sure. I have a video showing how to rive it then plane it square. You could do it with just a planing stop. If nothing else mount a clamp and use that.

Why do you set your planes down onto the cutting edge?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright Жыл бұрын
That's the most common way. I did a video comparing putting it on a soul in on its side and putting that side does more damage in general. Unless you're working on a metal bench or a bench with nails or screws in the surface it's best to put the plane down on that soul. It started with a Ole Miss propagated by shop teachers. They scared a lot of people from putting them down on their soul.

One thing you forgot to mention about wood selection for planes, is that apart from beech, a lot of european planes, especially shop made ones (also even new ECE ones) have been made from fruit woods too. Pear and apple seem to be used quite often. So if one is felling a fruit tree I would assume that either of those two would work out fine as well... Pear wood btw is wonderful to work with. I just made a tiny smoother out of it the other day. :)

What Lego man said. You can also use it for the groove side of a tongue and groove joint or to capture panels in a door or basically anywhere else you need to make a groove.

Would red oak make a good plane
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 жыл бұрын
Sure. You have to be careful the grain direction isn't going to cause you problems. You'll hear a lot of naysayers out there saying to not use that and a lot of other woods because there are better woods to choose. But there are always better woods out there. Red oak will make a fine tool that will work for years and years to come

if you make it too short then you could not eject it easily. I broke the handle off as I did not want to use it as a chisel any more. the long handle would get in the way of using the plane.

@@WoodByWright Понял. Мой отец давно делал подобный инструмент с фигурным резцом для украшения кромки облицовочной доски. Там над резцом в теле рубанка было коническое углубление для удаления стружки. Калевка называется.

This doc. baffles us with studies that few people can ever understand.. At the end, he tries to sell us something that he has hinted is free.. He hopes that the info-overload has stunned us enough that we will buy his product, on his say-so since we cannot understand most of what he claims [his references].. He's an expert so we should what he tells us.. Bull.!!
