To make the ti leaves soft:
Leave it in a warm place such inside your dishwasher or under the refrigerator. Another way is to get a bucket of water and put the stems of the leaves in the bucket. Keep that in a warm dark place for no more than a week.
How to keep the haku fresh:
Get damp paper towels and wrap it around your whole haku. Then grap some newspaper and spray water on it to make it damp also then wrap it around. Keep it inside the refrigerator.

You are amazingly talented!! I really loved the part where you talk about the good mana while making it, I hadn't thought about how important it is! Also, where I live it's not easy to get fresh material to make these, so is it possible to use the same technique to make one out of artificial leaves? Thank you very much!
@aili2943
@aili2943 5 жыл бұрын
I have never tried it, but I'm sure it's possible! Instead of using ti leaves as the base for braiding, you could use raffia to keep the artificial leaves from falling :)

I love your video! I live in the Mainland any suggestion on a good substitute if I cant get the Ti leaves? Thank you😀
@KinseyOfficial
@KinseyOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
I used to live in Hawaii so I had this struggle when I moved to the Mainland. You can actually find ti leaves at flower markets, like if you go to a wholesale flower place; they usually sell them in bundles of 8, 10, 15, 20, etc.. If you still can't find ti leaves, you can try banana leaves. If you really can't find anything, you can use raffia or string for the braiding part, and any pointy-looking leaves for the rest.

So beautiful! Such a helpful video. I’m trying to make one for my future husband. However, I live on the mainland, so I’m not sure I have access to ti leaves. I was going to use silk ti leaves. How many leaves do you think are needed for a 6ft open-ended (maile?) style?
@aili2943
@aili2943 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! A maile style lei may need around lets say 25-35 depending on how much you want to stick the silk ti leaf out of the lei. If the leaves look small, then you would definitely need more. I'm not accurately sure about the number but it's my estimate 🤗 sorry for the late reply!

How do you add flowers ?
@aili2943
@aili2943 5 жыл бұрын
I would just place the flowers just like the way I placed the ti leaves inside the braid. If you think the flowers will fall off, I reccomend using raffia as the base so that it'll be tighter. :)

Can you use raffia to braid the pieces instead?
@aili2943
@aili2943 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can! I reccomend using a lot of strands of raffia so that the leaves that's being braided inside will stay tight and secured.

how do you tie it behind someone’s head can u please explain that part me to?
@aili2943
@aili2943 6 жыл бұрын
You wanna end your haku with a braid long enough to tie it twice behind your head. If it's loose, then you would have to take off some leaves on the end that you finished so that you can tie it tighter. Iyanah Marie Villon
