I am so glad to have found your channel! Although I wish I had found it sooner. I'm really looking forward to learning how to get all of that clay out of your plaster mold. I tried to make a latex mask for my son (he wanted to be Sloth from the movie Goonies) and it turned out okay, not as perfect as I had hoped, but I really struggled getting the clay out of the mold. I had followed another KZbinrs advise and used wood glue as a barrier between the clay and the plaster and it really did not work well for me at all, I will use the gloss Kryolan paint from now on. Can't wait for the next video :)

great video ed! question-- why does some of my latex not cure in the mold? just little spots here and there. could it be the sealer that i use on the sculpture that gets absorbed into the plaster mold? i used glossy rustoleum sealant. i will for sure use krylon next time. Thanks again for your videos.
@eviledwin777
@eviledwin777 8 жыл бұрын
It could have stuck to the mold and is not allowing the latex to absorb. Or it could be a contaminant. Be sure and let the Krylon dry over night.

I have a quick query though--first time sculpt/mold; I let my clay dry and harden first, and I want to put plaster on the sculpture, but I'm wondering if I'll be able to remove the dry clay from the mold...should I just cut my losses, start over, and apply plaster while the clay is still damp and flexible?

@@eviledwin777 Will the sculpture come off of the armature easily without the molding process? I want to focus on sculpting monsters first. Then learn about molding.
@DistortionsUnlimited
@DistortionsUnlimited 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Well if you make sure not to let the clay dry too much than yes it will come off fairly easily and you can reuse it for a future sculpt to keep work on things. Have you watch our latest Monster Lab on WED clay? Ed goes over covering the sculpture and the quality of WED clay in that one in depth. But of course you can use oil clay also and that will not dry out.

This video series is fantastic: you have such an engaging way of demonstrating everything! I have one query about spraying the clay: I guess the clay's still wet when you spray it with Krylon as that's the only way I can think of to get it out of the mould afterwards... But is the clay then reusable? Can you clean off the spraypaint and reconstitute it, or do you have to buy a whole new batch of WED every time? I also have no idea how you get the clay out of those antennae, but that's a question for another day ^_^

@DistortionsUnlimited
@DistortionsUnlimited 3 ай бұрын
The clay will still be soft enough to remove from the sculpture if you don't wait too long after the plaster has set up. Once you spray the clay before molding that will act as a mold release to help remove the clay as well.
