If you need to use sandpaper on curved surfaces you can put gaffer tape (duct tape) on the back of the sand paper, before cutting it into strips, and it means you end up with something a bit like sanding belts but really soft and flexable and it won't rip as when you're using it. It's a tip I picked up from Alec Steele and Will 👍

We, as a community, need a screwdriver that is the perfect fit for the chip-breaker to plane-iron screw. That is the size he needs to make. I'd bet he'd sell several gross of that size, in no time. He would likely find he'd have trouble keeping them in stock, once the word started getting out. A set of screw drivers for the common hand-plane screws would be nice too. The one previously mentioned, the tote and knob, the frog screws, you know what I mean. Drivers that fit the screws correctly. Fit the slot square, not tapered asking to cam out.

I just can't find a screwdriver big enough for the chipbreaker screw, and I hate using the cap iron as a screw driver. Thanks for all you do for your viewers, James. Good video, well timed as I have recently dug up a hammer here on the homestead that needs new handles. It has the steel that runs all the way through the length of the handle, wasn’t sure how to do it, I think I will try your method. Keep up the good work.

It was such a minor point, but your commentary on "cutting a curved profile with a straight saw" was a big light-bulb moment for me. I don't have plans to build a screwdriver handle in the near future, but there is little doubt that I will be cutting some curved profiles... and this technique seems very useful. Hi! I'm new to wood carvings and after several band aids I finally turned to youtube for help. To replace my sad pocket knife I bought some chisels you suggested in another video but I come asking for carving tips. Specifically, carvings round objects. I want to carve dowls into wands without further mangling my fingers. Do you have any past videos I can turn to?

I've done a few ones but I don't think I have any that I've whittled. Usually when you're working with a round stock a carving knife is what you want and not chisels. Chisels are good for flat surface and relief carving. And when carving with a knife it's important to have a protective glove but also to make sure the knife is incredibly sharp. The dull knife will cut you far more often than a sharp knife. Because you have to put more pressure into it. Is "Live Oak" a different species than White Oak, or is it just describing "particularly twisty grained sections" of it?

It is very different from White oak however it is in the White oak family. White oak is a large classification of many different types of oak however there is a specific white oak in the White oak family which gets very confusing very quickly lol.

When I was spending 20 years in coastal South Carolina, I saw a lot of Live Oak. It grows differently than other oaks, as it has a broad spreading habit. It has one characteristic that was highly sought after in the days of wooden ships. The "knees" of a tree - where the trunk and major roots merge - were highly sought after. They were practically ready-made very strong corbels to support the gun decks of wooden warships.

I am wondering why you always use the file or rasp lifting the handle. This way you only use a very small part of the file surface and the dust stick to the file. If you lower the handle while filing, you use much more of the file and at the same time you get rid of the dust between the teeth. It feels a little awkward in the beginning, but after rehearsal your filing results get much better.

That is a skill that I have yet to learn. I have been working at train to do that more often. But it takes a bit more work so you don't push into the work. But it is a generally better method.
