a simple trick when turning for a pattern (your handle): Take half the design and make a negative of it. Cut it out of something harder than paper (cardboard, luon, etc). You can now hold that against the turning while it's running to quickly gauge where you need to continue the cut :D

If you do it again you could heat up the copper ring and let the expansion cause it to fit, and then when it cooled it would vert firmly hold the wood - like cart wheels are done.

Bill, you have a drill-press. You should never drill toward your hands or yourself under any circumstances. You would have kept your hands out of harms way while having a cleaner hole at the same time.

This was so cool. I'm going to have to try this. I started making HP wands out of branches that fell from my tree to give the wands a random whimsical feel, but I've never made any handles that I've liked. I think I'm going to try this for my handles.

I made wands for me and my wife using only a belt sander. It was a really fun project. I ended up breaking the handle on mine so I had to peg 2 halves together. Really excellent videos and builds both of you.

Not sure if this has been said yet but the wood with claro on it is claro walnut. A very nice species of walnut that is sought after in certain instruments and is also loved by furniture makers. It's lighter in colour than black walnut and also tends to have more interesting grain. It can also be pretty expensive in certain parts of the world. So that's a really nice piece.

So, this is an excellent example of even doing things the wrong way can get you the desired results. Some tips for anyone planning on trying this, first watch a couple videos on basic lathe work specifically cutting guides. Here, he was using his gouges as scrapers, which does work, but dulls them super fast (sharpest tool he used was the lil tiny gouge to do the grip grooves) and leaves an ugly cut. Next stop is finish town, CA glue makes a really nice finish, but see how he was splashing it all over the place? little drops being flung at real high speed just.. everywhere? To help prevent that, use thin glue and apply it to a paper towel first, then to the wood. That should also leave a finish smooth enough you won't need to sand. note that when I said wrong way, its a matter of opinion. He'd have had a much nicer time with this project had he used his gouges correct, but he wouldn't have gotten a different end result. Sandpaper and finish solve wood working boo boos like grinders and paint do to welding.

A nice trick I learned to get a nice glass type finish on wood turning is to lightly dampen the wood and sand. Something about the water expanding the outer fibers. It words great.

it makes the bent fibers stand up again, so you can sand them off. also water works great against bruises

This is the "Wand of Adhesion" Superglue now has two settings, "a little dab'l do ya", or "A tonna glue will do everything" Good stuff :)

With no residue or cleanup, perfect seams every time. That would absolutely be magic :)

When you have metal parts that are close to fitting, like the copper pipe rings, use heat to temporarily expand or cold to temporarily shrink the parts. A torch and dry ice are the best, but a lighter/stove/oven or 10-20 minutes in the freezer respectively will work in most cases. When the parts return to room temperature, they're have a grip so strong, you'd think it was epoxy.

Small advice. If you turn wood and you want a specific shape. Create an inverted template so that you can hold it at the wood while you're turning the wood. It's more precise. And I would have oiled the handle before sealing it ^^

another great way to seal your handle instead of Super glue is to mix 5 minute epoxy and add rubbing alcohol to thin it down (about 2:1) it lets the epoxy get deep into the pores. we used to use this to seal cork on fishing rods to make them last longer it's great for knife handles and it's sandable and is water proof

Holding that piece while drilling out the interior... Dangerous. Any time you are dealing with rotary force on a small object use a clamp.

Holding the drill is fine but the part being drilled needs to be secured in clamp or vice to an object with mass to prevent injury from either the bit itself or the object being drilled becoming an extension of the drill.

Note the following is all in fun. For love of!!!! You really are a bloody Muggle, even the most amateur Wand maker knows a core must be something with a ounce of magic and brother that foam has less magic in it than my backside. Joking, joking not a attack or anything but seriously Foam as a core unless that stuff had been recovered from a pile of unicorn poo it would have zero potential. A feather, a hair or a tooth even a human tooth (No wand I make will have a core of teeth unless it's a personal deal) that would of felt more alive. Yes I am talking about pieces of wood made into props and not actually magic, this is what I plan to use to get my skills up to snuff turning and carving. But I like to go with the lore (To a degree I mean Miss Rowling has never said any king of magic being exists where you would find say the Grafton, Flatwoods, Momo and the brother but also the opposite of the main type of Phoenix the Aqualis, but I am using the lore of her works to make my wands akin to those of that world but still just props in our world) from Pottermore for inspiration, I am a big fan of the books and all. Again I know you were just having fun heck one wand I plan to make it's core is of a Quintaped fang, The fang is either going to be Resin heavily weathered to look like Ivory (Yeah my wands will have parts only I know are there since breaking a wand kills it unless you have the Elder Wand to repair it.) or recycled white medicine bottle caps done the same way. So please don't think I'm up set or hate this just wanted to have fun too.
