Mike, terrific video. My 45 year old son wanted me to make a Harry Potter wand. This video was just what I needed. He is a 6'3" 230lb 1st Infantry, 1st Armored, and 101st Airborne Division, and Civilian Intel Agency veteran serving in Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan but is a kid at heart...I hope he always maintains his wonder.

Wand making has All the lathe techniques you need.Its the most versatile learning exercise. If your wand is good,other jobs come out good.

MIke, a tip I learned for handling a chuck with the two bars - lock the headstock and you can tighten the chuck with one bar while holding the work with the other hand. I find this to be a really easy way to use that style of chuck.

Hey Mike, Your little finishing turntable looks awesome, did you make that yourself? I always end up scrounging cardboard boxes and jabbing screwdrivers through to hold up small pieces like that, and making a complete mess.

Is it somehow against the rules to just take a saw and cut off the part from the leftover in the jaws? Seems slightly dangerous cutting off something spinning around that fast. P.S. Thanks for mentioning the speed you are working at. Too many videos on turning dont talk about that at all. I am trying to learn things by watching and I still have no real idea how fast different woods should be spun, or if its a matter of thickness or length, or total mass... When the world opens for business again (Its June 2020) I hope to take a class or 3.

You have to do what feels comfortable and safe. With more experience comes more confidence in doing things that may not be dangerous but used to be scary because of our skill level at the time. Stay safe. I do occasionally use a saw.
