Little tip from a quilter: cut with the rotary blade from the bottom to the top. That way you get a straight cut. Handling the blade is also easier this way. And never use it on paper. 🙂
@lindaanderson9840

Yes please always cut away from you! It is ok to use a rotary cutter for paper just have 2. One for fabric and one for paper. Use your new blade for fabric then when it starts to get dull use it for paper. 😊

Are you ever amazed when we find your older videos? I just watched the one from Dec 7 and loved the idea of collage on the junk mail envelopes. But what really go my creative juices going was the "bird nests" . I have oodles of thread on wooden spools, no less, which I have been whittling down since I inherited them. Now I am going to make "bird nests" and save the spools to make ink stamps with nuts and washers...Thank you for getting me out of my hoarding mode.

An answer to prayer you are, Pam! I found a book to use as a cover, gutted it then realized the 8½x11 pages were too small! Yes, I'm learning as I go! Scrounged around for options - 12x12s, rolled gift wrap, packing paper, even blueprint paper. But This is the cat's pajamas!! 👍 Thank you!!

Great paper making idea, i just have to try this. I might take some magazine pages and build on them. Or neutral pattern gift wrap. Oh Pam, I watched in horror while yo rotary cut that place mat! Just a hint, stand up and “ALWAYS” cut away from you. Apply even pressure and slowly cut. When I taught quilting classes the first lesson was always on the safe use of you tools! Sorry the instructor part of me just activated...😊

Our Maltese-poodles could smell the frozen Butterball turkey coming up the basement stairs from the pantry area. Didn’t matter that it was wrapped in plastic and netting, and hard as a rock, they knew what it was and knew that bits of roast turkey were in their future. They didn’t care for the sausage stuffing or gravy, but carrots, peas cauliflower, broccoli and sweet potatoes were also wolfed down.

I just love the placemat colorsceem . I think if it is not too thick, I would maby laminate it, and use the journal to notes for the garden planning. Then you can toutch it and lay it on the ground, and reading your notes while planting not worrying about it getting dirthy. Just a thought. But plain it would make a pretty journal for poems or diarry 🤲🏼🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕 Thank you so much for sharring 🌸🙏🏼🌸

It’s so funny you chose this project to work on. I’m making journals out of Readers Digest books and I wanted to use some of the original pages. But I wanted the pages to be oriented where the print was left to right, but when I folded it I didn’t get enough of the page so I just glued 2 pieces of book page together side to side and it made the perfect size for my journals. I even went so far as to glue 3 pieces together and that way I had a page to fold into pockets.

In quilting a term for a similar technique is called “crumb quilting”. You sew very small scraps together on top of a larger piece of fabric like a cut up old sheet to make a larger piece of fabric. It can be tedious, but fun at the same time 😊

Your junk journals pages always look awesome compared to my random put together pages! This project reminded me of when my daughter was in 4H and we used a placemat for a project. We took a placemat and sewed several ziplock bags inside it with grosgrain ribbon going down the center with a seam holding the bags inside. It would make a great ephemera holder! Thanks for chatting away while I do my journals! 😉

It's really nice Pam!! I would turn the table mat the other side to make it fit with my signatures and we wouldn't have to cut the mat or make tall pages!

Pam, you are a constant source of inspiration. I am always amazed and delighted by your creativity! I found that folding the short sides together gave me a wider journal and it was a little less challenging (but perhaps less fun, too) to make signatures to fit it. Sitting here, happily creating with reckless abandon!

How cool! I've already used place mats for covers, neat! Anyway, looks like you might need a new blade for the cutter and there are silicone "dots" to put on the bottom of the plastic rulers so they don't slip. Makes cutting so mush easier.

What a great piece! 👍 I have used place mats as, book cover wrapping before! 😉 Mats are often thicker than normal pieces of fabric, but they make for a squoosh-y soft cover, which I love! I have to make some of these, they would be amazing travel journals! Hello Sunny Buns 💙 thanks Pam - love from Denmark 🌸💕🌱

Hi Pam, I ran into your page & started watching your interesting Junk Journal Making. I noticed you switched out your exacto knife for a new one. I'm not sure if anyone shared this with you, but if you look at yr exacto knife, you'll see the blade has small lines on it. They are mini individual blades. As the top one gets old & dull, you can get a pair of pliers & carefully bend & snap that dull blade off by bending it away from you. ((Or ask your husband for his strength lol)) My suggestion. Nvr take the bottom w the black side apart. Truth is, you may nvr get it back together the way it was lol. You have a lot of great fun ideas!! Happy Crafting! Q. 😎👍
